#822 - Duke sets up Prime non-conference matchups in historic deal

We're not done with the news! We're back very quickly to discuss more of the Duke Basketball news coming out over the past few days on Episode 822! If Episode 821 was the recruiting episode, 822 is the news episode and we start with the news that Duke has created a deal with Amazon Prime to have three showcase non-conference games air on the streaming platform in a multiyear deal. The games in 2026-27: UConn, Michigan, and Gonzaga. We discuss the historic deal and how Duke is setting itself up to once again have a terrific non-conference schedule. We also discuss Cooper Flagg holding off his former roommate Kon Knueppel to win the NBA's Rookie of the Year. It was a banner year for both, so we sing their praises. Jon Scheyer's recruiting is truly off the charts incredible. In his latest master stroke, the Duke coach has convinced Spanish superstar Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje to come to Duke a year earlier than expected to join the 2026-27 Blue Devils. Boom Boom, as he is known, is considered perhaps the top prospect in the 2028 NBA Draft and Duke will get to see what he brings to the table starting this fall. We’re back with Episode 820 where we get to know what we’re getting in new transfer John Blackwell from one of the coaches that knows him the most. We welcome his high school coach, Rick Palmer, to the show! Rick Palmer has known John since late in his freshman year of high school, and with Jason not available, Donald gets to catch up with his high school teammate about the player that will be one of the focal points for Duke next season. We get into John Blackwell’s game and discuss what kind of player Duke is getting. Caleb Foster returns! The Duke point guard has announced that he will return for his senior season, and we hop on very quickly on DBR Bites #163 to discuss it! Pressure? What pressure? Competition? Foster’s announcement just a few minutes before Donald and Jason hopped on to talk about it is telling us that he’s ready to embrace all of it and help lead this team in whatever role he may have. The Duke Blue Devils have reeled in what may be the most significant transfer in the program's history. John Blackwell, who was widely seen as the best scoring guard in the transfer portal has committed to Jon Scheyer, locking in a crucial piece of Duke's 26-27 team. Duke Basketball Roundup co-hosts Jason Evans and Donald Wine have a complete breakdown of his game and what his presence in Durham will mean for Duke. Pat’s return will have some expectations attached to it as he seeks to be one of the best centers in the country next season. Jason and Donald are excited about the possibilities as they discuss some of what might have led to his decision to stay in school and not test the NBA Draft waters. We also give our takes on what we can see from an improved Pat next season as he becomes one of the main centerpieces on offense and defense. We also dive quickly into some of the portal possibilities remaining for Duke as John Blackwell visits campus and we discuss a couple of the other forwards that Duke is considering. I thought I enjoyed Scott Rich as a new participant. But now you can toss him. I hope Jason comes back at him for his defense of Nik. Scott has no comprehension of the animus toward UConn in the fan base. He is oblivious to the history—of talks as if he is. He may have high IQ but he is in the bottom 5% on EQ! Just an idiot! He can take his advice about this is the way it will be in the NIL era and we should wish Nik well and sell it on another podcast. We don’t need him or Nik anymore—unless Scott repents of his idiocy.
