    An estimated 6.2 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimers dementia in 2021, which breaks down to 1 in 9 people age 65 and older, and those numbers will increase substantially over the next few years as the population ages. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to die. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affects a person's ability to function independently. On this episode of Free Thinking, Montel talks with an emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr Peter Rabins. Dr Rabins was the founding director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and the first holder of the Richman Family Chair in Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders. He has published more than 300 articles and book chapters and is an author or co-author of 8 books including The 36-Hour Day, Practical Dementia Care, The Why of Things, and Getting Old without Getting Anxious.

    Caroleen's debut feature documentary, We Love Paleo (aka Love Paleo, 2016), is also distributed worldwide. We Love Paleo was subtitled in French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Czech. To date, her debut feature has been seen in over 60 countries. This creative of Haitian descent holds a Bachelor of Communications from UQAM University, constantly seeks to enhance the mastery of her craft and speaks a few languages.

Her efforts have given her the opportunity to work with physicians, patients, and foundations across the Globe. After the birth of her son in 2016, she shifted her focus to supporting the children of parents with a chronic illness. Her children’s book entitled “Some Days; A Tale of Love, Ice Cream, and My Mom’s Chronic Illness” was created to normalize differing abilities and amplify how each of us can thrive in spite of the challenges. The movement she has created has changed the apologetic tone and transformed the child and parent’s experiences into uplifting stories that highlight the patient’s resilience.

In short, the veterinary industry is in the midst of a serious mental health crisis. Dr Daly is an emergency small animal veterinarian currently practicing in Castle Rock, Colorado. She earned her undergraduate degree from University of North Dakota and graduated from vet school in 2009 from the University of Minnesota. She has practiced veterinary medicine in Hong Kong, Minnesota, Oregon, and Colorado. She is also a mental health advocate passionate about shedding light on mental health issues within the veterinary industry.
