    61. Deuteronomy isn't just a book...it's a treaty: a Bible study on the form and message of Deuteronomy

    61. Deuteronomy isn't just a book...it's a treaty: a Bible study on the form and message of Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy has one of the most famous lines in all of Scripture that Jesus quotes as part of an answer to the question: "What is the greatest commandment?" The Shema is the core of a Jewish prayer that is one the of the oldest prayers in the world. Deuteronomy 6:4 and following are famous for good reason...but what is the entire book of Deuteronomy about? What was supposed to be a Bible study on Deuteronomy 32 quickly became a discussion about the form and message of the book as a whole. Here it is! (We will get back to Deuteronomy 32 in a future episode!)

    We talk about a number of topics

    The big picture message of Deuteronomy
    Deuteronomy is a Treaty Covenant Document, which is a well attested genre in the ancient Near East
    Is Deuteronomy more like 2nd millennium BCE Hittite treaties or 1st millennium BCE Neo Assyrian treaties?
    What does “love” mean in Deuteronomy and how ancient Near Eastern treaties help us understand this.
    Hebrew language insights from Deuteronomy 32
    The connection between Deuteronomy 32 and Genesis 1
    Wisdom and Deuteronomy
    The relationship between faith and risk
    God as Heavenly Father in Deuteronomy

    0:25-1:41 Initial impression of Deuteronomy
    1:42-7:32 Deuteronomy as Retelling and Reinterpretation
    7:33-9:29 Big Picture Ideas from Deuteronomy
    9:30-17:50 Deuteronomy is a Treaty Covenant Document!
    17:51-24:36 Is Deuteronomy a 2nd or 1st millennium text?
    24:37-29:21 “Love” in Deuteronomy and ancient Near Eastern Treaties
    29:21-35:23 How Deuteronomy 32 fits in the book
    35:24-42:11 Hebrew language insights from Deuteronomy 32
    42:12-46:11 Wisdom and Deuteronomy
    46:12-48:57 Faith and Risk
    48:58-55:55 God as Heavenly Father in Deuteronomy

    60. Psalm 1-2 Bible Study with JC from Bite Size Seminary: the Introduction to the Book of Psalms

    60. Psalm 1-2 Bible Study with JC from Bite Size Seminary: the Introduction to the Book of Psalms

    Introductions matter. They give purpose for the book, orient readers to the trajectory of the work, and show important themes. Unfortunately, many do not realize that Psalm 1 AND 2 together form the introduction to Psalms. This has major implications for how we approach this book.

    JC from Bite Size Seminry joins Matthew in a Bible Study on Psalm 1-2, the introduction to the book of Psalms.

    They cover a number of topics.
    * What is the significance of the introduction of Psalms?
    * What does it mean to meditate on the “law of the Lord?”
    * What does it mean to be “blessed”?
    * What causes the joy and flourishing of the person in Psalm 1?
    * Judgment in Psalm 1
    * Psalm 1 as an invitation
    * Psalm 2 as rejection of the invitation by the kings of the world

    *The theme of the Messiah in Psalm 2
    * A possible explanation for the presence of archaic forms in Psalm 2
    * The mercy of God
