how did i get here?

johnny goudie

”Johnny Goudie is the Marc Maron of Austin music. The veteran singer/guitarist – best known for fronting early Nineties pop band Mr. Rocket Baby and, later, his major-label rock act, Goudie – stepped up to the microphone with a new intention in 2011 and launched the How Did I Get Here? podcast. Now 840-some episodes in, the hourlong, twice-weekly interview show gives the host a platform to really connect with his Austin music guests, not just on what’s happening in their careers, but also in the shared experience of music appreciation – and that’s where he truly shines.” -The Austin Chronicle 2019

From The Vault - Vicki Peterson & Sean Kelly Discuss "White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story" From Ep 1428 (9/20/2024)

Welcome to another episode of How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today, we go back to episode 1428 on September 20, 2024 with Vicki Peterson (Bangles, Continental Drifters) and Sean Kelly discussing Sean's book, White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story about legendary band Continental Drifters. We talk about the Drifter's operatic story, where they are now, the band's connections to Austin, and much more.  Below are my original notes from the show. Musician and author of White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story, Sean Kelley and Continental Drifter and Guitar player of The Bangles, Vicki Peterson are my guests for episode 1428. White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story follows ten disparate musicians from humble beginnings at a dive bar residency in Los Angeles through lineup changes, addiction, marriages, divorces, and industry letdowns. The Continental Drifters, composed of members of The Bangles, The Cowsills, The Dream Syndicate, The dB's, and more, found each because they'd been burned by the music industry and sought refuge in a freewheeling environment where they could experiment without constraint. When everything fell apart in New Orleans a decade later, they ended up with so much more. White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story Drops next Friday, Sept. 27 along with We're All Drifters: A Tribute To The Continental Drifters, a 2 CD tribute album featuring Marshall Crenshaw, Kim Richey, Rosie Flores and more. Find the book HERE. We have a great conversation about the book, the journey of the Continental Drifters and more. I had a blast getting to know Vicki and Sean. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Javier Jara

Hello friends! Austin based, Ecuadorian born, singer-songwriter Javier Jara is my guest for episode 1548! Javier's latest album, Our Rhythms, Our Voices, is available now on all streaming services. This album is an incredibly meaningful and timely project as it highlights and honors the Latin American population here in the United States during a time when immigrant voices and stories need to be told and uplifted in a positive light. Part oral history and part roots music experimentation, Our Rhythms, Our Voices aims to celebrate the Latin American community, their diversity, cultural heritage and contributions to this country and beyond. To create the album, Jara and his team of collaborators interviewed Latin American immigrants from all walks of life to create songs, using rhythms from their native lands - Yahir Durán, an outstanding Mexican songwriter in his own right, wrote a poem from each interview, then Jara set all the poems to music and string arrangements. Go to ourrhythmsourvoices.com for more info on the album and go to javierjara.com to connect with Javier. We have a great conversation about the album, Javier's dedication to activism through music, and much more. I hope you enjoy getting to know Javier. I sure did.
