    Effect On Emotions

Emotions are a funny thing. We all have ebbs and flows. I definitely have my highs and lows still. I think mindfulness has made me more aware of when I'm having a low or when I'm having overwhelming thoughts or even depression.

My mindfulness practice has helped me recognize that and get me into a better mindset more quickly instead of dwelling on it for days and weeks.

    Thoughts On Breathing

I really enjoy box breathing. I almost modified it to be more of a triangle breathing. The idea is that I will breathe in for a count of 4, hold it for a count of 4, and exhale for a count of 4.
Just doing that for a repetition of 20 times can be a form of meditation.

    Bullying Story

Bullying is a huge problem in schools, and it always has been, probably even back when I was a kid. I think mindfulness can help with bullying. I can't speak out of experience, but I think it can help with emotional regulation.

If you get bullied, you may have a fight-or-flight reactive response. However, how you react could make the situation better or worse through emotional regulation.

With mindfulness you also are a little bit more self-regulated. You're more aware of your surroundings and aware of your situations.

This situational awareness can keep you out of situations where you could get bullied.

    Effect On Emotions

Mindfulness helps me to validate and interact with the energy.

    Thoughts On Breathing

Your breath never leaves you. As a result, we always forget to access it because it's always in the now. So anchor into the breath.

    Bullying Story

I was called Natalie Bedard, retard. So you can imagine how that shaped my identity.
I'm biracial, also. I grew up in the northern part of Ontario, in Sudbury. So, going to school, my father wasn't around. I was not able to identify with my black side. Going into a school system and having trauma, my self-worth wasn't there.
At school, they couldn't understand why my IQ was so high, but my grades and tests were not. I looked at my biology, and I internalized it. But not so much that it limited me from moving forward.
It was almost as though I had some mindfulness. I was still really attached to my. curiosity and intuition.

    Effect On Emotions

Mindfulness provides me with a deeper, quiet place regardless of what's happening on the surface.

It's like if there's a storm occurring on the top of an ocean, but 20 feet down, things are calm.

I can get mad as heck and still know that there's a place inside me just watching my anger.

    Thoughts On Breathing

The student comes to the master and says breathing, breathing, breathing. Why are you always talking about breathing? So the master grabs his head and sticks it underneath the water in the fountain and holds it there for a while. Then he releases it and says to the student. Any questions?

Breathing is just a point of attention, but since you carry it with you wherever you are, it's not like a candle. You always have your breath.

Immediately bring your attention to your breath and because you are already conditioned that that is your meditative state, it results in a feeling of calm.

    Bullying Story

I was bullied as a child. I'm 60% Hungarian, and we go back to the Huns and the Mongolians. So you can imagine that my people are the ones playing goal hockey with a Lamb's head. I've always been big.
When I was in elementary school, all the girls used to call me cooties. My mindfulness and meditation practice have allowed me to get to the point where I have some insight as to what might have been going on with them and the peer pressure that they had.
Subsequently, mindfulness has helped me to have a certain forgiveness. If I had been more mindful, I might not have been as traumatized by it.

    Effect On Emotions

When you take mindfulness and you live in the moment and you think, I'm feeling anxious so how do I get myself out of this anxious feeling, then you try to settle yourself and you sit on the end of your bed and you breathe in and you breathe out you can settle yourself down.
I don't really get angry that much. Being in the moment with mindfulness can really help you regulate your emotions just by being calm.

    Thoughts On Breathing

I know that there are many breathing techniques, but the one I like the most is one that isn't talked about much.
For me, I like to listen to music. Music comes to me in regular patterns, and it is built around a structure. When you listen to it, you start to breathe in the cadence of the music.
This can help you take your mind off of the issue and start to incorporate your mind into the song.
You will start to calm down and start breathing into the music, into the phrases. That really helps me.

    Bullying Story

I don't really remember being bullied as a kid. That was pretty much because I didn't notice anybody around me when I was younger.
I think in any case, with bullying, mindfulness can help a person by helping them realize what is important in the moment. Bullies really have a hard time. They are trying to transfer their hard time onto somebody else.
Knowing that, we can have a little bit more compassion towards that person.
