How to Find Joy in the Caregiving Experience

During her caregiving experience, author Alexandra Grabbe came to know her mom on a deeper level and found joy in their last days together.   Alexandra juggled caregiving responsibilities and managing her business, trying to give her best to both jobs.  Her mom Beatrice was a fierce career woman who knew her mind.  Alexandra experienced all the challenges that come with solo caregiving - overwhelm, fatigue - and yet was able to find the beauty as well.  Beatrice talked with people that her daughter couldn’t see, a phenomenon known as deathbed visioning.  Daughter and mother got comfortable with the visions as Beatrice declined toward death.  Alexandra describes the joy she found in caring for her mom in her memoir Seeing Joy: A Story of Life, Death, and What Comes Next. Listen to the Heart of a Pediatric Death Doula

Today’s guest Alexandra Dionisio offers an honest look at the work of a pediatric death doula, describing how she has learned to sit with hard truths and face them with an open heart.  As the host of the Learning To Say Goodbye podcast, Alexandra is exploring death, grief, and spirituality.  After losing four people she loved in quick succession - none of whom she got to say goodbye to - Alexandra transformed her grief into a mission.  Her work now focuses on helping families say the goodbyes she never could and honoring endings.  Alexandra acknowledges the challenges of working with a family with a dying child, including the emotional toll it takes to support parents experiencing anticipatory grief.  Her memoir Learning to Say Goodbye: A Memoir of Grief and Trust offers an honest look at grief without toxic positivity.   Connect with Pediatric Death Doula and Reiki Master Alexandra Dionisio: Website: learningtosaygoodbye.com Purchase your copy of Learning to Say Goodbye: A Memoir of Grief and Trust on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Strand Books.  Listen to the Learning to Say Goodbye podcast here. 3. Discover How Grief Care is Being Transformed by Technology

Discover How Grief Care is Being Transformed by Technology

Grief expert Melissa Lunardini is featured in this conversation about the potential and pitfalls of AI use in grief care. Being able to leverage technology for grief support can be a huge help, but as with any tech use, that support needs to be safe and appropriate.   Here are some highlights from this episode: Melissa believes it’s very important to recognize that while AI is technology, not all technology is AI.Text-based support (texting) is NOT AI; it’s simply SMS messaging that comes to a smart phone.  For many people who need support, receiving a text is the best way to access grief care.  Not every form of grief support works for every person - grief support groups or individual therapy might not be accessible or affordable. Some forms of AI can offer a risk to mental and emotional health, but the science around this topic is still developing. More research is needed. Learn About the Sacred Mission of The INN Between

By providing end of life care for the homeless population, The INN Between fills a special need in the Salt Lake City community.  Executive Director Jillian Olmsted’s journey with The INN Between is both personal and purposeful. Jillian’s connection to the mission was shaped by her own family’s experiences with cancer—within a single year, her mother, father, and stepfather each faced the disease. Two parents required hospice care before their deaths, and Jillian personally cared for her father as he underwent treatment while uninsured, unable to work, and potentially facing homelessness. These experiences gave her a profound appreciation for the dignity and comfort that hospice and respite care provide.  Listen to this episode to hear about the work being done at The INN Between.   Connect with The INN Between: Website: tibhospice.org Socials:  Facebook Instagram Twitter Linkedin Read more about Ernie’s wedding story here Donate here to support the work of The INN Between Connect with HaloCare: Website: halocaregroup.com HaloCare services for healthcare professionals: halocaregroup.com/healthcare-professionals Get more info about HaloCare for yourself or a loved one here Socials:  Facebook Instagram Twitter   LinkedIn Connect with HaloCare by phone at (888) 247-7102  Hospice Navigation Services understands that you need unbiased, expert support to have the best end of life experience possible.  And we believe you deserve to get good hospice care.  If you have questions about hospice care for yourself or someone you care about, Hospice Navigation Services can help.  It’s easy to connect by phone or video. 7. How to Manage Death Anxiety With Social Worker Rosie Gaston

How to Manage Death Anxiety With Social Worker Rosie Gaston

Most of us carry some fear of death, even if we rarely say it out loud. In this episode, we talk honestly with hospice Social Worker Rosie Gaston about death anxiety—what it feels like, where it comes from, and how to have conversations that reduce it. Death is a universal human experience that carries mystery, fear, and a lot of anxiety. In western culture, conversations about death don’t happen as early and often as they should to really be beneficial.   End of life and hospice workers deal with death and dying every day; it’s normal daily activity. Emotional boundaries help workers to sustain the work long term. For others, fear of death is common. It takes so many forms - fear of losing a loved one to death, anxiety over finances or legacy, fear of dying too early. Death anxiety takes many forms. Rosie describes the questions that she asks to start discussions that can reduce that fear. Great guidance from an experienced hospice social worker!  Connect with Hospice Social Worker Rosie Gaston:  Website https://www.abetterending.org/ Find resources for end of life care from Minnesota Network of Hospice and Palliative Care at mnhpc.com Connect with Lasting Remembrance to purchase a memorial blanket at lastingremembrance.com. MAR 20

Back to Basics: What You Need to Know About a Death Event at Home

This week’s episode features hospice nurse Shelley Henry in an in-depth discussion about what should happen when a death occurs at home.  Many hospice patients chose to die at home, in familiar surroundings with their family members.  It’s important that patients, caregivers, and end of life workers understand the things that happen at the time of a death. Here are some highlights to know: • A hospice team member might not be there when your Person dies.  • Hospice agencies don’t provide ongoing bedside services when a person is dying unless there are symptoms that need to be managed. • The hospice team supports the family when there’s a death, notifying authorities as required, and providing grief support for those at the bedside. • If the death occurs inside a facility like an assisted living facility or a nursing home, the hospice team will coordinate with the facility staff.  • Post-mortem care (respectful, gentle cleaning of a body after death) is often provided. • Narcotics should be destroyed in the home by the hospice nurse according to federal law. • Care at the time of death should never be hurried.  Family members and caregivers should feel supported and never rushed.  Get more information about hospice and connect with hospice nurse Shelley Henry at The Amity Group.
