“Organizing and Systematizing” the Temple Ceremony in a Worldwide Church

Abstract: The evolution of temple ceremonies in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reflects an ongoing effort to make sacred ordinances accessible and consistent throughout a worldwide Church while preserving their underlying covenants and doctrines. Beginning with Joseph Smith’s administration of the first endowment in Nauvoo in 1842 and his charge to Brigham Young to organize and systematize the ceremonies, this paper traces historical precedents for adjustments to temple worship. Drawing particularly on President Russell M. Nelson’s 2021 address “The Temple and Your Spiritual Foundation,” the study explains how continuing revelation guides procedural changes necessitated by expanding temple construction, diverse languages and cultures, and changing circumstances. Historical examples involving endowments, sealings, proxy ordinances, baptism, the sacrament, and healing blessings illustrate the distinction between adaptable methods and enduring spiritual principles. The analysis further examines temple symbolism, distinguishing the outward presentation of ordinances from the eternal realities they represent, including humanity’s progression toward the presence of God. By connecting historical developments with recent temple reforms, the author argues that procedural adjustments are consistent with the continuing Restoration and serve the larger purposes of facilitating temple participation, deepening spiritual understanding, and preparing God’s children for exaltation.
