The Histamine Hack, PMDD, and Progesterone Sensitivity: What's Really Going On

If you've been on social media lately, you've probably seen it: women swearing that a combo of Pepcid and Claritin, ordinary histamine blockers, gave them their life back during the worst days of their cycle. It sounds too simple to be real, and honestly, it kind of is. But the reason it's working for some women and doing absolutely nothing for others is the whole story, and it's a story almost nobody is explaining correctly. In this episode, I sit down with one of my all time favorite guests, Dr. Liz Bartman, to go deep into progesterone sensitivity, PMDD, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and how it's different from garden variety PMS. If you've ever felt like a completely different person for two weeks out of every month, only to feel like yourself again the second your period starts, this episode is going to make you feel seen in a way most conversations about "hormones" never do. We get into what's actually driving PMDD for so many women: an altered GABA receptor that stops responding correctly to a calming metabolite of progesterone called allopregnanolone. We talk about why histamine surges at exactly the wrong time in your cycle, how estrogen and progesterone are pulling the strings behind the scenes, and why some women feel like magic when they take progesterone while others feel like they've been poisoned by it. This is the foundational science you need before you try any protocol, viral or otherwise. This is part one of a two part series. Part two gets into what to actually do about it, but you need this piece first, because throwing supplements or medications at PMDD without understanding your own biology is how so many women end up frustrated and back at square one. In This Episode, We Cover: The real difference between PMS and PMDD, and why PMDD is classified as a mental health condition, not just a hormone imbalance Why normal estrogen and progesterone levels don't rule out PMDD, and what's actually going on in the brain instead What allopregnanolone is, how it works on GABA receptors, and why some women's brains stop responding to it correctly The viral H1/H2 histamine blocker protocol: what it is, why it can bring real relief, and why it isn't a PMDD cure-all The surprising role histamine plays as a neurotransmitter, including its connection to your morning cortisol response Why PMDD symptoms show up specifically in the second half of your cycle, and how estrogen, progesterone, and mast cells are all involved Why roughly half of women with diagnosed PMDD don't tolerate progesterone well, and what that tells us about the root cause How your gut microbiome, specific probiotic strains, and your nervous system state all influence GABA receptor expression and histamine regulation Why declining egg quality and corpus luteum function can cause progesterone to drop too fast in the luteal phase Who This Episode Is For This is for any woman who has ever felt like her brain and body get hijacked in the days before her period, and who has been told it's "just PMS" or that she's overreacting. It's for women who have tried progesterone and either felt amazing or felt so much worse, and never got a real explanation why. It's also for anyone who has seen the histamine blocker trend online and wants to understand the actual mechanism before trying it themselves.     Sponsors Join the Midlife Women's Peptide Program today and get started for less than $200 a month! Quick Hits: Decoding Fibroids: Unmasking Causes & Effective Solutions

Welcome to Quick Hits — where we bring you the most impactful moments from past episodes in under 15 minutes. Today's clip comes from one of our most replayed conversations. If you want the full episode, check the link in the description below. Listen to the full episode. Download on iTunes. This weeks quick hit we are jumping right into a very important topic: uterine fibroids. Maybe you have experience with fibroids, or maybe you do not even really know what they are yet. Either way, this is a conversation every woman should understand. Fibroids are incredibly common. It is estimated that up to 75 to 80 percent of women may develop fibroids during their lifetime, and many women have them without even knowing they are there. They are also highly prevalent in perimenopause, which is when many women start noticing heavier periods, more pelvic pressure, more bloating, more pain, worsening PMS, and new urinary symptoms. In this episode, we go deep into what fibroids are, how they may impact your body and hormones, what symptoms to watch for, and what you can do to better understand, prevent, or reduce the growth of uterine fibroids. This is especially important because fibroids are not just a "period problem." They can affect bleeding, iron levels, fertility, pelvic pain, bladder symptoms, sex, and quality of life. And no, you should not have to just suffer through it because "that's normal for women." In This Episode, We Cover: What uterine fibroids are and why they are so common Which age group is most likely to be diagnosed with fibroids Why fibroids are especially common in perimenopause The hormones that influence fibroid growth Common signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids Where women may feel pain or pressure from fibroids How fibroids can affect periods, bleeding, fertility, and quality of life What to do if you think you may have fibroids Common urinary symptoms associated with fibroids Why painful intercourse may be a sign of fibroids Important contributing factors behind fibroid development and growth Which hormone fibroids are most sensitive to Why xenoestrogens may matter and how to reduce exposure Which vitamin may be important for fibroid prevention Why certain peptides may not be appropriate for women with a history of fibroids     Sponsors Try Mito Q Hormone and metabolic control. Code: MARTEL10     Are you in perimenopause or postmenopause and struggling with symptoms—but not getting the support you deserve? Pellets, Periods, and Not Giving a Damn: A Midlife Hormone Roundtable with Dr. Amie Hornaman & Elle Russ

This is not just a conversation about hormones. It is a conversation about what it means to age as a woman in a culture that is obsessed with youth, terrified of wrinkles, and wildly uncomfortable with female power after 40. In this roundtable episode, I sit down with Dr. Amy Horniman and Elle Russ to talk about the very real physical, emotional, and identity shifts that happen as women move through perimenopause and menopause. We get into everything from early perimenopause symptoms, thyroid issues, SHBG, testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, libido, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, pelvic floor changes, and how all of these things can affect the way women feel in their bodies. But we also go deeper into the emotional side of all of it. What happens when you are no longer getting the same attention? What happens when your face changes, your body changes, and you realize how much of your worth was tied to being seen as young or desirable? We also have a very honest conversation about hormone replacement therapy, why individualized care matters so much, why pellets are not always the answer, and why so many women are still being failed by outdated medical thinking. And from there, we talk about Botox, beauty standards, confidence, sex, self-worth, and why this stage of life can also be one of the most freeing. Because yes, aging is real. But so is wisdom. So is power. So is the version of yourself that finally stops asking for permission. In this episode, we cover: Early perimenopause signs and how differently they can show up for women How thyroid issues and elevated SHBG can affect sex hormones The difference between rhythmic and static hormone dosing Testosterone for women, including libido, muscle, mood, vaginal health, and pelvic floor support Why so many women struggle to get proper hormone support from conventional medicine The pros and cons of pellets versus creams and injections How aging affects confidence, sex drive, self-image, and identity Botox, beauty standards, and the pressure women feel to stay young Why women deserve to age on their own terms without shame How midlife can become a more authentic, confident, and powerful season of life Who this episode is for This episode is for women in perimenopause and menopause who are trying to understand what is happening to their hormones, their bodies, their libido, their confidence, and their sense of self. It is especially for women who are curious about HRT, frustrated by outdated medical advice, or wrestling with how to navigate aging in a way that feels empowering instead of defeating.   Dr. Amie Hornaman "The Thyroid-Fixer", is host to the top-rated podcast in medicine and alternative health: The Thyroid Fixer™, with listeners around the globe. The Truth About Female Desire, Orgasms, and Sex That We Were Never Taught with Dr. Sally Greenwald

If you've ever wondered why you don't want your husband to walk through the door and rip your clothes off anymore, this episode is for you. If you've ever quietly believed something was wrong with you because you don't orgasm easily, or at all, this episode is for you too. I sat down with Dr. Sally Greenwald, a board-certified OB/GYN with specialized training in menopause medicine, and what she shared genuinely stopped me in my tracks. We were taught to protect ourselves from pregnancy and disease. We were never taught how our bodies actually work. No one explained the difference between the desire that hits you out of nowhere and the desire that shows up once you're already in the moment. No one drew us a map of our own anatomy. No one told us what happens to any of it once perimenopause and menopause enter the picture. Dr. Greenwald walks us through the real data on desire, arousal, and orgasm. Why only a small percentage of women maintain the "spontaneous" desire we see on TV, and why that has nothing to do with being broken. What actually happens to your body hormonally and physically during this stage of life, and why so many women are quietly suffering through pain, dryness, or a total loss of interest without knowing there's a name for it and a way through it. We get into the anatomy no one taught us in school, the science behind why vibrators aren't just for fun anymore, and why scheduling sex might be the most underrated tool in your relationship. This conversation will change how you think about your own body. It might also make you a little angry about what you were never told. Both are fair. In This Episode, We Cover: The real difference between the desire you see in movies and the desire most women actually have Why so many women think something is wrong with them, and why they're wrong about that What's actually happening in your body during perimenopause and menopause that no one warned you about A simple way to figure out if your low desire is physical, psychological, or something else entirely The one belief about your sex drive that's holding you back more than any hormone ever could The anatomy lesson you should have gotten in school but never did Why one tool might change your entire experience of pleasure, and the science behind it The orgasm myth almost every woman believes, and what the data actually shows A surprisingly simple shift that can lower pressure and bring back intimacy Why sex might be doing more for your health than you realize This episode is for the woman who loves her partner but doesn't understand why she doesn't want sex anymore. It's for the woman who has never had an easy time reaching orgasm and has spent years quietly thinking that meant something was wrong with her. It's for anyone entering perimenopause or menopause and noticing changes in their body that no one prepared them for. And it's for every woman who is tired of comparing her real life to what she sees on a screen.     Sponsors Get 30% off BATCH Gummies. Go to hellobatch.com/HORMONE and use code HORMONE at checkout. Part 3 The Midlife Stress Crash: What Your Midlife Breakdown Is Actually Trying to Tell You

You've made it to part three, and this is the one that ties everything together. If parts one and two left you with a clearer picture of your stress system and your sleep, this episode takes you somewhere deeper: into your thyroid, your brain chemistry, and a layer of midlife that almost nobody talks about on a podcast about hormones. I'm breaking down why your thyroid and your adrenal system are locked in a relationship that most doctors never explain, and why a normal TSH does not mean your thyroid is actually working. Then we go into your neurotransmitters. Serotonin, dopamine, GABA, the gut connection. If you've ever wondered why you suddenly feel less resilient, less motivated, or like you don't know who you are anymore, this is the missing piece. And if you've been prescribed an antidepressant during perimenopause or menopause, I want you to hear this part especially. But this episode also goes somewhere I don't always go. We talk about the identity and spiritual layer of this transition. The old patterns, the buried feelings, the relationships and jobs that suddenly feel impossible to keep tolerating. I share something personal about what came up for me last year, and why I believe what feels like falling apart in midlife might actually be something else entirely. And because I know all of this can feel like a lot, I close the series with exactly where I'd start if I were you. What to test, what to ask for, and what I actually do every night for my own sleep. In This Episode, We Cover: Why a normal TSH result does not mean your thyroid is functioning properly The two way relationship between chronic stress, cortisol, and thyroid hormone conversion Why so many women are prescribed antidepressants in perimenopause and menopause when the real driver may be hormonal How estradiol affects serotonin (your sense of okay-ness) and dopamine (your motivation and drive) The role of progesterone and GABA in anxiety, racing thoughts, and the 2 to 4 AM wake up How chronic cortisol elevation disrupts neurotransmitter balance across the board Why 90 percent of your serotonin is made in your gut, not your brain The spiritual and identity layer of perimenopause and menopause, and why old patterns resurface now A personal story about a repeating pattern Karen had to finally face What Karen recommends first: the four point cortisol and DHEA test, and why it matters more than a single blood draw Karen's actual nightly routine for sleep, including HRT and magnesium Who This Episode Is For This one is for you if you have been told your labs are normal but you do not feel normal. It's for the woman who has been on an antidepressant for years and has quietly wondered if her hormones were ever part of the conversation. It's for anyone who feels more anxious, less motivated, or less like themselves than they used to, and cannot figure out why. And it's for the woman who feels like midlife is cracking something open in her, whether that shows up as a relationship that no longer fits, a job that drains her, or a feeling she cannot quite name yet.     Sponsors Timeline is offering up to 39% off your first order of Mitopure. Why You Struggle to Build Muscle in Midlife (Even If You're Doing Everything Right) with Liz Plosser

You're eating "pretty well." You're moving your body. So why does it feel like your muscle is disappearing and your effort isn't paying off the way it used to? In this episode, I sit down with Liz Plosser, former editor-in-chief of Women's Health and a woman who has spent her entire career reporting on health and fitness, to talk about what changes in midlife and why the old rules stop working. Then we go deep on amino acids, what they actually are, why your body becomes less efficient at using them as estrogen declines, and why an essential amino acid supplement might be one of the smartest, simplest things you can add to your routine. We also break down the real difference between amino acids and creatine, why BCAAs may not be worth your money, and how to build a stack that actually fits a real life, not a biohacker's spreadsheet. If you've ever felt like your body stopped responding to the things that used to work, this episode will explain why, and more importantly, what to do about it. In This Episode, We Cover: How perimenopause changed Liz's approach to fitness after decades as a cardio-focused marathoner Why muscle loss accelerates in midlife and what that means for your metabolism, strength, and aging The injury that led Liz to fall in love with strength training and chase a 280-pound deadlift PR Why it's okay to want to look strong, lean, and confident, not just "healthy" What essential amino acids are and why your body can't use protein without all nine Why women become less efficient at absorbing amino acids from food as estrogen declines The difference between amino acids and creatine, and why you likely need both Why branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) may not be worth the hype or the money New research on creatine and brain health, including higher doses on high-demand days How to build a simple, realistic daily protein and supplement routine, especially if you're on a GLP-1 Who This Episode Is For This episode is for the woman who feels like her body just isn't responding the way it used to, no matter how "right" she's doing things. It's for women in perimenopause and menopause who are confused about protein, curious about amino acids and creatine, or tired of conflicting advice from every corner of the internet. It's also for anyone on a GLP-1 medication who needs a realistic way to protect muscle while eating less.
