Nutrition In, Toxins Out: The Case For Algae

In this episode of The Natural Heart Doctor Show, I sit down with Catharine Arnston, PhD, a friend of nearly a decade and the founder of ENERGYbits. Our introduction was not exactly professional. My one-year-old daughter crawled off at a conference and came back with green all over her mouth, having helped herself to a bag of Catharine's tablets. That moment is a decent summary of the whole argument: this is food, not a supplement, and a toddler recognized it before I did. Catharine walks through what actually separates the two algae. Spirulina is a cyanobacteria, so there is no cellulose wall for your body to break down, and its protein arrives already in amino acid form alongside the B vitamins that convert it into steady energy. She uses a Lego analogy for why complete proteins matter, since your body is building far more than muscle with them. Chlorella works the other direction. Its hard cell wall binds heavy metals and other unwanted compounds, its chlorophyll travels through the liver and colon, and its fiber feeds the gut microbiome. She also makes a point I had not connected before: chlorella is high in tryptophan, tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, and most of your serotonin is made and used in the gut, where it drives bowel motility. Her practical tip for stubborn cases is fresh organic pineapple, and I would underline the organic part. We spend real time on sourcing, because it is where most of this falls apart. Catharine explains why she will not use algae from lakes or oceans, why high-heat drying deactivates the enzymes and pigments people are paying for, and what it took to find growers who meet her standard. From my side, this is the same thing I tell every patient. Skip the lab-made shelf, get the foundational food right, and give the body what it needs to do its own work. - - - - -  Catharine Arnston, PhD is the founder, CEO, and Chief Science Officer of ENERGYbits, a microalgae company whose spirulina and chlorella tablets are used by functional medicine practitioners, heart and longevity clinics, and professional sports teams. Her work began as personal research. When her younger sister was preparing for chemotherapy and was told to move to an alkaline diet with no explanation of what that meant, Catharine, then an MBA working in international business, set out to find the answer for her. That research led her to spirulina and chlorella, and to seventeen years of studying how they are grown, dried, and absorbed. She earned her PhD in the field and is now finishing Love Your Health to Bits with Algae, a book with roughly two thousand references, due out in January 2027. - - - - -  This episode is proudly brought to you by Energybits! Lower Your Blood Pressure Naturally By Raising Nitric Oxide

In this solo episode of The Natural Heart Doctor Show, I take on one of the most common questions I hear: what do you actually do about high blood pressure? My answer starts by reframing the reading itself. A high number is a sign that something deeper is going on, and one factor that too often gets missed is nitric oxide, a gas your body makes that signals the muscle in your artery walls to relax. When those vessels open, blood moves more easily and pressure eases. Nitric oxide also works as a natural anticoagulant, which is part of why it matters so much for circulation. Then I walk through where nitric oxide actually comes from. Food nitrates in beets, arugula, and leafy greens meet the bacteria in a healthy mouth, turn into nitrite, and convert into nitric oxide with the help of stomach acid. That pathway explains two things people rarely connect: antiseptic mouthwash and acid-blocking drugs can quietly work against you. I also cover the amino-acid route, with L-arginine, L-citrulline, and L-taurine feeding nitric oxide synthase, the role of UVA sunlight on your skin, and why I always come back to the same rule: test, don't guess. - - - - - Jack Wolfson, DO, FACC Websites: https://drjackwolfson.com/; https://naturalheartdoctor.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drjackwolfson Ready to move past the confusion and fear of typical heart health approaches?  Visit naturalheartdoctor.com/discovery to schedule your free discovery call and start your journey toward a 100-year heart with real, evidence-based answers. - - - - - PODCAST  Thank you for listening.  Please subscribe and share.  This podcast is produced by DrTalks.com  https://drtalks.com/podcast-service/

Why I Stopped Blaming Genes for Heart Disease

In this conversation with Patti Wartella-Simab on Coffee with Patti, I share how I went from mainstream cardiologist to the Natural Heart Doctor. I talk about my father's illness, the moment a young chiropractor helped me see health differently, and why I have come to believe the body is built to be well when we take away what harms it and add back what it needs. I keep returning to one simple idea: too much bad stuff, not enough good stuff. From there we get into the everyday basics I care about most: spending real time outside, morning and daytime light, better sleep, more seafood and whole foods, and lowering the chronic stress that quietly wears on the heart. I also explain why I put "Think Well" alongside "Eat Well" and "Live Well," and why, for me, finding your happy is part of healing. None of this is medical advice, and it is not about stopping anything on your own. It is an invitation to ask better questions about the root cause and to work with someone who will teach, not just prescribe. - - - - - About the Guest: Patti Wartella-Simab is the host of Coffee with Patti, a conversational interview podcast built around honest, personal stories told over a cup of coffee. Across her episodes she sits down with a wide range of guests, from local leaders to health and wellness voices, to talk about resilience, human connection, and living well. After a heart scare of her own led her to Dr. Wolfson's work, she invited him on to share his approach to root-cause heart health with her listeners. The Superfood Your Cardiologist Forgot to Mention

In this episode, I sit down with Doug Evans to make the case for the humble sprout as one of the most underrated foods for your heart. Most people push sprouts to the side of the plate as a garnish. Doug and I think that's a mistake. We talk about broccoli sprouts and sulforaphane, the plant compound that research has tied to the NRF2 pathway, glutathione production, and your body's own antioxidant and detox defenses. For me, that matters because oxidative stress and the health of your endothelium sit closer to the root of heart disease than the LDL and HDL numbers most cardiologists chase. Doug also walks through the practical side: which seeds to start with, why three-day-old sprouts are the most potent, how to tell healthy root hairs from mold, and why growing your own runs about a fifth of the grocery-store price. If you want one simple daily habit that lines up with how your body was actually designed to heal, this conversation is worth your time. - - - - - About the Guest: Doug Evans is the co-founder of The Sprouting Company and the author of The Sprout Book, a top-100 Amazon bestseller. A longtime pioneer in the natural-food world, he has spent more than thirty years championing whole, plant-based foods. After moving to the Mojave Desert and landing in a literal food desert, Doug began sprouting nearly all of his own food and turned that experience into a mission to make countertop sprouting simple, affordable, and accessible. He designed The Sprouting Company's growing kit and tracked down high-glucoraphanin broccoli seeds so anyone can grow nutrient-dense sprouts at home in days, without soil, sunshine, or fertilizer. The Cellular Energy Crisis At The Root Of Heart Disease And Fatigue

In this conversation, Ari Whitten and I go straight to the cellular level to answer a question most of cardiology never asks: where does your energy actually come from, and what happens to your heart when it runs low? Ari walks through the work of Dr. Robert Naviaux and the ‘cell danger response,’ the idea that your mitochondria are constantly reading the environment and deciding whether to make energy or switch into defense mode. Stressors like toxins, junk food, poor sleep, and chronic psychological stress push them toward defense, and that shift shows up as fatigue, oxidative stress, and inflammation, the same drivers I see underneath so much heart disease. From there, we get practical. Ari breaks down why how you breathe matters as much as how much you move, how a simple breath-hold test reflects your body's oxygen delivery, and why 20 to 30 minutes of daily movement may be one of the most powerful things you can do for your heart. It all comes back to what I teach every day: Eat Well, Live Well, Think Well. Give your cells what they were designed for, and your energy and your heart tend to follow. - - - - - About the Guest: Ari Whitten, MS, is the founder of The Energy Blueprint and one of the most respected evidence-based voices on fatigue, energy, and mitochondrial health. He holds a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine, a bachelor's in Kinesiology, and certifications from the National Academy of Sports Medicine as a Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist. After losing nearly a year of his own life to severe chronic fatigue in his twenties, Ari devoted his career to understanding how cellular energy is built and broken. He is the bestselling author of Eat for Energy and The Ultimate Guide to Red Light Therapy, and has taught his science-first approach to energy on stages around the world. Why High Cholesterol May Be a Repair Signal, Not the Enemy

Cardiologists spend their careers talking about cholesterol. On this episode, I wanted to go one level deeper, down to the cell membrane, because that's where heart health is really decided. Justine Stenger has spent years studying phospholipids like phosphatidylcholine, the fats that build the membranes wrapping every one of your cells and your mitochondria. We talk about why the membrane, not the nucleus, acts as the brain of the cell, and how cholesterol fits into that picture as a helper rather than a villain. Justine walks through how a phospholipid shortage may push the liver to make more cholesterol to repair membrane damage, why our modern toxic load makes that shortage so common, and what food, oral, and clinical approaches she looks at to support cellular repair. We also cover the lab markers you can track over time, from cholesterol and triglycerides to homocysteine, so this stays practical, not just theoretical. - - - - - About the Guest: Justine Stenger is a cellular-health educator and the Lead Educator at BodyBio, where she teaches practitioners and patients about phospholipids, fatty acids, and mitochondrial health. She earned her degree from the University of Alberta, trained in holistic nutrition through Bauman College, and completed her Functional Medicine training through the Institute for Functional Medicine, where she is a certified Functional Medicine Health Coach. She is also Bredesen (ReCODE) trained. With more than a decade supporting people with complex, chronic illness, Justine focuses on cell membrane medicine: giving cells the raw materials they need to repair, recharge, and do the work they were built to do. What Nearly Put This Heart Surgeon On His Own Operating Table

Heart surgery can treat a blockage, but it cannot fix why the disease developed. In this episode of The Natural Heart Doctor Show, Dr. Philip Ovadia joins Dr. Jack Wolfson to discuss insulin resistance, inflammation, blood sugar, processed food, cholesterol testing, surgical preparation, and the whole-food approach he uses to help patients stay off his operating table. - - - - -  About the Guest: Dr. Philip Ovadia is a cardiovascular surgeon with more than 20 years of experience treating heart disease. After recognizing that he was a morbidly obese, prediabetic heart surgeon headed toward his own operating table, he began questioning the conventional nutrition advice he had learned throughout his medical training. Dr. Ovadia transformed his own health by losing 100 pounds and reversing his prediabetes, an experience that reshaped both his personal life and medical practice. Today, through his educational platform I Fix Hearts and his Amazon best-selling book, Stay Off My Operating Table, he focuses on helping people understand the root causes of heart disease, including insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, poor metabolic health, and the impact of nutrition on long-term cardiovascular risk.
