Steps to Become a More Confident Leader (FBF)

Confidence isn’t something people are born with — it’s something they build. This week’s Flashback Friday episode takes us back to October 2022, as we celebrate Kellie’s 12-year Active Duty Navy anniversary THIS SATURDAY! In this episode, Kellie shares her personal leadership journey and how confidence wasn’t something that magically appeared overnight; even years into her military career. From stepping into small leadership roles as a kid to growing through challenges in the Navy and beyond, she opens up about the reality that leadership is built through consistent action, not perfection. So many people hold themselves back because they believe they’re “just not naturally a leader.” Maybe you want to speak up more, take initiative, step outside your comfort zone, or trust yourself more — but don’t know where to start. This episode breaks down three practical ways to begin building confidence and becoming the leader you’re capable of being:Get involved.Reflect on your growth.Find mentors who challenge and inspire you. Whether you’re a student, young professional, service member, creator, or simply someone looking to become more confident in everyday life, this conversation is a reminder that leadership starts long before a title is given. It starts the moment you decide you’re capable of more. Your confidence journey starts here! Episode originally aired October 28, 2022. Enjoyed this episode? From Naval Officer to Hollywood: Making Time for the Passion You Can’t Ignore (ft. Rylan Tuohy, Viral Sensation, Writer, Director, Naval Academy Grad)

Most people wait until life slows down to pursue what they love. Rylan built a filmmaking career in the middle of one of the most demanding environments in the country.  Before content creation was a career, before “doing both” was a trend, he was a physics major at the Naval Academy, making viral videos in his dorm room, proving you didn’t have to choose between discipline and creativity.  In this episode, Kellie interviews longtime friend Rylan Tuohy: writer, director, entrepreneur, former Naval Officer, and someone she has known for over 15 years. Kellie and Rylan attended the United States Naval Academy together in 2013 and 2014, during which Kellie watched him become one of the earliest examples of what it truly meant to “do both.” While balancing the demands of the Academy and studying applied physics, Rylan was also creating videos, producing the infamous Navy football and Army-Navy "Spirit Spots," and building viral YouTube content long before influencing or content creation were considered viable career paths. The two even worked together as Army-Navy game correspondents and collaborated on several of the videos that helped make Rylan one of the most recognizable creators in the military space at the time. In this conversation, Rylan opens up about balancing his creative passion with the structure and pressure of military life, why he chose the Naval Academy over film school, and how he learned to be incredibly intentional with his time. He talks about creating without overthinking, trusting his instincts, and making time for what he wanted to do — not just what he had to do. Kellie and Rylan also dive into the moment he realized storytelling and filmmaking were no longer just hobbies but his true calling. He shares what it was like to leave the Navy, bet on himself fully, and pursue production and Hollywood full-time, a decision that ultimately led him to found his own production company and direct projects tied to Top Gun: Maverick, Masters of the Air, The Terminal List, and more. This is a vulnerable and honest conversation about creativity, pressure, transition, discipline, identity, and learning to pursue a life that feels aligned rather than simply stable. Rylan is truly one of the pioneers of what “doing both” looks like, and Kellie is honored to finally share his story. My Personal Tips to Prepare You For Plebe Summer, Navy Boot Camp, OCS, or ODS! (FBF)

In this episode, Kellie talks about one of the most common questions she’s asked: how do you prepare for Navy training? Whether you’ve just enlisted, commissioned, or been selected for an Officer program—heading to Boot Camp, OCS, ODS, or even the U.S. Naval Academy (the best university in the country, if you ask her)—one thing is certain: preparation is everything. Kellie originally shared this episode on her previous show, MissUnderstood, to help future Sailors and Officers get ready for one of the most challenging and rewarding chapters of their lives based on her personal experience. She breaks down what you need to know before you ever step foot in a Navy training environment—because signing the dotted line was just the beginning. Drawing from her experience as a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and nearly 5 years as a Navy recruiter & working in recruiting, Kellie offers practical advice on what to focus on before you arrive, how to mentally and physically prepare, and what it truly means to embody the Navy’s core values of honor, courage, and commitment. Get ready to take the leap! Originally released June 12, 2020. Enjoyed this episode? She Didn't Fit the Stereotype, So She Changed it: 5 Rejections, 1 Calling (ft. Ange Everington, Firefighter & Founder Blue Light Health Club)

You may not expect a firefighter to look like Ange Everington: confident, feminine, outspoken, vulnerable, and building a platform online--but that’s exactly the point. Kellie interviews Ange Everington, a full-time firefighter based in England, founder of The Blue Light Health Club, and a woman using both her career and her platform to show other women what’s possible. Ange shares how serving others was never just a job for her, it was a calling she felt from a young age. But finding where she was meant to serve took intention, self-awareness, and persistence. She talks about how she methodically worked through different paths before realizing firefighting was where she belonged, and why purpose is often less about instant clarity and more about continuing to pursue what keeps pulling you back. That persistence showed up again when it took her SIX attempts to get into the firefighter academy. This conversation goes deeper than career success. Kellie and Ange unpack why representation matters so much — especially for women in male-dominated spaces. Because people need to SEE women doing these jobs, leading in these rooms, speaking in schools, showing up online, and owning space unapologetically in order to believe they can too. Ange talks openly about why she chose to share her life on social media, not for attention, but because visibility creates permission. Every time a young woman sees someone who looks like her, balancing strength and femininity, leadership and softness, ambition and authenticity, it quietly expands what feels possible. The episode also touches on mental health, burnout, and the courage it took for Ange to temporarily step away from firefighting to reset and prioritize her well-being — something so many first responders silently struggle with. This is a conversation about tenacity, purpose, visibility, and the responsibility that comes with being the example you once needed yourself. Redefining Failure: Why "Failing" is the Best Thing That's Happened to You (FBF)

Happy flashback Friday! In honor of Kellie speaking atHarvard University today (yay!!), bringing back one of the episodes from 2020 which discussed one of her favorite topics in her keynote: failure. We’ve all been through it: we fail, we cry, and then wefigure out how to get back up again. It’s tough, it sucks, and most of the timewe don’t understand why it has to be such a necessary part of the journey.Tough luck. Failure is 100% necessary to grow. We don’t hope to fail, but whenwe do, we learn. So… does that mean we ever really failed to begin with? In this episode, I’m transparent, sassy, and emotional (awinning combination) but most of all, I want to make sure you walk away with abetter understanding of why you needed to go through life’s hard parts to grow.My personal experience with failure ranges from falling at a state trackcompetition to bombing college exams, to changing my career in the Navy, tofinishing as the runner-up at MISS CALIFORNIA USA in January 2020. I’ll walk you through four reasons why failure may be thebest thing that’s ever happened to you, because I’ve been through it too, andhow to redefine what it really means to “fail.” Strap in, it’s an emotional one. You’ll walk away with notonly a better understanding of my personal journey, but your own, and why youmay have never really failed to begin with. Challenges We've Faced in a Male-Dominated Career & How We Grew From Them ft. Jackie Barnum Fox (FBF)

In this episode, Kellie talks about what it’s really like to work in a male-dominated field—and the constant battle against stereotypes about how women “should” act, look, or lead. Originally from her previous show, "MissUnderstood," this conversation dives deep into the challenges women face while carving out space for themselves in environments where they’re often the minority. Kellie is joined by her Naval Academy roommate of four years and best friend of ten years, (then) Captain Jackie Barnum Fox, a 2014 U.S. Naval Academy graduate and Marine Corps Logistics Officer. Together, they share honest stories about navigating expectations, finding confidence, and claiming your voice in rooms that weren’t always built for you. Captain Barnum, who has served tours in Okinawa, Japan and California—with deployments to the Philippines, Republic of Korea, and the United Arab Emirates—opens up about leadership, resilience, and the power of authenticity. She’s also a proud dog mom to Ruby, loves coffee and "Friends " quotes, and continues to inspire others through her service and example. This episode is for every woman learning to own her space, speak her truth, and redefine what leadership looks like. Note: originally aired May 20, 2020.
