She recounts confronting her abuser, reclaiming her innocence, and discovering a forgiveness that neither excuses the unforgivable nor requires reconciliation. Mother and son read the letters that helped reroute the pain of their family history: hers to the father who violated her trust, and the prophetic letter she later sent Jaymee when addiction had brought him to his knees—a letter that did not shame him into changing, but loved him into remembering who he was.
