Trauma Healing for Christian Women - Regulate Emotions, Intrusive Thoughts, Nervous System, Anxiousness, Overthinking, EMDR

Michelle Croyle, Licensed Professional Counselor, EMDR Therapist, Christian

Do you love God deeply but still feel anxious, overwhelmed, or unable to experience the peace you know He promises? Have people you trusted—relationships you valued, or even places that should have been safe—left you feeling deeply wounded, guarded, and unsure who you can trust anymore, including yourself or even God? Have you tried to pray the pain away, do all the right things, push through it, avoid it, or outthink it, yet still feel something unsettled deep inside? Do you wish you could calm your mind and emotions, reset your nervous system, and finally experience peace with yourself and with God again? I'm so glad you're here. In this podcast, I'll help you make sense of what you've been feeling and why it's been so hard to get unstuck. We'll explore how painful experiences can affect your mind, body, and nervous system—and why the reactions you've been having actually make sense. You don't have to figure this out alone. In each episode, I'll come alongside you, sharing insights from evidence-based, trauma-informed psychology thoughtfully integrated with the truth of the Christian faith. Together, we'll bring clarity to what you're experiencing, normalize the struggles you may have been quietly carrying, and explore practical ways to move toward the peace, emotional safety, and deeper connection with God that your heart longs for. Hi, I'm Michelle. I'm a wife, a mom, a dog mom, and a lifelong Christian, having been saved at the age of five, but that's also around the time when anxiety took root inside me. As I grew older, intrusive and ruminating thoughts, OCD behaviors, nervousness, and even panic attacks interrupted my peace and kept my mind and body on high alert. I tried thinking better thoughts, focusing on Bible verses, casting down the lies of the enemy, praying harder, and even tried traditional talk therapy, but I couldn't get past the feeling that I was spiritually failing or had somehow made God mad. However, after years of internal struggle, I eventually realized the problem wasn't that something was wrong with me or with my faith. The deeper issue was unaddressed trauma in my nervous system. You see, many of us can carry a tremendous amount of emotional, mental, relational, and even physical pain for a long time—until our bodies simply can't hold it anymore. The ways we learn to survive hard experiences often help us get through them, but they aren't always the same things that lead us into healing. And most of the time, we can't simply think our way out of it or pray our way through it alone. True healing often requires gently processing what our nervous systems have been carrying. The beautiful part is that God designed our bodies with the capacity to heal. He created our minds and nervous systems with remarkable resilience, and over time, both science and Scripture have revealed wisdom that helps us participate in that healing process. After becoming a licensed professional counselor and a trauma-informed, certified EMDR therapist—and after experiencing profound healing myself through excellent trauma therapy—I want you to know something very clearly: there is real hope for healing. And that hope is available to you, too. Now, I have the privilege of helping Christian women just like you to find compassion and grace for themselves and as we work toward meaningful healing by helping you understand how your past experiences have shaped your present struggles, while also equipping you with practical tools and actionable steps to move forward with greater peace, clarity, and emotional safety in an environment where you are finally safe to be seen and heard just as you are, no shame, no guilt, just healing. If you are ready to finally understand what's happening inside you and to break free from the deep wounds that have been holding you back, I'm ready to help. So, grab your favorite beverage, a box of tissues, and kick your self-criticism to the curb. It's time to pay atten

Why Is My Childhood Still Affecting Me? - How Childhood Trauma Shows Up in Adulthood CPTSD

Why Is My Childhood Still Affecting Me? How Childhood Trauma Shows Up in Adulthood Do you ever wonder, "Why is my childhood still affecting me when I'm an adult now?" Maybe you understand what happened in your childhood. You've prayed about it, thought about it, talked about it, or tried to move past it. But certain situations still trigger anxiety, shame, people-pleasing, fear of rejection, overthinking, anger, relationship struggles, or the urge to shut down and protect yourself. You may know better now — but somehow, you still don't always feel differently. In this episode of Trauma Healing for Christian Women, Michelle Croyle, LPC, EMDR-Certified therapist, explains why childhood experiences can continue to affect your emotions, beliefs, relationships, and nervous system long after childhood is over — and why that doesn't mean you have to stay stuck there.   Why Does Childhood Trauma Affect You as an Adult? As children, we interpret painful, confusing, embarrassing, frightening, or overwhelming experiences with a child's brain and a child's understanding of the world. We don't yet have the perspective, experience, emotional tools, or problem-solving abilities we develop as adults. So we adapt. We may learn to hide, stay quiet, please people, avoid vulnerability, disconnect from our feelings, expect rejection, take responsibility for other people, or believe something painful about ourselves. Those responses may have helped us get through something then. But what protected us in childhood can become the very thing keeping us stuck in adulthood. When You Need Help Going Deeper Not every trauma response should be explored alone. If slowing down brings up overwhelming emotions, memories, body sensations, or experiences that are difficult to regulate, working with a qualified trauma therapist may help you explore what's underneath your reactions more safely. Trauma therapy can help you understand the connection between your current triggers and earlier experiences while developing healthier ways of responding in the present. You don't have to force yourself through something overwhelming in order to heal. Christian Trauma Therapy and EMDR Intensives in Pennsylvania If you keep wondering, "Why do I react this way when I know I'm safe?", there may be something underneath the reaction that needs attention. IN THIS EPISODE In this episode, Michelle shares a funny but surprisingly revealing story about a second-grade crush — and what happened when a friend exposed her secret. Her childhood solution? Hide. Deny the feelings. Don't let yourself be seen. It reduced the embarrassment in the moment, but it also prevented the very connection she actually wanted. That simple childhood story illustrates something much bigger: Children create ways of surviving situations they don't yet know how to handle. And sometimes we carry those same rules into adulthood without realizing it. Your rules might sound more like: Don't let people see the real me. Don't make anyone angry. I have to keep everyone happy. My feelings aren't important. I can't trust people. I have to handle everything myself. If someone is upset, I must have done something wrong. It's safer not to need anything. I have to be perfect to be accepted. I shouldn't be angry. I need to disappear when conflict happens. These patterns aren't necessarily who you are. They may be ways you learned to protect yourself. When Survival Patterns Stop Helping One of the most important questions Michelle asks in this episode is: What are you still living by that is now hurting you? Maybe a childhood response helped you survive rejection, criticism, emotional neglect, embarrassment, instability, betrayal, conflict, or another painful experience. You don't have to hate that response or shame yourself for developing it. Instead, you can begin asking: That helped me get here — but will it help me get where I want to go? Healing gives you the opportunity to understand where these patterns came from, process the experiences underneath them, and decide what you want to carry forward and what you are finally ready to leave behind. Can EMDR Help With Childhood Trauma? EMDR therapy can help people identify and process painful experiences, beliefs, triggers, and patterns that continue to affect them in the present. In her work with EMDR therapy intensives, Michelle helps clients explore the experiences connected to their current stuck points, process what still needs healing, and develop healthier ways of understanding themselves and responding in the present. You aren't a child anymore. Today, you can bring adult perspective, compassion, new experiences, new choices, and God's truth back to places where a younger version of you didn't have those resources. You get to decide: What do I want to keep — and what am I ready to let go of? In This Episode, You'll Learn Why childhood experiences can still affect you as an adult How childhood trauma can influence adult relationships and emotions Why children sometimes blame themselves for things they couldn't understand How protective childhood behaviors can become adult patterns Why shame and vulnerability can lead to hiding or avoidance How childhood beliefs can influence anxiety and overthinking Why understanding a pattern isn't always enough to change it How your nervous system can continue responding to old experiences How to recognize survival strategies that no longer serve you How trauma therapy can help you process childhood wounds How EMDR can address beliefs, triggers, memories, and stuck points How faith and evidence-based trauma therapy can work together How to approach your younger self with compassion rather than judgment How healing can help you respond from your adult self instead of an old wound Questions This Episode Answers Why is my childhood still affecting me? Childhood experiences can shape beliefs, emotional responses, relationship patterns, and protective behaviors before you have an adult's ability to understand what is happening. Why do I keep repeating childhood patterns? Some patterns began as ways of protecting yourself or maintaining safety and connection. Even when circumstances change, those learned responses can continue automatically. Can you heal childhood trauma as an adult? Yes. Healing can include understanding your patterns, processing unresolved experiences and emotions, developing new perspectives and learning healthier ways to respond in the present. Can EMDR help with childhood wounds? EMDR is one approach Michelle uses to help clients process experiences and beliefs connected to present-day triggers and stuck points. Can Christian faith and trauma therapy work together? They don't have to compete. Evidence-based trauma therapy can respect your Christian faith while helping you understand and address emotional wounds, nervous-system responses, beliefs, and patterns that continue to affect your life. Ready to Stop Letting the Past Run the Present? You may understand your childhood intellectually and still feel as though your mind, emotions, relationships, or body haven't gotten the message that you're safe to respond differently now. You don't have to keep living according to rules you developed when you were too young to know another way. Why Do I Rush Past My Feelings? Anxiety, Trauma Responses, and What Your Nervous System Is Trying to Tell You

Why Do I Rush Past My Feelings? Anxiety, Trauma Responses, and What Your Nervous System Is Trying to Tell You Do you find yourself rushing through uncomfortable feelings, talking faster when you're anxious, frantically trying to fix things, avoiding difficult emotions, or feeling like you just need to get past something as quickly as possible? There may be a reason. Sometimes what looks like rushing, perfectionism, avoidance, overreacting, shutting down, or trying to control everything around you can be an automatic survival response. Your nervous system may be responding to something happening today based on what it learned during an earlier experience. In this episode of Trauma Healing for Christian Women, Michelle Croyle, LPC, EMDR-Certified therapist, explains how slowing down and paying attention to your reactions can help you recognize what your nervous system may be trying to tell you. Why Do I Rush When I'm Anxious? When anxiety or a trigger hits, your nervous system may respond before your logical mind understands what's happening. You might notice yourself: Talking faster Moving faster Trying to fix everything Becoming unusually angry Feeling an urgent need to leave Avoiding uncomfortable feelings Becoming perfectionistic Shutting down or withdrawing Worrying about being judged Feeling like you're not good enough Instead of immediately asking, "How do I make this feeling stop?", it may help to become curious about why your system reacted in the first place. Could This Be a Trauma Response? Sometimes your reaction isn't only about what's happening now. Your nervous system may have learned a strategy during an earlier experience that helped you avoid rejection, criticism, embarrassment, abandonment, helplessness, or another painful experience. Maybe you learned to move faster. Maybe you tried to make everything perfect. Maybe you withdrew before someone could reject you. Maybe you learned to anticipate other people's reactions. Maybe you pushed uncomfortable emotions away so you wouldn't have to feel them. Those strategies may have served a purpose at one time. The problem comes when your nervous system continues using an old survival strategy in situations where the original threat no longer exists. Perfectionism Can Be About Safety Imagine someone is coming to your house and you suddenly feel frantic. You don't simply want to straighten up. You feel like you have to make everything perfect. What's underneath that urgency? What if someone sees how you really live? What if they judge you? What if they think you're a bad wife or mother? What if someone sees that you're not perfect? The intensity may be telling you something. Perfectionism isn't always about wanting things done well. Sometimes it can be connected to fear, criticism, rejection, vulnerability, or an old belief about what you need to do to be accepted. Why Do I Overreact to Small Things? If your emotional or physical reaction seems much bigger than the situation in front of you, consider whether something older may have been activated. You may notice: "This situation isn't actually dangerous, but my body feels like it is." That can be an important clue. A current experience can sometimes activate emotions, body sensations, beliefs, or survival responses connected to something that happened much earlier. Instead of criticizing yourself for your reaction, you can become curious about it. Slow Down and Notice When you notice yourself becoming frantic, tense, angry, avoidant, shut down, or unusually activated, slowing down may help you understand what's happening. If you feel safe enough to explore it on your own, you might ask: What am I feeling right now? What am I afraid will happen? What does this remind me of? When have I felt this way before? What am I telling myself right now? What do I believe I need to do to stay safe? Is that still true today? Sometimes slowing down allows you to see the connection between what you're doing now and what your nervous system learned to do years ago. Your Nervous System May Need New Information An old response doesn't have to remain your automatic response forever. Once you recognize the pattern, you may be able to give your nervous system a small experience that challenges the old expectation. Maybe you don't make the house perfect before your friend comes over. Maybe you stop studying once you know the material. Maybe you allow someone to see a little imperfection. Maybe you slow down instead of talking faster. Then you notice: I'm still okay. I wasn't rejected. Nobody attacked me. I didn't have to be perfect to be safe. Experiences like these can begin giving your brain and nervous system new information about what's safe now. Why Do I Feel Like I'm Not Good Enough? How Childhood Experiences, Trauma, and Your Nervous System Keep You Stuck

Why Do I Feel Like I'm Not Good Enough? How Childhood Experiences, Trauma, and Your Nervous System Keep You Stuck Why do you feel insecure or not good enough, even when you logically know you have value? Why do you compare yourself to other people, worry about what they think, or feel like everyone else has life figured out while you're somehow falling short? These feelings may not mean there is something wrong with you. They may make much more sense when you understand how childhood experiences, trauma, learned beliefs, and your nervous system can influence the way you see yourself today. In this episode of Trauma Healing for Christian Women, Michelle Croyle, LPC, EMDR-Certified therapist, explains how experiences from childhood can become beliefs and survival strategies that continue into adulthood—even when you no longer need them. You may intellectually know, "I am good enough," "I am safe," or "God gave me value," while another part of you still feels rejected, inadequate, unsafe, or afraid of what other people think. That disconnect can be an important clue. Why Do I Feel Like I'm Not Good Enough? Human beings naturally want connection, belonging, safety, and acceptance. When we are young, experiences involving criticism, rejection, comparison, achievement, belonging, or not having our emotional needs adequately met can influence the conclusions we make about ourselves. A child may conclude: "I'm not good enough." "I have to prove myself." "I need people to approve of me." "If someone is unhappy with me, I must have done something wrong." "I have to be the best to have value." "It isn't safe to disagree." "I need to fit in so I won't be rejected." Those conclusions can make sense to a child trying to understand the world. The problem comes when we're adults but our nervous systems are still responding according to rules we learned much earlier in life. In This Episode, You'll Learn Why you may constantly feel like you're not good enough Why comparing yourself to other people can be connected to safety and belonging How childhood experiences can create beliefs that follow you into adulthood Why criticism or rejection can feel disproportionately threatening How people-pleasing and needing approval can become survival strategies Why knowing something logically doesn't necessarily make you feel it emotionally How your nervous system can continue responding to an old threat after the danger has passed Why certain situations can suddenly make you feel like a child again How trauma therapy identifies the beliefs and experiences underneath current struggles How EMDR therapy can help you process experiences that continue to feel unresolved Why healing involves updating old information rather than simply trying harder to change your thoughts How Christian faith, emotional healing, and trauma therapy can work together Why Do Childhood Beliefs Still Affect Me as an Adult? Children interpret experiences with the information and developmental abilities they have at the time. If you weren't chosen for something, you might have concluded, "Nobody wants me." If you struggled academically, you might have concluded, "I'm dumb." If someone criticized something you were proud of, you might have concluded, "I shouldn't let people see what I'm good at." If belonging felt uncertain, you may have learned to watch other people's reactions closely so you could avoid rejection. Those beliefs and strategies may have helped you navigate life then. But what helped you survive at one point can sometimes keep you stuck later. Why Can I Know Something Is True but Still Not Feel It? This is one of the frustrating experiences people can have with unresolved trauma. You can intellectually know that you have value while still feeling inadequate. You can know that someone else's opinion doesn't determine your worth while still feeling intense anxiety when someone disapproves of you. You can know you're an adult while suddenly feeling very young, powerless, rejected, or frightened in a particular situation. The goal isn't simply to tell yourself to "think differently." Trauma therapy can help explore the discrepancy between what you know today and what your nervous system may still be responding to from an earlier experience. Your Survival Strategies Aren't Necessarily Your Current Reality Sometimes we continue living according to rules that once helped us feel safer: Keep everyone happy. Don't make mistakes. Don't stand out. Don't disagree. Prove yourself. Don't need anyone. Always perform. Always be prepared for rejection. Your nervous system may be trying to protect you using information that hasn't been updated for your present circumstances. Healing can involve understanding where those strategies came from, recognizing what your system has been trying to protect you from, and helping your mind and body take in new information. You survived. Now you can begin working on the things that may be keeping you in survival mode. Are You Spiritually Bypassing Your Feelings? When Christian Faith Is Used to Avoid Feelings, Trauma, and Real Healing

Spiritual Bypassing: When Christian Faith Is Used to Avoid Feelings, Trauma, and Real Healing What is spiritual bypassing, and how can it affect Christian women struggling with anxiety, trauma, grief, difficult emotions, or painful experiences? Sometimes well-meaning Christians respond to emotional pain with phrases like "count your blessings," "just have faith," "think positive," or "give it to God." Biblical truth matters—but using spiritual language to minimize, avoid, or shut down genuine emotional pain can keep us from addressing what is actually happening. In this episode of Trauma Healing for Christian Women, Michelle Croyle, LPC, EMDR-Certified therapist, explores spiritual bypassing in Christianity and why acknowledging painful emotions does not mean that you are failing spiritually or lacking faith. You can love God deeply and still experience anxiety, grief, anger, fear, hurt, exhaustion, or the effects of trauma. In This Episode, You'll Learn What spiritual bypassing is and what it can look like in Christian life How spiritual language can sometimes be used to minimize emotional pain Why experiencing anxiety or difficult emotions doesn't automatically mean you lack faith The difference between acknowledging your emotions and allowing your emotions to control you How trauma and a lack of felt safety can affect the nervous system Why "count your blessings" isn't always what a hurting person needs How spiritual bypassing can happen within relationships and church culture Why healthy boundaries and acknowledging when something hurt can be important How Christian faith and emotional honesty can exist together Why healing doesn't require pretending everything is fine Jesus did not ignore human suffering. He wept. He cared for people's physical and emotional needs. Throughout Scripture, we see people bringing grief, fear, pain, questions, and distress honestly before God. Faith doesn't require pretending. You can acknowledge, "This hurt me," "I'm grieving," "I'm angry," "I'm afraid," or "I need help," while still trusting God. Sometimes healing begins when we stop trying to put a spiritual bandage over a wound and allow ourselves to acknowledge what is actually there. About
