    Episode #112 - I'm New — Where Do I Start?

Thinking about getting into hammock camping but overwhelmed by all the gear and options? In this episode of the Hammock Hangers Podcast, we strip hammock camping down to the basics and talk about what you really need to get started. We break down the essential pieces of a hammock camping system—from choosing your first hammock and understanding suspension, to figuring out why insulation is so important and when you actually need a tarp or bug net. While there are seemingly endless accessories and upgrades available, the goal of this episode is to separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves. We discuss the basic hammock, tree-friendly suspension, tarp, bug protection, and the two sides of your sleep system: top insulation and bottom insulation. We also explain why simply climbing into a hammock with a sleeping bag isn't necessarily enough to keep you warm. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone who has been curious about making the switch from tent camping, this episode is designed to take away some of the confusion and help you understand where to start without feeling like you need to buy every piece of hammock gear on the market. So grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair—or better yet, a hammock—and join the Hammock Hangers Podcast as we answer the question: What do you REALLY need to start hammock camping? The goal isn't to convince you to buy more gear—it's to help you understand what each piece does and why you need it. Once you understand the basics, you can build a hammock camping system that fits your camping style, comfort needs, and budget. Because getting into hammock camping doesn't have to be complicated. Start with the basics, get out there, and hang!
