    No. 380: Roy Ivy

    Today’s guest is one I have been hoping to land for a couple of years now. He is interesting, to say the least. Roy Ivy is a fellow Gen Xer who grew up in Texas and traveled around the world in a band before making his way to the Mining City. That came after stops in Chicago, where he played music, wrote movie reviews  and took part in the improv scene, and Missoula. On Sept. 9, 2001, Roy traveled to New York City to visit his girlfriend. On the morning of Sept. 11, he got off at a Subway stop in Times Square to find out our nation was under attack. What he did after that ... well … you will have to listen to Roy describe it. His experience on that fateful day is unlike any you have ever heard before, and he sings about in one of his songs. You can hear that song in this episode. It is one of three he plays at the end. You can also see Roy’s only show of 2026 on Friday, Sept. 11 from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Helsinki Bar.     No. 379: Remembering 9/11 with Bernie Boyle and Shane Worley

    Next Friday will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. That day, Knights of Columbus Hall will hold a ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of that fateful day. A 3:30 p.m. ceremony will include a blessing from Rev. Tom Haffey and remarks from Chief Executive J.P. Gallager, Sheriff Ed Lester and Butte-Silver Bow firefighter Derek Harvey. The ceremony will be held at the memorial, which was unveiled in March of 2002 and includes a print of a painting by Butte artist Mike Hamblin. New York City firefighter Michael O’Hanlon and New York City police officer Thomas Patrick O’Riordan traveled to Butte for that ceremony. O’Hanlon passed away from 9/11-related cancer in 2017. Now, 25 years later, we will show that O’Hanlon and the rest of the heroes from 9/11 will never be forgotten with another service at the KC. Everyone has stories about 9/11.     Tap ’er Light: Here is one golfer you can trust

    Golf is an unfair game, which makes it a lot like life. Just when you think you are sitting pretty in the fairway, you can shank a shot that goes right into the lumber yard. Golf can also tell you everything you need to know about a person. If you see someone cheat at golf, you know that is a person you should stay the heck away from. Likewise, if someone shows off integrity in the game of golf, he or she will have integrity in the game of life.  And last week at the Great Falls Invitational, Butte High junior Jack Muhlestein showed that he has so much integrity that it is falling out of his pockets. If only more people could be like Jack. That is what today’s column is about.     No. 378: Meagan Thompson

    The past several years, Meagan Thompson of KXLF-TV has proven to be a fearless reporter who is not afraid to ask the tough questions. Last week, she took her camera into a homeless camp filled with potential danger to make sure she got all sides of a complicated story about a neighborhood fed up with transients, drugs and garbage. Meagan also brought to light the fight of Jamie Decker and Top Deck Medical Aesthetics to build a handicap ramp at the office across the street from the Courthouse when county leaders were saying they could not. Her coverage helped right a wrong right in front of our eyes. Meagan asked tough questions of the governor and other state and local officials when our water supply was exposed to possible contamination last summer. She was one of the first on the scene after the Owl Bar shooting last August, and she continues to cover the story of the alleged shooter, the victims and their families. You have seen her near the front lines of wildfires, reporting on the people impacted by the disasters. The thing you might not have known about Meagan, though, is that she never intended to be a television journalist. She graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in journalism, a camera and a love of art. That came after former Emerson Yellowjacket and Whittier Wildcat graduated from Butte High School, where she played soccer four seasons for the Bulldogs, in 2000. Meagan worked for five years as a staff photographer at a newspaper in Idaho before return to Butte to open a photography studio and then take a job as a photographer at The Montana Standard. When Lee Enterprises, which owns the paper, started forcing employees into unpaid furloughs, Meagan moved out of her comfort zone and got on the other side of the camera for KXLF. On Friday, I met with Meagan inside the Vault at the Metals Sports Bar & Grill for a fun conversation. Listen in as she talks about her long road to television reporting.     No 377: Tim Cronnelly

    Today’s guest was a teammate of Hall of Famers at Butte Central. He went on to a Hall of Fame career in his own right. He competed on a BC basketball team that placed fourth at the Class A State tournament in Missoula in March of 1982. He was also a high jumper on a Central boys’ track team that brought home the team tile from Missoula that May. After graduating from Montana State University, Tim Cronnelly then went onto a legendary career as a teacher, coach and activities director. In early August, Cronnelly was honored for his career with an induction in to the Idaho High School Activities Association Hall of Fame. The honor was in recognition of more than 35 years of dedication to education and interscholastic athletes. He built a legacy that was defined by leadership, service and commitment to students. That career began in Baker, Montana in 1987. It included stops in Idaho at Horseshoe Bend, Cascade, Lakeland and Timberlake. After his retirement in 2022, Tim continued to be part of the Idaho Athletic Administration Association and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. He is currently a part of an Idaho mentoring program aimed at training and retaining high school activities directors. Yesterday, I met with Tim over Zoom for a fun conversation.     Tap 'er Light: Do not blame these ‘Butte idiots’

    This column is not meant to trash congressional candidate Aaron Flint, even though I would never vote for him. It is not an endorsement of his opponent, Sam Forstang, either. I have never met Sam, and I have some questions for him. It is also not about whether the Montana Carpenters Union did the right thing by endorsing Flint, who has a history of pushing some pretty disgusting opinions on his radio show. Many of those opinions bashed unions, too. I am not a carpenter, so I will not try to tell the carpenters union what to do or how to vote. This is about a cheap shot at the Mining City, and I have a really hard time not punching back when people take a swing at my hometown. That is what today’s column is about.     No. 376: Cory Johnston

    He did not know it at the time, but one overtime loss turned out to be a very good thing for Cory Johnston. Johnston, a senior at Glasgow High School at the time, fell 1-0 to Danny Trujillo of Arlee in the 112-pound championship match of the Class B-C state wrestling tournament at the Billings Metra.  At the time, Johnston thought that was his last match. He could not, however, end his career like that. So, Johnston decided to wrestle at Dickinson State University, where he became an All-American. He also earned a degree that helped him become a math teacher and a coach. He coached in Glasgow, following the footsteps of his father, Mark. Then he coached at Ronan. This school year, Johnston will enter his 12th year as Butte High’s wrestling coach. He also recently added a new title. Johnston is the Bulldogs’ new head golf coach. After serving as an assistant to Eric Mankins for the past several years, Johnston moved up into the position when Mankins accepted a job as principal of Butte High’s Career Center. On Friday, I met with Cory at the Butte High coaches’ office for a fun conversation. Listen in as he talks about his deep Mining City roots, even though he grew up in Northeast Montana.  Listen as he talks about how he always knew his career path would take him to Butte.     No. 375: Kelvin Sampson

    There is probably no need for an introduction for today’s guest. You know who Kelvin Sampson is. Currently, the 70-year-old Sampson is the head coach of the University of Houston’s highly-successful men’s basketball program. He’s won multiple national Coach of the Year awards, and he took the Cougars to the Final Four in 2021 and 2025. He also took Oklahoma to the Final Four in 2002. He coached at Indiana, and he was an assistant for the Milwaukee Bucks and Houston Rockets in the NBA. Before all of that, though, Kelvin Sampson, as Jud Heathcote told him, took Montana Tech’s men’s basketball program from oblivion to obscurity. Of course, the immediate years following that phone call from the legendary Heathcote were the “Camelot Years” at Montana Tech. Extra seating had to be brought into the HPER Complex to accommodate all the people who wanted to watch Sampson’s high-flying Orediggers win the Frontier Conference title in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Next Saturday, Aug. 29, Coach Sampson will return to the Mining City to host a camp on Montana Tech’s Kelvin Sampson Court. Click here for more information and to register for that camp.
