I spent countless years searching, weeping, and whining to God about the lack of older women who might serve as a mentor for me. I was a young mom, raising 4 kids, divorced, without a clue as to how to live in Christ, manage my home, provide for the family, love my kids, and care for myself. I looked around my church for a woman I could emulate. I longed for someone I could look to for wisdom. I ached for an older woman to encourage me. I wanted someone approachable, someone who had weathered the storms of life and was sailing on to her brighter future. I looked for a ✝ Faith Filled woman ✝ A woman who spoke words of life to others ✝ A leader in the church or community ✝ A woman who was actively reaching out, offering hospitality to younger women ✝ A mom who was encouraging others in godliness ✝ An overcomer ✝ A confident woman ✝ A woman who loved her family well + A woman who worked outside of the home or had her own business I read in my Bible about this Titus 2 older woman; I had images of what that should look like in my life. But I found no one. After a few years of grumbling and complaining, and maybe even a temper tantrum or two, I began to ask God to make me the solution to the problem. At the age of 36, newly divorced and a hot mess, I began inviting college girls to coffee, lunch, or to our home for dinner. My personal journey of being a mentor had begun. Over the years, I have mentored, coached, and taught countless women. I have also had the privilege of meeting many exceptional women who walk in wisdom, insight, and integrity. (The mentors we all long for.)     Is There A Seat For Me At The Table with Morgan & Mom

    Mother-daughter conversation on faith and belonging: Morgan asks Misty if there's a seat for her at their Puerto Rico women's retreat. "Do you think it will be okay if I... like..." Morgan asked me that halfway through our conversation. And I didn't see it coming.  Last week we told you about Rooted & Reaching... seven women, five days, a house on the beach in Puerto Rico this January. This week we talk about WHY. Why Puerto Rico (it's where Morgan and I found our way back to each other). Why the table. Why seven women instead of a conference room full. Morgan is coming to cook and to teach yoga in the mornings. And then she asked the honest question... would there really be room for her at that table? Would it be "Jesus light"... or "Jesus heavy"? Would she get to be a participant, or just an observer? We didn't rush past it. We stayed right there with it, a little tender and very honest, until we both found our way to something true. We also talk about the strengths work on day one, long hours by the pool, a little rappelling 😉, Morgan turning 40, and why everybody in Puerto Rico claps when the plane lands. 🌊 And we talk about why this matters so much to us.     Hard Sh*t and Hope With Morgan & Mom

    Mother-daughter conversation on involuntary change: Misty and Morgan both divorced at 36. What kept them standing and the hope they found on the other side. "Wait... did we get divorced at the same age?" 36. Both of us. And neither of us had ever put that together until the mic was on. 🎙️ This week on Morgan & Mom, we talk about the change we never chose... the marriage that ends, the plan that falls apart, the future that disappears overnight. Morgan's first instinct was to change EVERYTHING else (quit the job, sell the house, start over somewhere new) just to feel some control again. Instead, she made herself a rule: don't change anything that isn't already changing. And she stayed. I was on my bedroom floor asking one question... what is still solid? The answer was Jesus. And "I'm a mom. I'll get up tomorrow and still be a mom." We talk about what kept each of us standing: a 12-week yoga teacher training that started the week Morgan's marriage ended, flower beds I dug by hand while praying "Lord, make something beautiful," and yes... good coffee and good hair product. ☕ Then the conversation turns. What if unchosen change is an invitation to discover who we really are? Morgan shares the postcard she kept for years ("Leap and the net will appear"), and I share the words Jesus spoke to my heart in one of my darkest seasons: "As deep as the pain goes, my joy goes even deeper." 🌱 We didn't solve the world's problems.     Loneliness Is Like Hunger with Morgan & Mom

    Why do I feel lonely when my life is full of people? Morgan asks her mom — and lands somewhere neither of them expected. An honest mother-daughter talk. Morgan called it "the lighthearted topic of loneliness." She was joking. Then she asked the question anyway.  She has a job she loves. Friendships going back fourteen years. Neighbors who feed her dog without being asked. She cooks for people at her house four times a week. And she still feels lonely, often — and it still feels bad. So she brought it to her mom. Misty was single for twenty-two years after her divorce and didn't live alone until she was fifty, so she has her own version of the question. What neither of them expected was for Morgan to talk her way into an answer partway through — a metaphor about hunger that reframed the whole thing. For both of them. ❌ There's no five-step plan here. ❌ No verse tacked on at the end. 💖 Just a mother and a daughter in a small warm room, going after something that keeps them both up at night, and finding their way to hope instead of fear.     Bright, Sweet, And Mildly Nutty with Morgan & Mom

    Morgan tells her whole story in one sitting — India, an unexpected divorce, a fast career rise, and how she kept choosing herself along the way. 👏🏽 "Ready? One, two, three, clap." That's how this one starts — because that's how we start every recording. This week, it's just Morgan, telling her whole story, start to finish, in her own words. She gave herself ten minutes. It took forty. 😄 She takes us through a barefoot, sun-and-sweat childhood in small-town Kentucky. A move to Kansas City at fifteen. A year in India at eighteen that she'll tell you, emphatically, was not a "missionary trip" — she went to live with people, not save them. A community college scholarship, her face on a city bus, and the kind of confidence that only shows up after you've been tested a few times. 📖 One chapter of her story is a relationship in India that nearly cost her everything, and a decision — with someone else's help — to choose herself instead. It's one of the harder parts of this episode. It's also just one part of a much bigger one. From there: grad school, a marriage, a career that went from an entry-level nonprofit job to VP of HR at a fast-growing company, and a divorce that came out of nowhere — one she handled entirely on her own terms.     Looking My Daughter In The Eye

    Misty looks her daughter in the eye and says the words she's owed her for years: I'm sorry. A real apology — not a lesson, not polished. For a wound she didn't know was there. ❤️‍🩹 Last week, Morgan told her me something I hadn't let herself fully sit with. I asked for a week before responding — I didn't want to rush past it. ▶︎ •၊၊||၊|။|||| | This episode is that week. In the little 4 X 4 podcast cubicle,  I take a moment to look my daughter in the eye and tell the words she's owed her for a long time: I'm sorry. Not a general apology — a specific one, for something that cost Morgan real time and real closeness with her dad. 🤍 What comes back isn't what you'd expect. Morgan talks about the difference between a hurt that's twenty years old and one that's still fresh — "that cake is baked," she says — and how she's already grieved it, already made her peace, without pretending it didn't cost her anything. Then there's the story behind a piece of hand-stitched fabric a much younger Morgan made for her mom — misspelled and all — that's been a family joke for twenty years. Except it was never really a joke. It's part of why the two of them can have a conversation like this one at all. 🤎🍪🔗 They close the way they've been closing lately — with something true, a little levity, and the promise of a cookie.  Mother-daughter relationships.     What's It Like Growing Up In A Single Parent Family with Morgan & Mom

    Misty and her daughter Morgan talk honestly about growing up in a single-parent home — what it took, what it cost, and what's still unfinished.  Morgan is 39 now. She was 11 or 12 when her parents divorced — one of four kids growing up in what was, at the time, a pretty unusual thing among the families around her. In this episode, she and Misty sit down and just talk about it. What it was actually like. What's different about how divorce and single parenting look today versus 25 years ago. What nobody really explained to her as a kid. What she's learned...AND What is still very hard.  This isn't a teaching episode. It's Misty and Morgan, on mic instead of on the phone, having the kind of conversation they've been having for years — the real one, not the polished one.  ⚡ Somewhere in the middle of it, something shifted. Misty found herself sitting in real sorrow about what her kids went through — not trying to fix it, not explaining it away. And Morgan, on the other side of that, admitted it made her uncomfortable to watch. -ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈ That's where this episode ends — not because the conversation was over, but because it wasn't.     A Hopeful Conversation with Morgan & Mom

    Misty and her daughter Morgan sit down for their first-ever episode — nervous, honest, and hopeful. A real mother-daughter conversation, unscripted. "Okay, we're actually doing this. Three, two, one, GO." That's how it starts — and if you listen closely, you can hear exactly how nervous we both were. This is the very first Morgan & Mom episode. ❌ No framework, ❌ no three steps, ❌ no takeaway at the end — just a mother and a daughter, in a room together, talking the way we already talk on the phone every week. Except this time, you get to listen in. We spent the first few minutes just naming what we were nervous about — the technology, being honest on tape, the things we haven't said out loud yet.
