The Damsel of Death – Serial Killer Aileen Wuornos

In this episode of Super SUS, we dig into the life and crimes of Aileen Wuornos, often called the “Damsel of Death” Wuornos was a serial killer who murdered seven men in Florida between 1989 and 1990, later being convicted of six of those killings. We walk through Aileen’s deeply unstable childhood, marked by abandonment, abuse, and early exposure to violence, and how those experiences shaped her adult life, including her years surviving through sex work. Aileen claimed the murders were acts of self-defense against violent clients, a claim that remains heavily debated and complicated by evidence, witness accounts, and her own changing statements. We examine the investigation, her highly publicized trial, and the role of Tyria Moore, her longtime partner, whose cooperation with law enforcement ultimately led to Aileen’s arrest and conviction. Along the way, we grapple with the bigger question at the heart of this case: was Aileen Wuornos a calculated predator, or the tragic product of years of trauma, neglect, and systemic failure?
