The Business of Immigration and ICE | Enchantments of Mammon Ep. 8

Capitalism has a long and ugly history of scapegoating and exploiting immigrants. From British capitalists exploiting Irish people to the United States’ deeply systemic and oppressive tactics, immigrants have, for a long time, been useful game pieces for greedy trans-national capitalists. Today we will be digging into the history of immigration, mostly American migration policies, as well as ICE and predictive policing through AI mass surveillance. And be sure to check out: “The Black Panther” newspaper is back in print after three decades. This was the official publication of the Black Panther Party which ran for 13 years between 1967 and 1980, producing a total of 537 issues. Printing stopped after the FBI, through COINTELPRO, dismantled the organization through intimidation, conspiracy, and violence. To know how much this newspaper is a part of the rich history of the Black Panthers, this reboot is sure to be another marker in that history. If you don’t know much about the Panthers, they’ve got some great articles that’ll help you out. Exploiting Women in the Patriarchal Capitalist Machine | Enchantments of Mammon Ep. 7

This is part 7 of the Enchantments of Mammon series. Capitalism needs a permanent source of unpaid labor. Childbearing, child raising, cooking, cleaning, caregiving, emotional support. The invisible work that keeps society functioning. So patriarchy created an ideology and way to frame femininity through sexism: that being that women are naturally nurturing, women belong in the home, women don't have any need outside of their homely duties. Capitalism has long depended on women's unpaid labor and role in the home to succeed. Anyone critical of capitalism needs to understand the intersectionality of the way that capitalism specifically exploits women and people of color. You can't fix one without addressing the other. Liberation isn't a single issue project. When systems are built in tandem, we have to dismantle them together. The Racism of For-Profit Capitalist Exploitation | Enchantments of Mammon Ep. 6

Marx’s analysis does not specifically take into account the history of the exploitation of women and non-white people. We will be digging into some of the ways that racism, sexism, and xenophobia play into the perpetuation of capitalism. Today we look at racism as we venture into the Haiti Revolution, Slavery, and the 13th Amendment's loophole allowing modern-day slavery to occur. Join us in part 6 of this Enchantments of Mammon series: The Racism of For-Profit Capitalist Exploitation. Biblical Anti-Imperialism | Enchantments of Mammon Ep. 1

If you've ever read the Bible you would quickly realize that there are plenty of stories in which systems are portrayed with the “have’s” and “have nots,” where some have autonomy while others don’t, and where laborers are exploited and stolen from due to a narcissistic greed to accumulate more at the expense of others. Think the Egyptians and Israelites, or perhaps Jesus's parables like that of the Talents (Matthew 25). Let's see what the Bible can illuminate when it comes to resisting empire.
