Why Going Low Contact Is So Hard: The Guilt of Distancing Yourself From Your Mother

Why is going low contact so hard, even when you know the relationship with your mother is hurting you? You may finally create the distance you've needed for years, only to find yourself overwhelmed with guilt, sadness, anxiety, and the fear that you're being a bad daughter. In this episode of The Mother Wound Project, we're talking about why going low contact with an emotionally immature, narcissistic, critical, or emotionally unavailable mother can be so difficult. Going low contact isn't simply about making fewer phone calls. It can mean breaking deeply ingrained “good daughter” rules about family loyalty, forgiveness, obligation, and your responsibility for your mother's emotions. And when Mom, siblings, or extended family push back, that guilt can become even stronger. We'll talk about what low contact can actually look like, family pressure and flying monkeys, why feeling guilty doesn't necessarily mean you're doing something wrong, and how to stop abandoning yourself just to keep everyone else comfortable. I also share my own experience of reducing contact with my mother, the guilt I once carried around that decision, and the realization that ultimately changed everything for me: My mother had choices in our relationship too. You don't have to hate your mother to need distance from her. You don't have to convince your family that your boundaries are justified. And you don't need to prove that you've suffered enough to deserve relationships built on mutual respect. Sometimes healing means allowing the relationship to be what it actually is instead of continually sacrificing yourself trying to make it what you wish it could be. If you've been searching for ways to go low contact with your mother, how to deal with guilt after going low contact, boundaries with a narcissistic mother, emotionally immature parents, toxic family relationships, or how to distance yourself from your mother, this episode is for you. You are allowed to ask: What level of contact allows me to have this relationship without losing myself?

Ways to Stop Criticizing Yourself: When Your Mother’s Critical Voice Becomes Your Own

Looking for ways to stop criticizing yourself and quiet the constant negative voice in your head? If you grew up with an emotionally immature, highly critical, or narcissistic mother, that inner critic may not have started with you. Maybe you constantly question your decisions, criticize your appearance, replay your mistakes, dismiss your accomplishments, or tell yourself you're stupid, lazy, too sensitive, or simply not good enough. You may think you're just hard on yourself. But what if you learned to speak to yourself this way? In this episode of The Mother Wound Project, we're exploring how a mother's constant criticism can eventually become your own inner voice and, more importantly, practical ways to stop criticizing yourself and begin changing that internal dialogue. We'll talk about subtle forms of maternal criticism that are often disguised as advice or concern, why you may have learned to criticize yourself before anyone else gets the chance, and how to catch a critical thought, question whether it's actually true, and replace it with something healthier and more accurate. We'll also talk about what to do when your mother still criticizes you as an adult, including simple responses that don't require defending, explaining, or proving your choices. Because healing your inner critic isn't about pretending you're perfect or refusing to take responsibility when you make a mistake. It's learning the difference between: “I made a mistake” and “There's something wrong with me.” Your mother's voice may have helped shape the story you learned about yourself. But she doesn't get to narrate the rest of it.

3 Ways to Stop People Pleasing: How to Say No Without Feeling Guilty

3 ways to stop people pleasing when saying no makes you feel guilty, selfish, or anxious? If you grew up with an emotionally immature, narcissistic, controlling, or emotionally unavailable mother, people pleasing may be much more than caring what other people think. You may have learned from childhood that keeping other people happy was how you kept relationships safe. When Mom was upset, you fixed it. When she was disappointed, you changed your behavior. When someone was angry with you, you assumed you had done something wrong. And now, as an adult, you may find yourself saying yes when you desperately want to say no, overexplaining your decisions, putting everyone else's needs before your own, and feeling intense guilt whenever someone is disappointed in you. In this episode of The Mother Wound Project, we're talking about 3 ways to stop people pleasing and start saying no without guilt. You'll learn how to stop overexplaining your boundaries, why pausing before answering requests can help break the automatic people-pleasing response, and how to let other people feel disappointed without making their emotions your responsibility. We'll also talk about what to say when someone refuses to accept your no, including responses to guilt trips like: "After everything I've done for you..." "You're being selfish." "Can't you just do this one thing?" Because learning how to stop people pleasing isn't about becoming cold, selfish, or uncaring. It's about recognizing that your needs belong in the relationship too. And sometimes one of the biggest parts of healing the mother wound is learning: Someone else's disappointment is not an emergency. If you're struggling with people pleasing, boundary guilt, saying no, overexplaining, an emotionally immature mother, narcissistic mother dynamics, or constantly feeling responsible for other people's emotions, this episode will help you begin breaking the pattern.

Is Your Mother Gaslighting You? 6 Phrases to Recognize and How to Respond

Have you ever walked away from a conversation with your mother knowing exactly what happened... only to somehow end up questioning your own memory? Maybe you've heard: "That never happened." "I never said that." "You're too sensitive." "You're overreacting." "I guess I'm just a terrible mother then." "Why are you bringing this up again?" In this episode of The Mother Wound Project, we're talking about gaslighting from emotionally immature and narcissistic mothers, why it can leave you confused and doubting yourself, and how to stop getting pulled into the endless cycle of explaining, defending, and trying to prove your reality. I share some of my own experiences with gaslighting, including what happened after I left the religion I grew up in and watched a painful conversation later get completely denied and rewritten. We'll also talk about JADE: Justify, Argue, Defend, and Explain, and why trying harder to make someone understand you can actually keep you trapped in the manipulation loop. Instead, you'll learn simple responses for phrases like "That never happened," "You're too sensitive," and "I guess I'm just a terrible mother," along with ways to set boundaries and disengage from circular conversations. Because healing from the mother wound isn't about becoming better at arguing your case. It's about learning to trust yourself again. When Family Isn’t About Love, It’s About Obligation

When Family Isn’t About Love, It’s About Obligation What happens when “family is everything” really means you’re expected to tolerate anything? For many daughters of emotionally immature, narcissistic, or controlling mothers, family relationships aren’t built around mutual respect. They’re built around obligation, guilt, loyalty, and an unspoken expectation that you will continue showing up no matter how you’re treated. In this episode of The Mother Wound Project, we’re unpacking the difference between genuine family love and relationships held together by obligation. We’ll talk about why saying no can trigger so much guilt, why setting boundaries can suddenly make you the problem, and how childhood conditioning teaches us that keeping the peace is safer than speaking the truth. You’ll also learn how to recognize the signs of an obligation-based family system, what healthy family relationships actually look like, and why healing doesn’t necessarily mean cutting everyone off. Sometimes it means limiting contact, reducing emotional access, attending fewer gatherings, setting stronger boundaries, and finally giving yourself permission to stop over-explaining your choices. Because love should not require self-abandonment. You should not have to silence yourself, tolerate mistreatment, or sacrifice your emotional well-being just to prove that you love your family. Why I Keep Falling for My Emotionally Immature Mother's "I've Changed" Promise

Why do we keep believing our emotionally immature mothers when they say, "I've changed"? If you've ever gone low contact with your mom, only to be pulled back in by promises of change, love bombing, or emotional conversations that seem to offer hope, this episode is for you. In this episode of The Mother Wound Project Podcast, we're exploring the painful cycle so many daughters experience with emotionally immature and covert narcissistic mothers: distance, promises of change, renewed hope, and the heartbreaking realization that nothing has really changed. We'll talk about: • Why daughters keep giving their mothers another chance • The psychology of attachment and intermittent reinforcement • The difference between performing love and showing love • Why words without accountability don't rebuild trust • What genuine repair actually looks like • How to recognize the difference between promises and patterns Through personal stories about adoption, caregiving, family crises, and rebuilding trust, I share one of the most important lessons I've learned: Love isn't measured by what someone says. It's revealed by how they consistently show up when it matters most. If you've ever found yourself asking: "Why do I keep hoping she'll change?" This episode is for you. Ready to Go Deeper? Low Self-Worth: How Your Mom’s Voice Became Your Inner Critic

Many women struggle with low self-worth, overthinking, people-pleasing, and constant self-doubt, but few realize where that inner voice actually came from. What if the voice telling you you’re too sensitive… too much… or not enough… isn’t even yours? In this episode, we unpack how a mother’s emotional patterns become the inner critic many women carry into adulthood. Whether your mother was emotionally dismissive, subtly competitive, or openly critical, the messages you absorbed as a child can shape your identity, confidence, and nervous system responses for decades. You’ll learn how children internalize beliefs about their worth through parental reflection, why many women unknowingly carry borrowed beliefs about themselves, and how these patterns show up in adulthood through rumination, anxiety, perfectionism, and difficulty setting boundaries. Different behaviors. Same result: an internalized voice that questions your worth and keeps you playing small. If you’ve ever found yourself replaying conversations for hours, apologizing for your needs, second-guessing decisions, or feeling guilty for simply existing, this episode will help you understand why those patterns formed and how to begin separating your identity from that inherited voice. Inside this episode you’ll discover: • Why low self-worth is often learned, not inherent • How children internalize criticism as identity • The psychology behind “borrowed beliefs” • Why your inner critic feels protective but keeps you stuck • Three practical tools to begin rewiring the pattern This conversation is for women who want to stop living under the voice that trained them to doubt themselves and start reclaiming their confidence, boundaries, and sense of worth.
