58: Why ADHD Coaching Works Best as a Partnership, Not a Prescription

SHOW SUMMARY: ADHD coaching is more practical, powerful, and life-changing than most parents realize If you have ever wondered whether ADHD coaching could help you or your child, this conversation with Julie Gates breaks down exactly what it is, who it helps most, and how to tell whether it is the right next step. You will come away with a much clearer picture of how coaching works, how it differs from therapy, and what to look for when choosing a coach. Julie is an ADHD family coach, professional certified coach, and former physician assistant who brings both clinical experience and deep family insight to the work. She shares how her own parenting journey led her into ADHD coaching, why the right training matters, and how coaching creates a collaborative, future-focused space where clients build real-world tools instead of just talking about what went wrong. You’ll discover: The difference between ADHD coaching and therapy, and when each may be the better fit What legitimate ADHD coach training should include, including ICF-certified coach training and ADHD-specific education How coaching works with adults, teens, parents, and entire families Why weekly sessions and client-chosen homework make progress more likely to stick How mindfulness can be adapted for ADHD brains in small, realistic ways Where to find a qualified coach through directories like CHADD and the ADHD Coaches Organization This episode also gets into the emotional side of ADHD support, including the shame, frustration, and self-doubt so many families carry before they find the right help. Julie explains how coaching can help people shift from “something is wrong with me” to “my brain works differently, and I have strengths that matter.” Essential listening for parents, teens, and adults who want practical ADHD support without feeling talked down to. If you have been looking for a coach, wondering whether your family needs therapy instead, or just trying to understand what ADHD coaching actually looks like, this episode gives you a clear, hopeful place to start. 56: College is not grade 13-What Parents need to know

SHOW SUMMARY: Preparing a teen for college can feel overwhelming, especially when ADHD or other disabilities are part of the picture. In this conversation, Elizabeth Hamblet—learning disability specialist and author of Seven Steps to College Success: A Pathway for Students with Disabilities—shares practical, reassuring guidance for families navigating the transition from high school to college. Elizabeth explains why college is not “grade 13,” and why students need more than strong grades to thrive. She breaks down the major differences between high school and college disability support, including why many accommodations that are common in high school do not automatically transfer to college. From self-advocacy to executive functioning, from deadlines to disclosure, she offers a realistic look at what students need in order to build confidence and independence. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why “competence builds confidence” How to gradually reduce adult-directed supports in high school The difference between access in college and success-focused supports in K–12 Why productive struggle matters for growth Which accommodations often do not carry over to college How students can practice self-advocacy before the transition What families should consider when choosing a college Why admission and disability services are separate processes When and how to think about disclosing a disability Elizabeth also shares why parents should take the long view and help teens build the skills they’ll need before leaving home, including organization, emotional regulation, decision-making, and asking for help. If you’re a parent, clinician, or student preparing for college, this episode is packed with honest insight and encouragement. Key takeaways College accommodations are about access, not guaranteeing success. Students grow when they’re allowed to struggle productively. The earlier families start preparing, the smoother the transition can be. Self-determination and self-advocacy are essential life skills. The best college fit is about more than disability services alone.   SHOW NOTES: Make sure to follow us on social media (Instagram) @ADHDMomDocs you can send us a DM with a question or suggestions for future episodes! 55: 7 ADHD Medication Myths That Could Be Holding Your Child Back

SHOW SUMMARY: We're back! We are so excited to welcome listeners back for Season 2! Season two opens with Dr. Nerissa Bauer and Dr. Jennifer Dilts tackling common myths about ADHD medication. They use clinic experience and research to separate fear from fact, while reminding families that these decisions should always be made with a child’s pediatrician or prescriber. The episode is especially helpful for parents who are unsure about starting medication, or who have heard conflicting things from social media, family, or friends. Key topics In this episode, Dr. Bauer and Dr. Dilts explain why misinformation about ADHD medication spreads so easily, and why social media claims should be checked against a trusted medical source. They introduce a four-part members-only mini-series, Getting Ready to Launch, focused on helping families prepare kids for college and independence. The hosts challenge the myth that ADHD meds do not work by explaining that families often need more than one trial, the right formulation, and enough time to see a real trend. They discuss how common side effects can often be monitored, adjusted for, or managed through dose changes, timing changes, food strategies, or switching formulations. They address appetite and weight concerns, noting that mild appetite suppression can happen, but growth and weight should be monitored closely at every visit. They clarify that ADHD medication does not increase the risk of substance abuse, and may actually reduce later risk by improving symptom control and lowering impulsive, risky behavior. They explain that children who cannot swallow pills still have multiple medication options, including liquids, chewables, dissolvable tablets, capsules that can be opened and sprinkled, and patches. They review what is known about long-term ADHD medication safety, including the long-standing research base and the importance of weighing medication benefits against the harms of untreated ADHD. They push back on the idea that medication prevents skill-building, emphasizing that medication and behavioral support work best together. They reassure parents that starting medication is not a lifelong commitment, and that treatment can always be revisited, adjusted, or stopped based on feedback and needs. Notable quotes “Treating ADHD with medication reduces the risk of substance abuse.” “Pills don’t teach skills, but we need both.” “It’s just one tool in the toolbox.” SHOW NOTES: Make sure to follow us on social media (Instagram) @ADHDMomDocs you can send us a DM with a question or suggestions for future episodes!
