#62 - Changing It Up with Lauren McLaughlin

What if the thing you’re most ashamed of is exactly what God wants to use? Today, Lauren McLaughlin, inventor and founder of Change Up Kids, shares how God took her deepest brokenness and turned it into a calling to protect children. Abused at 12 and addicted to drugs by 18, she feared God was done with her. One phone call to her mom changed everything: “It’s grace that wins.” Lauren opens up about the campus encounter that started her journey back to Jesus, the four years and four prototypes it took to bring her product to life, and why she kept going every time she wanted to quit. She also shares why the church sometimes pushes away the people who need it most, and why doubt and unbelief are not the same thing. If you’ve ever felt too far gone, or felt God asking you to do something that makes no sense, this one is for you. In this episode: 1 - How shame kept Lauren silent and pulled her away from God 2 - The question that brought her back: “How far is too far gone?” 3 - What obedience looks like when the prototype literally falls over 4 - The power of prayers you never knew were being prayed for you 5 - Why God welcomes our questions, any of them and all of them Chapters 00:00 Welcome Lauren 01:43 Lauren’s story 04:33 How Change Up Kids started 07:07 Four prototypes 11:23 Obedience is hard 12:43 Trauma and addiction 19:20 Finding her way back 22:27 Too far gone? 25:20 Unseen prayer 28:45 Growing the business 38:15 When the church overlooks people 42:57 Beauty from ashes 43:43 Room at the table Holiday Gift Discount Use code TABLE20 at changeupkids.com (expires 12/20/26). #59 - From Buddha to Christ with Jonnathan Truong

What if the person everyone called a living Buddha was the one who needed saving most? Jonnathan Zin Truong grew up in Houston as the son of Chinese immigrants from Vietnam, raised in a devout Buddhist home where monks, temple leaders, and eventually the Dalai Lama himself told his family he was the reincarnation of a Tibetan Lama. By 10 years old he was meditating for hours a day, being trained in astral projection and occult practices, and treated like a spiritual authority by grown adults. But behind all the “gifts” was a boy living with abuse at home, being used for what he could do, and slowly falling apart. By 23 he was depressed, numbing everything with drugs, alcohol, and women, and ready to end his life. Then he cried out to a God he didn’t even believe in, and the doorbell rang. In this conversation they cover: - Growing up with a tiger mom and an absent father, and how Buddhist temples began calling him a reincarnated Lama - Meeting the Dalai Lama as a child and turning down the invitation to be raised in a temple - How Tibetan Buddhism and the occult blended together, and where ideas like “Christ consciousness” and the third eye come from - Why years of meditation and spiritual power left him with no peace at all - The night he prayed to an unknown God and two Mormon missionaries showed up at his door - Reading the Gospels, leading Mormon missionaries to the real Jesus, and praying for the sick in an ER as a brand new believer - Building a marketing firm, planting God Manifest church, and why he believes God uses the broken and disqualified 📌 Jonnathan’s Website: www.godmanifest.com 📌 Books: https://godmanifestpublishing.com/jonnathan-zin-truong/ 📌 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegodmanifest/ 📌 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegodmanifest 📌 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@GodManifest 📌 X: @thegodmanifest 📌 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/god-manifest-church/ Connect with Kimberly Milo Website: https://roomatthetableforyou.com/ Email: roomatthetableforyou@gmail.com If Jonnathan’s story moved you, subscribe, share this episode with someone who feels too far gone, and leave a rating or review so more people can find the show. #58 - A Man Who Cares with Harry Robinson

What would change if the young men in your life actually believed someone was in their corner? This week Kimberly sits down with Harry Robinson, pastoral counselor, ordained pastor, and president of Pillars Counseling, for a conversation about why so many young men don't need fixing. They need someone who sees them. Harry grew up the oldest son of a minister, spent years in marketing and business development at Armor All and Gateway, and learned to wait on God through layoff after layoff before stepping into a call to ministry he honestly didn't want. Today he cooks dinner for a group of young men every Wednesday night, has walked with some of them for over a decade, and is training other men to do the same through a mentor certification built on what he calls being "a man who cares." This episode is for anyone with a young man in their life who needs someone in his corner, and for the men who could be that person. In this conversation they cover: - The moment alone in the desert at 10 years old that set the direction of Harry's life - A jet ski ride in Dana Point Harbor that showed him how many young men don't feel like they belong - Why working in an adolescent hospital turned him away from becoming a psychologist - Learning to wait on God through 10 company reorganizations, a layoff, and a year without work - How God provided his pastor's salary in a way nobody saw coming - The CARES framework: courage, action, responsibility, endurance, and submission - What resisting passivity has to do with the overflowing kitchen trash can - Rites of passage with his own kids and the 31-day Proverbs study that became a curriculum - The difference between a regular mentor and a godly one - How men in the church can use their real life experience to disciple the next generation - Holding grief and hope in the same heart - Why every man needs a team 📌 Pillars Counseling (mentoring, counseling & mentor certification): https://pillarscounseling.com 📌 Harry's links Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pillarscounseling Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pillarscounseling LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/harry-robinson-pillars X: https://x.com/HarryatPillars 📌 Connect with Kimberly Email: Roomatthetableforyou@gmail.com 📌 The Heart Posture Collective → https://theheartposturecollective.com/?via=kimberly The Heart Posture Collective is an online community built by James and Trisha Fenimore (Christian Speakers, Authors, Ministry partners, and Mentors) that focuses on helping believers live their faith, not just show up at church on Sunday. #57 - The God of Productivity Megan Estes

Has productivity quietly become your god, and do you actually trust that God's math works if you stop for a day? This week Kimberly sits down with Megan Estes, a homeschool mom of four, author, speaker, and host of the Only Love Today podcast, for an honest conversation about rest in a culture that runs on busy. Megan grew up as a pastor's kid and a self-described recovering perfectionist, and for most of her life Sabbath meant a list of things she wasn't allowed to do. Over the past year that changed. She started treating Sabbath as a gift from God that has to be planned, protected, and put on the calendar, and it has reshaped her faith, her family, and even how she thinks about her work. This episode is an invitation to stop striving like everything depends on you and to start with rest the way God designed. In this conversation they cover: - Why Megan believes productivity is the god of our culture and why Sabbath requires real trust - How her view of Sabbath shifted from a set of rules to a gift you plan for - What Sabbath looks like in her home, from Friday night chores and pizza to a Saturday with nothing on the schedule but rest - Writing down what drains you and what brings you peace, and starting with just four protected hours - Why Adam's first full day was a day of rest, and what that says about resting before we work - Anxiety as the canary in the coal mine and what it's trying to tell us - The difference between a fast and a Sabbath - What happened when she stepped away from social media for a summer and stopped grinding - Why so many of us avoid being alone with our own thoughts - Her encouragement for moms carrying secret shame: growth in Christ is measured by how quickly you get back up 📌 Megan's links Megan's Website: https://www.onlylovetoday.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/onlylovetodaymom/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/megan.estes.73 Only Love Today Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/only-love-today-testimonies-and-resources-for/id1765891870 Hope for Christian Moms of Neurodivergent Children (devotional podcast): https://open.spotify.com/show/033Yb4HB1MGaqjt7guTxHL?si=610104d45f644de6 📌 Books mentioned The Nature of Rest: https://a.co/d/0fuaV5vp The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer: https://a.co/d/0jf8E0Ko 📌 Connect with Kimberly Email: Roomatthetableforyou@gmail.com Website: https://roomatthetableforyou.com/ 📌 The Heart Posture Collective → https://theheartposturecollective.com/?via=kimberly The Heart Posture Collective is an online community built by James and Trisha Fenimore (Christian Speakers, Authors, Ministry partners, and Mentors) that focuses on helping believers live their faith, not just show up at church on Sunday. #55 - Parenting Your Adult Child with Kathy Cunningham

What happens when your kids grow up and the parenting playbook that used to work just... stops working? For over 35 years Kathy Cunningham has served in ministry, walked alongside parents as a Christian counselor, and built her platform around a topic almost nobody else is teaching on directly: how to stay connected to your kids once they become adults. In this episode Kathy sits down with Kimberly to talk about the shift every parent eventually faces — from being the authority in the room to being an influence in someone else's life. She shares her own story, including 15 years walking through her son's addiction, a painful moment where she overstepped a boundary with her adult son at a family gathering, and what it actually looked like to repair it. This is an honest, practical conversation about parenting adult children without guilt, control, or losing the relationship in the process. In this conversation they cover: - Why so many parents feel completely unprepared once their kids become adults - How authority is meant to shift into influence as children grow up - Walking through 15 years of her son's addiction and what she learned from it - The moment she crossed a boundary with her adult son in front of family, and how she repaired it - What a healthy boundary actually looks like versus a punishment - Why parents are usually the ones who have to "go first" in making relational changes - The difference between authoritative parenting and truly listening to your kids - Why understanding each child's individual temperament changes everything - The three things every child, at any age, needs to hear from their parents How her prayer life for her kids changed once they became adults 📌 Connect with Kathy Cunningham Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kathycunningham717/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aseedofhope17 Website: kathycunningham.org 📌 Connect with Kimberly Email: Roomatthetableforyou@gmail.com If this episode spoke to you, subscribe to Room at the Table, share it with someone who needs to hear it, and leave a rating or review.
