Chasing the Vapor | Ep. 4

“What do you do for a living?” When you meet someone new, that’s usually one of the first questions, isn’t it? You might ask where they’re from or what their family is like, but chances are the conversation is quickly going to turn to their occupation. Yet, there’s a terrible implication hiding behind that question. We’re assuming that what we do for work is what makes our life. Just asking the question in that way shows how we’ve blurred the line between our work and our identity. In our minds, work isn’t about improving the lives of others; it’s about proving my own value and worth in this world. The teacher of Ecclesiastes wants to help us put work in its proper place. On the one hand, he elevates work. He reminds us that vocation isn’t just about career – it’s about calling! God has created us and commanded us to do work in this world. Work isn’t about making a living or even building a life. It’s about leveraging who we were created to be in order to do the work God created us to do. Join SE Online for CHASING THE VAPOR - a six-week study through the book of Ecclesiastes. Though often overlooked, Ecclesiastes teaches some lessons we desperately need in our day and age. We need to know how to handle our time. We need to know how to enjoy ourselves. We need to know how to live in right relationships. Most importantly, we need to know how to live life to the fullest.
