Questioning What’s Possible: Hope, Health Foundations, and Stroke Recovery with Tristan Gibson

What can help you remain open to possibility when stroke recovery feels stalled or someone has told you not to expect further progress? In this episode of Brain Health & Healing, Sandra Lee talks with Tristan Gibson about his experience of surviving multiple brain surgeries and a brainstem stroke that dramatically changed his physical abilities, memory, mental health, and sense of what his future might hold. Tristan shares what it was like to regain basic function, later be told he was unlikely to make additional progress, and eventually begin questioning some of the assumptions he had accepted about his recovery. Their conversation explores hope, neuroplasticity, BDNF, and the foundational role Tristan believes nutrition, movement, sleep, mindset, and relationships have played in his own life. He also reflects on a deeply personal shift from asking “Why me?” to considering “Why not me?”—a question that changed the way he viewed his experience. Throughout the conversation, Sandra brings the focus back to possibility, curiosity, and the small changes that may help someone begin seeing themselves differently. Where in your own life might becoming curious about what is still possible open a door you had assumed was closed? What You Are Invited to Discover: The difference that may emerge when “Why me?” becomes a different kind of question.A reason to remain curious when someone else’s expectations have begun shaping your own.The connection Tristan sees between everyday health foundations, brain health, and his personal recovery experience.Where small signs of change may begin rebuilding a sense of hope and possibility. An invitation to question what you have accepted while continuing to think critically about the choices that support you. Free Gift: My free stroke recovery bonus resources group on Skool: https://www.skool.com/free-stroke-recovery-resources-8907/about About the Guest: I was a college soccer athlete, and had many failed brain surgeries in 2019, when I was 20 years old. (At least one failed surgery in each lobe of my brain). These caused a massive brain stem stroke, and I lost full function of my left side. I couldn't walk, talk, think, etc. The doctors said I'd never recover, and that I'd likely be a vegetable, IF I survived. I regained VERY basic function of my left side within ~6-8 months, and the doctors said I wouldn't regain any more. This was true, until I started learning how to heal the body from the inside out in 2022. Ever since the start of 2024, I've been helping other stroke and tbi survivors make MORE progress on their recovery journeys. Work-Life Wellness After Stroke: Presence, Purpose, and What Matters with Roderick Jefferson

How can a stroke change the way you think about success, presence, and what matters most in your life? Sandra Lee speaks with keynote speaker Roderick Jefferson about the experience that interrupted a demanding corporate career and invited him to reconsider what he had been working so hard to achieve. Roderick shares his personal experience of stroke, losing abilities he had once taken for granted, and gradually relearning aspects of speech and everyday movement. Along the way, he reflects on the people who stayed beside him, the small things he began to notice differently, and the question that now shapes how he thinks about success: at what cost? Their conversation moves beyond what happened medically to explore presence, family, purpose, self-care, and Roderick’s idea of replacing work-life balance with “work-life wellness.” His story also offers a reminder that adversity can sometimes invite us to notice priorities, relationships, and everyday moments in a new way. As you listen, consider where your own pursuit of success may be inviting you to become more present with what already matters. What May Still Be Possible? Sound, Neuroplasticity, and Brain Health After Injury

Can sound, neuroplasticity, and focused attention offer a different way to explore brain health after injury? In this episode, Sandra Lee reflects on two phases of the work she has developed with people living with the effects of falls, accidents, strokes, and other injuries to the head. She first shares how she approaches intuitive sound healing, including the images and impressions she notices while working with someone and the importance she places on allowing each person to decide whether those impressions feel meaningful to them. Sandra then introduces a brain-training exercise connected with neuroplasticity and explores what she noticed when she began combining it with her existing sound-based approach. Through the experiences of two women she calls Nadia and Georgia, you’ll hear personal accounts of changes they noticed in areas such as sensory perception, movement, communication, confidence, independence, and connection with who they once knew themselves to be. These stories are individual experiences rather than promises of what another person will experience, but they open an intriguing question about what may still be available when recovery has been unfolding for months—or even years. Where in your own experience might there be room to become curious about a possibility you had stopped considering? What You Are Invited to Discover: A different way to consider the relationship between sound, attention, energy, and brain health. The role Sandra believes intuitive information may play when she works with someone after an injury. What two women noticed as their experiences of movement, sensation, perception, and daily life began to change. The connection between neuroplasticity and Sandra’s evolving approach to working with the brain.A possibility that opens when progress becomes connected not only with function, but with identity, independence, and looking forward to life again. Finding Your Beat Again: Rebuilding Hope and Purpose After Injury with Dori Staehle

Can rhythm, faith, and a renewed sense of purpose help you find a way forward after injury changes how life feels? In this episode, Sandra Lee talks with Dori Staehle about the accident that left Dori navigating a concussion, whiplash, pain, brain fog, and a growing loss of hope—and the unexpected role drumming came to play in her personal experience. Dori reflects on what happened when familiar options no longer felt sufficient and she began looking differently at a skill that had been in front of her all along. Together, Sandra and Dori explore the connection between adversity, creativity, faith, self-trust, and the willingness to stay open to possibilities that may not look conventional. The conversation also moves beyond Dori’s own story into purpose: how an experience that disrupted her life eventually influenced the way she serves others, and why age, uncertainty, or a major setback do not necessarily have to define what comes next. The RINSE Method: How to Rebuild Resilience After a Major Setback with Ian Bowen

What happens when recovery becomes less about getting back to who you were and more about becoming who you are now? Sandra talks with Ian Bowen about rebuilding identity, resilience, and self-belief after an unexpected medical crisis left him paralyzed from the chest down. When doctors told Ian he would likely need assistive equipment to walk and would never run again, he made a decision that shaped everything that followed: he would not allow someone else’s perception of his capabilities to become his reality. Over time, Ian learned that moving forward was not about becoming the person he had been before. It was about becoming fully who he is now and recognizing the small wins that could rebuild momentum along the way. He also shares the resilience framework that grew from his own recovery journey: Remember, Imagine, Notice, Shift, and Expect. Together, Sandra and Ian explore how looking back at past wins, visualizing what is possible, noticing progress, shifting focus, and preparing for both challenge and success can help you keep moving when life changes unexpectedly. What might happen when you stop waiting to feel fully ready and start building resilience one small win at a time? What You Are Invited to Discover: The mindset shift that helped Ian refuse to let someone else define what he was capable of.A different way to think about rebuilding identity when life no longer looks the way it once did.The small wins that can help restore belief, motivation, and momentum.Ian’s RINSE framework for remembering progress, imagining what is possible, noticing wins, shifting focus, and expecting challenge. What it means to build resilience before you need it and keep moving forward when setbacks come. Get Ian's Rinse Method Playbook HERE About the Guest: In 2009, Ian Bowen’s life changed in an instant when complications from spinal cord surgery left him paralyzed from the chest down. At just 32, with two young children and a growing career, he was told he would never run again. Instead of letting that prognosis define him, Ian chose to keep moving forward. Through a long rehabilitation journey filled with small wins, setbacks, and relentless determination, he rebuilt not only his physical strength but also his belief in what was still possible. That journey eventually led Ian to run two marathons and to create the RINSE Methodology, a framework built around remembering past wins, imagining what is possible, noticing progress, shifting perspective, and expecting both challenge and success. Today, through Positive Persistence and his Watch Me Mindset, Ian uses his story to inspire others to move beyond setbacks, reconnect with their potential, and refuse to let someone else’s perception of their capabilities become their reality. https://watchmemindset.com/ Resources: Share your Story with Sandra. The Awareness Beneath the Symptoms

What can change when something that has been operating outside your awareness finally becomes conscious? Sandra explores the relationship between conscious awareness, unconscious beliefs, and the patterns that may influence how you experience your body and your life. Drawing from her own experience with chronic pain, difficult relationships, and feeling disconnected from what she thought, felt, and wanted, she reflects on how much of her own life was being shaped by things she could not yet recognize. Through concepts she encountered in neuro-linguistic programming, Sandra shares the framework she uses to understand the conscious and unconscious mind. For her, becoming aware of previously hidden beliefs, assumptions, and experiences created an opportunity to respond to them differently. Symptoms are an important part of that process. Sandra describes them as one way the body may call attention to something that deserves greater awareness, while making clear that this is the perspective she uses to make sense of her own experiences rather than a medical explanation. What might become possible when you begin noticing what has been influencing you outside your conscious awareness? What You’re Invited to Discover: The patterns that may be influencing your life before you consciously recognize them.A different way to understand the relationship between conscious and unconscious awareness. The beliefs and assumptions that can quietly shape behavior and possibility. The role symptoms may play in bringing something into your awareness. What can begin to change once you recognize what was previously hidden. Believing Beyond What You’ve Been Told

How much of what feels impossible is being shaped by what you have chosen to believe? Sandra explores the role belief can play in brain health, physical recovery, and the willingness to keep moving forward when others say no further improvement is possible. She reflects on how limiting thoughts can become self-imposed boundaries, influencing whether you continue seeking answers or begin accepting less than the life you want. Drawing from her own experiences with pain, fear, overwhelm, and giving up when she did not know what to do next, Sandra shares how changing her beliefs helped her take action and create new possibilities in her body and life. She also looks at the connection between thoughts, emotions, energy flow, and physical function, inviting you to consider where your own beliefs may be keeping you stuck. A Broader Way to Understand Brain Health

Who is Brain Health & Healing really for? Sandra expands the conversation beyond physical brain injuries to include focus challenges, memory concerns, limiting beliefs, and the patterns that can quietly shape your choices, relationships, and sense of what is possible. She explores how accidents, strokes, concussions, aging, ADHD, and deeply held unconscious beliefs may look very different on the surface while still affecting the same connected system of brain, body, emotions, and nervous system. Whether you are struggling with mental fog, repeated self-sabotage, growing concerns about cognitive decline, or the feeling that part of you has gone missing, Sandra invites you to consider what your symptoms may be trying to communicate. Through personal reflections and client stories, she offers a broader definition of injury and a different way of understanding adversity. This conversation is an invitation to stop waiting for a diagnosis or perfect explanation before becoming curious about what may be ready to change. Resources: Share your Story with Sandra. She is the creator of The Spectrum of Anger™ and The Witnessed Body™, which integrates Intuitive Sound Healing and Combat Brain Training to support brain injury recovery, brain health, and dementia. Her work is grounded in the belief that symptoms are messages, not malfunctions, and that when those messages are finally received and released, the body can do what it already knows how to do. About

Welcome to Brain Health & Healing: Receiving Adversity’s Gifts, the podcast for people living with the effects of brain injuries and anyone navigating the aftermath of adversity. Hosted by Sandra Lee, a massage therapist and intuitive sound healing practitioner with 39 years of experience, this show explores what your brain and body may be trying to tell you and what becomes possible when you listen. Through The Witnessed Body™, Sandra combines decades of bodywork with Combat Brain Training, the only neuroplasticity program vetted by U.S. Special Operations Command, along with intuitive sound healing, NLP, and Human Design. Sandra believes symptoms are messages, the brain continues to heal throughout your life, and what you have been through may be guiding you toward something you could not have discovered any other way. Each week, you will hear real conversations, personal stories, intuitive insights, and a different perspective on brain health, emotional regulation, identity, purpose, and claiming the life your experiences may have been preparing you for. This podcast is for you if you or someone you love is living with the effects of a brain injury, concussion, stroke, or another life-changing adversity. You may have tried different treatments, followed protocols, and done everything right, yet still feel as though nothing is changing. Eventually, the hardest part may no longer be the symptoms. It may be the belief that nothing will change. That is exactly where this show begins. It is also for high performers, entrepreneurs, athletes, and caregivers who know there is more available and are ready to discover what comes next.
