Before Dawn gives us a virtual tour of the virtual Whisky Show 2020, the tech, the tastings and the spirits. We discuss differences between the wine and spirits world in their approach to virtual. Welcome to Day 4, Session 1 of the Interpreting Wine Hospitality Summit 2020. Today is unfortunately already the final day of the summit, but we’re going out in style with a look at the impact on retail during the pandemic. We start with former Interpreting Wine podcast guest James Dawson, Entrepreneur Founder of Humble Grape, a group of hybrid wine bars and stores in London.
He brings us up to date with the opening of Humble Grape’s fifth site in Canary Wharf last year and the immediate impact of the pandemic in March 2020. Right the way up to their recovery during August and the government's recent 6 person cap on groups in all hospitality venues. He talks about an experience based business and how this might differ from a retail based one. We talk potential legal recourse to the existing situation. Before he contrasts his experience of London, France and New York, rounds up the most successful innovations Humble Grape have implemented over lockdown. And looks ahead to how we recover from this situation.

    Episode outline:
    Catch up
    Is retail the saviour?
The impact of coronavirus on an experience based business
    Legal recourse
Contrast between London, France and New York
    Innovation at Humble Grape

Welcome to Day 3, Session 1 of the Interpreting Wine Hospitality Summit 2020. Today is all about the cocktail and bar sector and features Hannah Sharman-Cox and Siobhan Payne co-Founders of London Cocktail Week. Having already appeared on the podcast almost a year ago I was keen to revisit and this time with two mics to capture the conversation between them. The pair look back on London Cocktail Week 2019 in which they extended the fair to 10 days in honour of their 10 year anniversary. They talk about the early days of the pandemic and when it became a reality for them. We then go deep into the planning for London Cocktail Week 2020 and their massive adaptation to make sure the event went ahead. They discuss Eat Out to Help Out and its impact on their bar partners. They discuss the scale of LCW including bars and outdoor venues partnering for the first time this year. We talk about how the pandemic has affected the mix of bars taking part this year.

Welcome to Day two Session one of the Interpreting Wine Hospitality Summit 2020. Today is all about restaurants and we start with a long overdue visit to Tredwells to speak with Chef Owner Chantelle Nicholson. We first hear her origin story and transition from studying law into various roles in hospitality. Looking at her up to date ideas for what a restaurant can be, which has developed during lockdown. We talk about the circular economy and the passion that Chantelle has for supporting local producers. Chantelle takes us inside decisions she made at the start of lockdown and discusses how the team kept on the same page and communicated throughout. She discusses how they reopened and thoughts on keeping staff engaged throughout. Chantelle shares the triple whammy her part of Central London is suffering and how this contrasts with London neighbourhoods. What people learned about food during lockdown and how their buying habits may have changed for good. We talk no-shows and how the industry might start to change perceptions. Before she looks ahead to the end of furlough and beyond.

Intriguing info on Spanish wines

Lawrence is very passionate about Spanish wines and it shows in the personal touch he gives each of his podcasts. He goes deeper into the regions and varieties to give you a feeling like you are at the bodega with him. Enjoy!

Specific and engaging

If you want to get to know the bodegas of Spain, or just learn about wine styles new to you this is a great resource! I love the focus on cava.
