I'm Dr. Margaret, a psychologist for 30 years, TEDx speaker, and the author of Perfectly Hidden Depression. I created The SelfWork Podcast in 2016 to explain mental health treatment, and to give you the chance to consider therapy without thinking it's weird or that you can't "fix" your own problems. My team is so honored that five years later, SelfWork has earned nearly 5 million downloads! Each episode features the popular listener question. You’ll also hear “You Get the Gist” segments - a five minute run-down of a current topic - as well as interviews with outstanding guests, authors, or experts, adding to the wide diversity of topics listeners so appreciate. Regularly rated as one of the top mental health/depression podcasts out there, I keep it short and casual - and I'd love to hear from you. Please join me.

404 SelfWork: Acknowledging and Talking About Your Depression

404 SelfWork: Acknowledging and Talking About Your Depression

You have to acknowledge your depression in order to begin to talk about it. That may sound simple to do. But it's not quite so simple.

Why? Because nobody particularly wants to realize or admit that your way of "being" has changed, without you trying to change it. And in fact, you may have become so accustomed to being somewhat depressed, that it can lull you into thinking, "Well, this is just my new normal."

403 SelfWork: Thriving with Anxiety: A Conversation with David Rosemarin

403 SelfWork: Thriving with Anxiety: A Conversation with David Rosemarin

How do you thrive with anxiety? Dr. David Rosemarin is our guest today who talks specifically about how to understand your anxiety as something that can help you thrive - when you work with it, and not against it.

David is the director of the Spirituality and Mental Health Program at McLean Hospital, which is an incredible psychiatric hospital. And he's an associate professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. That's a lot of credits! He studies the relevance of spirituality to mental health. His own research has identified that faith is associated with improved treatment outcomes for depressed patients who see themselves as "spiritual beings."

402 SelfWork: The Lasting Impact of Trauma

402 SelfWork: The Lasting Impact of Trauma

Today we're focusing on the lasting impact of trauma. Many of us are quite good - or efficient is perhaps a better word – at avoiding and denying and building a façade that’s rock solid around you… that no one would guess that trauma had every occurred in your life. Or how it could be affecting you now.

I have a story for you that will illustrate how easily it can be affecting you in ways that you don't recognize... until you do. And healing from trauma can occur, perhaps slowly, but it's more than possible. As always, we'll focus on "what you can do about it."

401 SelfWork: What To Do When You Hit A Wall

401 SelfWork: What To Do When You Hit A Wall

What do you do when you hit a wall? And what IS that wall anyway? How often are you able to recognize that that’s what’s happening?

We'll focus on three different walls: exhaustion, self-doubt, and saying, "I don't know."

Our listener email is from a man who recognizes himself as being enmeshed with his mother and perfectly hidden depression.

400 SelfWork: The Tragedy of Perfectly Hidden Depression: A Conversation with Penny Gray

400 SelfWork: The Tragedy of Perfectly Hidden Depression: A Conversation with Penny Gray

Perfectly hidden depression can end in tragedy.

I don’t quite remember when Penny Gray and I first talked. It was after 2019 when PHD was published. But not long after.

She’s the widow of a man, Dave, who tragically fit the rubric of perfectly hidden depression. And killed himself suddenly and without any overt sign of depression.
