    THE BOYZ Kevin Calls Out K-Pop’s Industry | ENHYPEN, Taemin, ATEEZ, KiiiKiii + More

    THE BOYZ's Kevin has been speaking candidly about the K-pop industry, cultural appropriation, capitalism and why he believes K-pop fans deserve better. There were quite a few points I found myself agreeing with, so that's the centre of today's discussion as I get into what he said, where I think his criticism is justified and the uncomfortable relationship K-pop has always had with borrowing from other cultures while operating as an aggressively commercial industry. There's also a LOT happening elsewhere. ENHYPEN are already working on their next album and Ni-ki somehow received backlash just for mentioning it, ATEEZ are coming back in November, KiiiKiii ended promotions without a music-show win, XngHan & Xoul have introduced four new Japanese members, and Kim Soo-hyun's appearance at the AAAs is facing protests. I also get into the SKIBIDI backlash, why calling every criticism of it “it's just brainrot!” misses the point, and Taemin's latest album, which sent me into a completely different conversation about idols leaving the companies that built their musical identities. Creative freedom is great, but I'm increasingly convinced that some idols are exceptional products and performers without necessarily being particularly good at curating themselves as recording artists. And for this week's Micah's Picks, we're back with TUIDE! Sunkiss and ABD have officially made the cut after I was literally arguing with their fans about their debut last week.

    TUIDE Backlash Proves K-Pop Fans Can’t Handle Fair Criticism | Mark, BLACKPINK + More

    TUIDE have officially debuted, and while I found the song a little underwhelming, the bigger story for me became the reaction to my review. Some people took a pretty fair critique VERY personally, which opened up a wider conversation about how defensive K-pop fans can get when you don’t immediately praise a group they like. I also push back on the idea that I have some huge SM bias, especially considering I was just as critical of HEARTS2HEARTS when they debuted last year. Apparently consistency only counts when people agree with you lol. Elsewhere, I discuss Mark apologising again and previewing new music, BLACKPINK’s solo careers, and I’m officially introducing Micah’s Picks, starting with ENHYPEN’s Bad For You. It's essentially another form of Anatomy of a Song, but it’ll now occasionally appear at the end of my weekly episodes whenever there’s a song I really want to dissect instead of always needing its own separate episode.

    Vernon Says K-Pop & Pop Sound the Same… He’s Missing Something | BTS Chris Brown Backlash, TUIDE, ALD1 + More

    Is K-pop really becoming indistinguishable from Western pop? Vernon recently spoke about the similarities between the two, and while I understand his point, I think there are some pretty important nuances missing from that conversation, especially when you look at the history of K-pop and Black American music. I also get into the increasingly repetitive Stray Kids-coded soundscape popping up across from NEXZ, from the deep husky voices to nonsense hooks and production gimmicks, and why acknowledging similarities between artists shouldn't automatically be treated as an insult.     BLACKPINK's 10th Anniversary Was a MESS + Jay Park Responds to LNGSHOT Copying Claims

    Today we're getting into BLACKPINK's 10th anniversary and... what exactly was THAT?? From the lacklustre celebrations to Jisoo getting emotional, I talk about why such a huge milestone for one of K-pop's biggest groups deserved SO much more. Then there's WAYFBOY's debut, the immediate comparisons and accusations of them being inspired by LNGSHOT, and Jay Park's response to the whole thing. I get into where inspiration ends and copying begins, because some of the similarities definitely got people TALKING. Elsewhere, I discuss XngHan outselling Red Velvet by over 10K copies, Gunil leaving Xdinary Heroes, EVAN announcing Death of Me for September 7th, Sophia going on hiatus from BORESEYE, Mark's connection to a Christian group, plus my thoughts on Gayo Daejeon.

    In today's episode I take a deep dive into SM Entertainment's latest financial report, looking at the company's release schedule, future plans and why I have more questions than answers when it comes to SMTR25's debut. I also look ahead at August's packed release schedule, including upcoming Japanese releases from BOYNEXTDOOR, HEARTS2HEARTS and more. The second half of the episode focuses on the tragic story surrounding the Engene who died following online harassment, leading into a wider discussion about fandom culture, the responsibility artists and companies have, and why I think this conversation goes far beyond K-pop. I also touch on THE BOYZ continuing as nine members and the latest developments surrounding New's departure.

    Red Velvet Hold Back Their Harmonies on 'Velvet Summer' | Anatomy of a Song

    Red Velvet are BACK, so of course I had to put 'Velvet Summer' through the Anatomy treatment! This time though... surprisingly not THAT much to uncover? The harmonies and layering are noticeably more laid back and simple than what we usually get from Red Velvet, which is a bit of a shame considering how ridiculous their vocal arrangements can be. I also would've LOVED more R&B on an album called Velvet Summer 😭 but thankfully "Orchestra" came through and gave me some of what I was craving. Still VERY happy to have them back and hear these voices together again. A simpler Anatomy episode this time, but an interesting one nonetheless!

    BTS vs The GRAMMYs? HYBE Finally Speaks Out + KARD's Disappointing Sales

    Today we're diving into HYBE's surprisingly direct comments about the GRAMMYs after BTS' nominations and what this whole situation says about international recognition, timing and whether the Recording Academy moved the goalposts just as BTS were at their strongest. I also discuss the reports that BTS' "Butter" and "Dynamite" performances have been removed from the GRAMMYs website, KARD's disbandment and disappointing album sales, my thoughts on Red Velvet's album medley and what it says about SM's idea of "Velvet", as well as Kim Soohyun's return to the public eye and why I find his return so unsettling. As always, plenty of opinions, industry discussion and a few tangents along the way

    aespa's Japanese Mini Has Me Wanting an R&B Album | 'Kiss N Tell', 'In halo', 'Orbit Pop' + More!

    aespa's Japanese mini album turned out to be a really enjoyable listen, but what stood out most to me was just how sultry and natural their harmonies are. They feel completely tailor-made for the group's voices, and after hearing this project, I'd absolutely love to hear SM lean into a full R&B release in the future. There weren't loads of surprising vocal moments this time around, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Instead, this mini reminded me just how well aespa's voices blend together, especially on songs like "Kiss N Tell." I also hope SM keeps this brighter, upbeat direction for their next mini because the reception to this era has been so positive. As always, I break down the vocals using my Civilian, Athlete, Olympian and World Class ranking system, while looking at the harmonies, layering and arrangements that make these songs work.
