Consensual Non-monogamy Part 4: Mental Health Issues within CNM - Ep 30

Please join us for part four in our series on non-monogamy. This episode is all about how mood disorders and personality disorders can impact non-monogamous relationships. According to NAMI, one in five American adults experienced mental illness in 2020. When we couple this fact with the knowledge that consensually non-monogamy pokes at our unresolved attachment injuries more than monogamy, it makes sense to look this bear straight in the eyes. Consensual Non-monogamy, Part 2: Compassion - Ep 28

    Consensual Non-monogamy, Part 2: Compassion - Ep 28

Please join us for part two in our series on non-monogamy. This episode is all about self-compassion, but also compassion for our partners within consensual non-monogamous relationships (CNM). So often in Kate’s psychotherapy private practice she sees clients pleading for compassion while concurrently not giving it. And yet, its arguable that compassion is even more important than communication skills within CNM relationships given that even the most stellar communicators will have a crash and burn if compassion isn’t present. First, we discuss self-compassion and the self-work that needs to take place in order for it to be strong. Healing ego states, building positive affect tolerance, and healing attachment injuries are three areas explored. And then we discuss what blocks us from having compassion for our partners. A few such blocks are 1) the need to win, 2) shame spirals, and 3) catastrophizing. For more on CNM and open relationships, check out Kate’s book, Open Deeply: A Guide to Building Conscious, Compassionate Open Relationships which can be purchased wherever books are sold.

Very comprehensive

Ladies, excellent work! I’m loving the deep-dive into the discussion on non-monogamy. It’s, by far, the most comprehensive conversation I’ve heard about it thus far. Fascinating. Thank you!

Intense, but Important

I love their approach to these difficult conversations that were socially conditioned to think of as inappropriate.

Important Conversations for Today

The discussion early on about the use of sex trafficking laws to broadly stifle sex positive material was fascinating as I heard many things I was unaware was happening. Will have to go down that rabbit hole some more. Then also the way both hosts were both able to tell their personal stories with such good humor and grace when many would have given the tragedies all the focus. It was refreshing to hear two obviously strong people just share their journey without sensationalism but clearly show they’ve been through some stuff but came out the other side with some clarity and perspective. I’m eagerly awaiting more guests doing this.
