Books, Pickleball, GLP-1s & Other Midlife Thoughts

In this episode of Live Your Best Midlife, I’m sharing a little bit of everything that’s been on my mind lately, from books and TV shows worth your time to sourdough experiments, gardening, strength training, aging, travel, and getting outside your comfort zone in midlife. I’m talking about recent reads including The Correspondent, Theo of Golden, and Culpability, along with shows I’ve been watching like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Partners, and Shrinking starring Harrison Ford. I also dive into a bigger conversation about aging, muscle loss, nursing homes, GLP-1 medications, and why I believe strength training is about far more than aesthetics. We talk about why women make up the majority of nursing home residents, how muscle impacts independence as we age, and why I worry we could be heading toward a future epidemic of frailty if we focus only on getting smaller instead of getting stronger. I’m also sharing: my latest sourdough adventures (including a few imperfect loaves)what’s growing in my garden right nownon-toxic pest control for vegetableswhy I took my own advice and met a friend for lunchnerves about playing in a couples golf tournamentand why I genuinely admire the way Gen Z approaches travel, experiences, and uncertainty differently than many of us in Gen X did.Grab my favorite protein powder: https://www.equipfoods.com/jill and use code JILL for 15% off your first order! Why You Don’t Feel Like Yourself in Midlife

For this week’s episode, we’re having a conversation that I think so many women need right now. Have you found yourself feeling more anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, irritable, or just… off lately? Maybe you don’t quite feel like yourself anymore and you can’t put your finger on why. First, let me say this clearly: I am not a doctor, and this episode is not medical advice. I’m also not anti-medication. Medication, therapy, and professional support can absolutely be life-changing and necessary. But after coaching midlife women for years, I’ve noticed something. I don’t think many women are broken. I think many are depleted. In this episode, I’m sharing why modern life may be affecting your nervous system more than you realize, how hormone changes can impact mood in midlife, and why some of the simple things I talk about all the time like strength training, whole foods, movement, hobbies, getting outside, and community may matter far more than we think. We’re also talking about: • Why midlife anxiety and emotional changes can feel so different• Hormones, sleep, stress, and why you may not feel like yourself• Blood sugar, protein, alcohol, and mental health• Why strength training impacts more than your body• The connection between loneliness and emotional wellness• Questions to ask at your next doctor appointment if you’re struggling• Practical “start here” steps if you’ve been feeling mentally off And maybe the biggest takeaway: Maybe midlife isn’t the season where you’re falling apart. Maybe it’s the season where you finally realize you deserve care too. If this pep talk resonates with you, share it with a friend or post it on Instagram and tag me. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Travel in Midlife: What I’ve Learned, What’s Worth It, and What I’d Do Differently

In this episode I’m sharing some thoughts about travel in midlife… what I’ve loved, what surprised me, what went wrong, and what I’ve learned along the way. When our kids were younger, travel looked very different. Honestly, I mostly wanted to sit on a beach chair and recover from life. But once Randy and I started traveling on our own, we became much more adventurous and started exploring places all over the world. Over the years I’ve realized that travel isn’t just about seeing new places. It expands your perspective, wakes up your curiosity, and pulls you into the present moment in a way everyday life sometimes doesn’t. But travel also tests your mindset. Flights get cancelled. Plans change. You get lost in Barcelona or find yourself in a city during protests. Things go sideways. Those moments can be stressful in the moment but they also tend to become the stories you laugh about later. In this episode I also share some of our favorite travel experiences, including: • Why Switzerland completely stole our hearts• Why Italy is always a standout (but getting crowded)• Why Spain and Mallorca surprised us in the best way• Our surreal trip to Japan right before the world shut down in 2020• Why South Africa may have been our most incredible adventure ever• Why the British Virgin Islands are one of our favorite island escapes I also talk about something that has dramatically improved many of our trips: tours. From Devour food tours in Barcelona to a night lights tour in Paris and private tours in Rome and London, I’ve learned that the right tour can reduce stress and help you experience a place in a deeper way. We also talk about: • Why trains are one of the best ways to travel through Europe• Why shoulder season travel is often the sweet spot• The mindset that helps when travel inevitably goes wrong• Why pacing, sleep, and margin make trips far more enjoyable in midlife And if international travel isn’t your thing, that’s okay too. There are incredible places to explore right here in the U.S. and Canada. Maine in August, the Rocky Mountains, national parks, Sedona, and the California coast are all unforgettable in their own way. Travel has taught me that the goal isn’t just seeing the world. It’s staying curious about your life and remembering that there is always more to experience. I also share where we’re headed next… including another European trip and our annual “escape the August heat” getaway to Northern California. *Grab my favorite protein powder (and I've tried them all!) for 15% off your first order with code JILL: https://www.equipfoods.com/jill
