After 3 Years of Symptoms, Chuck Carroll Finally Gets Answered

For the past three years, Chuck Carroll — host of The Exam Room podcast from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) — has been battling a baffling health mystery. Chuck began experiencing constant bloating and a strange feeling of drunkenness, despite not drinking alcohol. The symptoms were persistent and severely disrupted his daily life. Doctors recently performed an exploratory procedure that may have finally revealed the cause. Chuck had gastric bypass surgery 17 years ago, and during the procedure doctors placed a feeding tube into a small portion of his stomach that had not been used in years due to the bypass. Something remarkable happened: When food was delivered into that isolated portion of the stomach, his symptoms completely disappeared. But when he returned to eating normally through the larger portion of his stomach, the symptoms returned immediately. Now doctors believe they have identified the root of the problem. Chuck is scheduled to undergo gastric bypass reversal and hiatal hernia repair surgery on April 17, with hopes that the procedure will restore his health. Chuck shares the full story of his medical journey, what doctors discovered during the exploratory procedure, and what he’s expecting as he prepares for surgery. We’re wishing him the best and look forward to having Chuck back in June for an update after surgery. 👍 Subscribe to our channel for more conversations about plant-based health, wellness, and inspiring personal stories.
