New research on LSD for generalized anxiety and what’s helpful about a psilocybin experience

Send us a text In today’s episode of the Psychedelic Therapy Frontiers podcast we discuss a paper recently published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) entitled, “Single Treatment With MM120 (Lysergide) in Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.” This is a report on the results from Mind Medicine’s phase 2b clinical trial that Reid and I both had the pleasure of working on at Numinus Network’s clinical trial site, Cedar Clinical Research. We discuss what GAD is, a brief history of LSD, why LSD might be helpful for anxiety, the study design, the difference between session monitoring vs psychedelic-assisted therapy, and more. Near the end of the episode we briefly discuss another recently published paper, this one on psilocybin and how the phenomenology of a psychedelic experience might contribute to positive psychological changes.  For those of you who are new to the show, welcome! Becoming wise in the age of AI with Jeff Burningham

Send us a text Rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has me both excited and terrified. On one hand, AI could contribute to exponential advancements in science, technology, engineering, and socioeconomics leading to human flourishing unlike anything we’ve ever seen. On the other, AI could derange human psychology, widen power gaps, disrupt society, and even evolve beyond human understanding or control. So what do we do about this? In today’s episode of the Psychedelic Therapy Frontiers podcast we’re going to explore this question with Jeff Burningham as we discuss his new book, The Last Book Written by a Human: Becoming Wise in the Age of AI. Jeff is a bit of a renaissance man. Entrepreneur, artist, philanthropist, teacher, athlete, politician, ecclesiastical leader, author, husband, and father are just a few of the many you could describe Jeff. We discuss what prompted Jeff to write this book; how AI is a mirror for humanity; the importance of “rehuminization”; the important lessons we need to learn from our bodies, nature, and the family; humanity’s collective hero’s journey; what we need to change at both personal and society levels; and much more. The hedonic treadmill: Why happiness can feel so elusive

Send us a text Why does happiness feel so elusive for so many of us? Maybe you’ve had the experience where you long for a change, believing that once this change occurs then you’ll finally be happy. Then that change happens, but it didn’t deliver lasting happiness. You buy the new thing, take the vacation, achieve the goal, get the promotion and you feel happy for a while but eventually it feels like you’re back where you started.    In today’s episode of the Psychedelic Therapy Frontiers podcast, we explore the phenomenon knows as the “hedonic treadmill”--the tendency for people to quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative events or life changes. We discuss examples of this in action, possible evolutionary explanations for this tendency, the role of dopamine, how it relates to habit formation and addiction, exceptions to this tendency, ways to get off the treadmill, and much more.
