    Imagining Your Worst-Case Scenario

    Imagining Your Worst-Case Scenario

How much wisdom is in the old saying, “plan for the worst, but hope for best”? In this episode, Julien and Kiersten Saunders (@richandregular) argue against our cultural staple of indefinite optimism. There is now enough data to suggest that most working-age American’s financial forecast should include plans for a sudden job loss or significant disruption income. Nobody likes to imagine the worst case scenario, but it may be the key to building financial resilience.

    We cover:
Income volatility and the probability working-age American’s income is likely to be disrupted
The most vulnerable demographic groups for wage stagnation
What the ‘Two Income Trap’ is
How to practice pessimism in the short-term and the long-term

The connection between hobbies and identity
How to squeeze some cash flow out of a depreciating asset

When Your Loved Ones Disagree with Your Financial Choices

When Your Loved Ones Disagree with Your Financial Choices

Julien and Kiersten Saunders (@richandregular) discuss the interpersonal conflict that comes with tackling a meaningful financial goal. In fact, conflict is usually a key theme in most financial advice. The harsh truth is while your self-esteem can take a hit when the people closest to you don’t support your financial decisions, it’s not a reason to stop.

    In this episode, we discuss:
Conflict with others being the hardest part of wealth-building
What can happen when your financial plan is at odds with your social agenda
How a fear of moving away from home can affect your financial trajectory
How the experience of managing conflict evolves over time and across your financial journey

    Competitiveness in Relationships

    Competitiveness in Relationships

Julien and Kiersten Saunders (@richandregular) explore the healthy and unhealthy ways people compete in relationships -- and not just the romantic ones! Whether it’s a desire to ‘out-gift’ your partner, or a race to ‘out-earn’ your colleagues, competition in relationships can have both positive and negative effects on your financial goals.

    In this episode, we discuss:
Ways competition might show up in relationships
A study that suggests friendly competition is a way to “spice things up”
The social shifts in becoming a breadwinner and the pressures associated with being one
How to manage a competitive spirit without ruining relationships

Adjusting Your Financial Plan when Life Happens

Adjusting Your Financial Plan when Life Happens

Julien and Kiersten Saunders (@richandregular) discuss three life-changing events: becoming a parent, divorce and death. What do they all have in common? They can be very, very expensive. And ironically as common as these experiences are, they are some of the least talked about topics.

    In this episode, we discuss:
How to financially prepare for a child/new family member
Some best practices/resources for handling a large medical bill
Solid financial routines for married couples that may mitigate messy divorce proceedings
Estate planning and ways you can financially prepare for the inevitable.

Financially Supporting a Parent (Our Story)

Financially Supporting a Parent (Our Story)

Julien and Kiersten Saunders (@richandregular) are discussing their personal experience of moving their mom out of Senior housing and taking on the role of financially supporting a parent. Caring for elders and children at the same time isn’t a new concept, but a recent report suggests that modern caregivers are younger and more ethnically diverse and newer to caregiving as a whole. Millennials and Gen X’ers are feeling the squeeze.

We don’t have any magic solutions, but in this week’s episode, we share:
How Julien’s upbringing and cultural norms impacted his financial planning
What led us to step in and provide financial assistance
What it means to be part of the “sandwich generation”
Our favorite resources on navigating difficult money conversations with parents
