Ep. 168: Uncomplicating Wellness in a Sea of Women’s Health Advice with Jenn Trepeck | Wellness Culture | Nutrition News | Health Coach | Women’s Health | Bio Stacking | Hypothyroidism

How do you know what health advice to follow when you’re fatigued, bloated, constipated, and overwhelmed by TikTok, Instagram, and conflicting provider opinions? Are biohacks like cold plunges, red light, and endless supplements actually helping—or are you missing the foundational “bio stack” that makes everything work? In this episode of the She Talks Health podcast, I sat down with Jen Trepeck, a health and lifestyle coach, host of the award-winning podcast Salad with a Side of Fries, and author of Uncomplicated Wellness, to talk about why the wellness world has become so noisy. I shared what clients are searching for when looking for answers about their health (fatigue, bloating, missing periods, constipation, hypothyroidism, estrogen dominance, mold, parasites, and more) and how many people now show up having tried every diet, piles of supplements, and trendy routines, yet they’re more confused than ever. Jen opened up about her own story of growing up around dieting, gaining weight between high school and college, and cycling through restriction until she learned how the body actually works with food and got on the same team as her body. We talked about how to filter wellness noise by going back to what you already know to be true for you, stopping the habit of outsourcing decision-making, and checking bias—who wrote the headline, who funded the study, and what we personally want to believe. We also went deep into her key concept: bio stacking over biohacking. Jen explained that biohacks are marginal improvements, which can be great if your foundation is strong, but most people aren’t even hitting the most basic foundations of health. Her “bio stack” foundation includes fuel, movement, hydration, sleep, stress, and connection, and the goal is to experiment and observe real feedback from your body instead of chasing perfection. Jen’s hope with her book, Uncomplicated Wellness, is that it helps you relax, define wellness for yourself, and build a plan that supports your health without opting out of real life. When we start listening to our bodies and tuning out the nutrition news that doesn’t work for us, we can finally start building on our foundations of health and find normalcy again. Ep 167: Decoding the New Food Pyramid For Hashimoto’s and Thyroid Problems | Food Pyramid | Nutrition Guidelines | Health Literacy | Nutrition Headlines |

Are you confused by the new food pyramid and wondering what it means for your thyroid, gut health, and metabolic health? How do you sort through nutrition headlines without adding your own bias? In this solo episode, I share a little about how I like to think about new nutrition news — why you can’t just read the headline, why bias (including industry funding and our own preferences) matters, and why the pyramid won’t apply the same way to everyone. I talk through what I like about the updates, like reducing the old 6–11 servings of grains recommendation and emphasizing a more protein-rich diet, which is especially beneficial for our autoimmune and Hashimoto’s people. Plus, what I question — especially the saturated fat messaging and the heavy emphasis on dairy. I also explain why vegetables and micronutrients matter so much, where legumes could’ve gotten more attention, how carnivore dieters fit into the conversation, and why I still love the plate method as a practical starting point for visualizing a healthy diet. The bottom line: put your health detective hat on, watch your symptoms, and use real testing like HTMA, blood work, genetics, and stool testing, to get clear on what your body actually needs. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to health and nutrition, so the new food pyramid should be used simply as another tool to help guide you toward optimal health and nutrition for you. Ep. 166: Women’s Weight Loss Resistance Isn’t “Just a Hormone Issue” with Terry Tateossian | Weight Loss | Diet & Exercise | Metabolism 35+ | Sustainable Weight Loss | Perimenopause and Weight Loss

How do you lose weight in perimenopause without extreme dieting? Are macros, strength training, and cellular health the missing pieces for women over 35 who feel stuck? In this episode of the She Talks Health podcast, I sat down with Terry Tateossian from House of Rose Retreats and coaching to share her comeback story—from being a busy mom 80 lbs overweight to realizing she’d entered perimenopause at 37, and was stuck in a cycle of restriction, nightly bingeing, and frequent alcohol use. Terry explained how she tried countless diets that “worked” short-term but weren’t sustainable, leading to rebound weight gain and worsening health. She shared the shift that changed everything: moving to a macro-based nutrition and intuitive eating approach that kept her full with balanced meals, reduced sugar cravings, and ultimately helped her lose over 80 pounds during perimenopause while improving emotional eating patterns. We also talked about cellular regeneration and what it means in real life—how the body is designed to rebuild tissues on cycles, and how lacking the right nutrients can interfere with that process. Terry connected this to her own health improvements, including no longer experiencing heart palpitations, improving PCOS symptoms, improving eyesight, getting fewer cavities, and building significant strength over time. Terry shares beginner-friendly guidance, so anyone who wants to begin getting unstuck from old dieting and exercise patterns that don’t work has a manageable framework to get started today. If you’re ready to let go of outdated ideas about perimenopause, menopause, or how women’s weight gain is “just a hormone issue”, this is the episode for you. Ep. 165: I Tried (and Failed) to Detox From Mold Exposure: My Mold Detox Story Part 3 | Mold symptoms | Mold Detox | MARCoNS | Gut Health | H. Pylori |

How do you know when mold detox symptoms are a normal part of the process versus a sign you need to slow down? What should you do if mold detox triggers fatigue, low HRV, and gut issues? This is part 3 of my mold detox story, where I share what happened when I started detoxing from mold, and how I had to adjust when things didn’t go as I planned them. In this episode, I talk about the difference between manageable detox discomfort and your body telling you to slow down—because detox shouldn’t take over your whole life or make it hard to function. Within the first couple of weeks of this detox, I started noticing clear signs my body was struggling — deep fatigue, low HRV with a higher resting heart rate, looser stools, and intense emotional symptoms like agitation, sadness, and sudden anger. Instead of pushing through what could be labeled a “Herxheimer response,” I listened to my body and adjusted my plan to better support it through the protocol. I also share how differently my husband responded to the same detox plan at the same time, which reinforced how individualized detox needs to be. As things progressed, I noticed new clues that shifted my entire focus: loss of appetite, burping, and reflux — signs that made me think toxins were recirculating through my gut, and that low stomach acid and possible H. pylori were in the picture. Your body is always giving cues, and when you get multiple data points pointing to the same thing, it’s worth listening to them! I decided to pause detox and prioritize gut support, and then got strong confirmation through both my acupuncturist and my chiropractor that my gut and liver were both struggling through the detox. This is your reminder to always listen to your body, especially when dealing with something as serious and difficult to detox as mold. If you’re on the same path as me, or think you might be struggling with mold illness or something similar, don’t miss this episode, and be sure to check out the SHE Thrives hybrid program to get personalized support alongside a community of other women having similar experiences as you. Ep. 164: Weight Loss for Women 35+: Stop Undereating and Overexercising with Ashley Fillmore | Weight Loss | Diet & Exercise | Metabolism 35+ | Metabolic Fix | Sustainable Weight Loss | Perimenopause and Weight Loss

Why can’t I lose weight after 35? Can exercising more and eating less still cause weight gain? How much should I really be eating and exercising? This week, I welcomed metabolic health expert Ashley Fillmore to talk about metabolic health for women over 35 and the framework she uses to help women achieve sustainable body composition goals. She also shares her personal experience with body dysmorphia, chronic over-exercising, restrictive eating, hormone imbalance, loss of menstrual cycle, and difficulty getting pregnant. Early in her career working in a wellness center, Ashley noticed that the standard “exercise more, eat less” approach wasn’t working for many women—especially those doing intense training and restrictive diets. So she decided to pursue advanced training in hormone and metabolic health related to sustainable weight loss. We unpack what metabolism means in the context of body composition, including how the body breaks down and uses calories, and the role of BMR (basal metabolic rate) and TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). Ashley warns that many women unknowingly eat below their BMR—sometimes due to calorie apps—contributing to metabolic adaptation (also called metabolic damage), weight loss resistance, fatigue, stalled gym progress, irregular cycles, and sleep problems. We discuss how increasing food intake strategically can improve these symptoms. We also talk about why weight loss resistance often increases after 35 due to hormone shifts associated with perimenopause, including declines in estrogen and progesterone and increased insulin resistance. Ashley emphasizes that insulin is a fat-storage hormone and that processed “diet” foods and blood sugar instability can prevent fat loss even when someone is in a calorie deficit. Ashley outlines her three phases of transformation: the Repair Phase (address metabolic adaptation and hormonal/metabolic issues), the Rebuild Phase (eat at maintenance, establish strength training consistency, and build foundational skills), and the Results Phase (a strategic, sustainable body composition transformation with a conservative, science-based approach to deficits, followed by maintenance education). If you’re a woman who has been struggling to lose weight despite “doing everything right,” are in perimenopause or close to it, or just need a little extra help getting your metabolism in check, don’t miss this episode packed with amazing advice tailored to women experiencing metabolic health struggles. Ep. 163: I Tried (and Failed) to Detox From Mold Exposure: My Mold Detox Story Part 2 | Mold symptoms | Mold Exposure | MARCoNS | MCAS

In this episode of the She Talks Health podcast, I’m continuing with the second part of my personal journey dealing with mold illness. In the last episode, we covered how I realized I had been exposed to mold, the tests I did to confirm it, and the symptoms I experienced that led to my discovery. This week, I revisit the onset of my symptoms, ranging from anxiety and insomnia, fatigue, sleep problems, gut issues, and more, which appeared suddenly after years of being in remission from Hashimoto's and other health problems. I also recount the initial steps I took, including HTMA and mineral balancing, before diving into the complexities revealed by my thyroid tests, which showed alarmingly high antibody levels. We’ll dig into the results of my MARCoNS test, which demonstrated the presence of biofilms and antibiotic-resistant bacteria in my nasal passages, contributing to my chronic inflammation and immune challenges. Additionally, I discuss the critical insights gained from genetic testing with Dr. Erica Gray of Toolbox Genomics, which highlighted specific detox pathways that needed support in my body based on my genetics. This new information helped me formulate a modified and more effective detox plan tailored to my genetic needs, including liver support, multiple binders, and glutathione supplementation. While this new protocol has offered hope, it has not been without setbacks, and I’m committed to sharing my detailed experiences and the adjustments I’ve made along the way in upcoming episodes. Join me as I continue to document this intricate journey, sharing my successes and challenges throughout this whole mold detox process. If you're wrestling with similar health issues, or know someone who is, I hope my story provides you with practical steps and encouragement to pursue effective detoxification and regain control over your health. Ep. 161: I Tried (and Failed) to Detox From Mold Exposure: My Mold Detox Story Part 1

In This Episode:  [1:45] Why I’m starting this mold detox series — my mold detox story[3:30] The symptoms I experienced during and after mold exposure[8:45] Finding my mold exposure root cause and the tests I ran to identify it[11:20] Getting to the bottom of my adrenal depletion and mold toxin load[15:30] Beginning the mold detox and mineral rebalancing process[18:18] How long does it really take to re-regulate your system after mold exposure?[19:00] Why I had even more symptoms after I started my mold detox protocol[23:10] The importance of regulating your nervous system before starting any detox Summary: Can mold exposure cause severe health effects? How do you detox from mold exposure? And how do you know if you’ve been exposed to mold? Last year, I struggled with mold detox and felt like I failed. Despite my experience as a functional health coach who has helped over 600 women detox from many different things, I encountered unique challenges when dealing with mold exposure myself.  That’s why I’m starting a new series on the podcast to share my personal story of facing and understanding mold illness, including the physical and emotional symptoms I experienced, such as insomnia, anxiety, and gut issues. I also discuss the tests I ran to identify the problem, including my favorite–the HTMA test– and a total toxin burden test, which revealed severe mineral depletion and multiple mycotoxins in my system.  In this first episode, I share how these tests showed significant depletion of essential minerals like sodium and potassium, which impacted my adrenals and thyroid function, resulting in a ton of unpleasant symptoms. I also discovered six(!!) types of mycotoxins in my body, further confirming severe mold exposure.  This led to a deeper understanding of my condition and the interconnectedness of my symptoms, such as joint pain, skin breakouts, and menstrual issues. Learning this also emphasized the importance of not just guessing, but testing, and working with trained professionals to find the root causes of health issues. Even as an FDN who does this work for others daily, I still struggled to take my own advice and take action against all of these mystery symptoms at first.  This is a topic I’ve wanted to dive deeper into for a long time, so I’m excited to finally be sharing this mold detox journey with all of you, so you can also learn what worked for me, what didn’t, and why it’s important to follow a mold detox protocol with a trained professional. So join me on this journey as I continue to explore and document the process of effective mold detoxification.  In future episodes, I'll go deeper into genetic testing, the specific detox protocols I'm following, and the lifestyle changes supporting my journey. If you're struggling with similar health issues, I hope my story brings you encouragement and practical steps to get tested and start taking meaningful steps toward getting back your health.  Disclaimer: This information is being provided to you for educational and informational purposes only.
