    A man can't just sit around and do nothing...

    A lawn chair, forty five weather balloons, a tank of helium, and a BB gun. That’s not a movie plot, it’s the true story of Larry Walters, a truck driver who wanted to fly so badly that he turned his backyard into a launch pad and accidentally floated to about 11,000 feet. We tell the whole story, from the dream that started it to the moment a pilot reports “a guy in a lawn chair” near Los Angeles International Airport, and the Navy helicopter rescue that finally brings him back to Earth.  But the real reason we share it is what happens after he lands. When a reporter asks why he did it, Larry says, “A man can’t just sit around, you know?” That line opens a deeper conversation about boredom, restlessness, and how quickly an aimless moment can push us into decisions we never thought we’d make.     Grandparents

    Childhood has changed fast, and you can feel it the moment you sit down with a teenager and watch how different their world is from the one you grew up in. After spending time with our grandchildren and sharing a simple moment around a new video game, we step back and talk honestly about the dangers, pressure, and confusing messages kids face today and why grandparents still matter more than ever.  We lean on two anchors: lived experience and lasting truth. I read a striking letter Paul Harvey wrote to his grandchildren in the early 1970s, full of memorable lines about hand-me-down clothes, learning humility, doing hard things, and building real character. Some details are from another era, but the theme lands right now: resilience is formed, not purchased, and a meaningful life is often learned through tough moments, responsibility, and love that holds steady.  We also connect the conversation to Scripture, including Psalm 92 and Deuteronomy 4:9, as a reminder that older men and women can still “produce fruit” and that we are called to remember what God has done and pass it on to our children and grandchildren.     Different Strengths, One Body

    You can love Jesus and still feel totally baffled by the people around you. One person wants a plan, another wants a party, another wants peace, and another wants to lead the charge. So what if the friction you feel is less about “bad attitudes” and more about God-designed differences you haven’t learned how to read yet? We start with 1 Corinthians 12 and Paul’s clear picture of the body of Christ: one body with many parts. Then we connect that Scripture to a practical, memorable personality framework from Dr. Gary Smalley and Dr. John Trent. Their temperament test uses four animals and it’s surprisingly helpful for everyday life. We break down the lion (decisive leader), the otter (fun-loving people person), the golden retriever (steady and supportive peacemaker), and the beaver (analytical, organized detail thinker), along with the strengths and challenges each style can bring to relationships and teamwork. Next, we ground it in Ephesians 2:10: you are God’s masterpiece, created on purpose for good works. That means you are not the same masterpiece as your spouse, your friend, or your coworker and you do not have to be. When you learn to recognize different strengths, you stop assuming the worst, communicate with more patience, and build unity without demanding uniformity.     A Shipwreck, A Fire, And The Prayer God Answers

    A ship goes down in the South Pacific, and one man makes it to shore alive: a preacher who is furious at God. He builds a life from wreckage, finds water and food, and still wakes up every day asking the same questions many of us whisper when life hurts: Where are you, God, and why won’t you answer me? Then the worst thing happens. While he’s away gathering food, his hut catches fire and everything he’s built is swallowed by flames. He collapses in anger and grief, convinced this is proof that God has abandoned him. But when the smoke clears, a ship appears on the horizon. Rescue comes for one unexpected reason: the sailors saw the smoke as a distress signal.     You Have to Listen to Hear

    God can feel painfully quiet when you’re stressed, tired, and out of answers. That’s why so many of us end up saying the same simple line: “I need a word from God.” Today’s five-minute encouragement starts there, with the real-life emotion behind that prayer, and the honest question hiding under it: If God is with me, why does everything still feel so hard? We go back to Judges 6 and sit with Gideon in the middle of a crisis. Israel is being crushed by the Midianites, and Gideon is literally hiding while trying to protect what little he has. When the angel of the Lord calls him a “mighty hero,” Gideon pushes back with the kind of doubts people rarely admit out loud. Where are the miracles? Why hasn’t God acted? Has God abandoned us? If you’ve ever wondered where God is when the pressure won’t let up, you’ll hear your own thoughts in his words. Then we listen to God’s response, and it’s not what many of us expect. Instead of a long explanation, God gives Gideon a direction and a promise: “Go with the strength you have… I am sending you.” We connect that same pattern to Paul’s struggle in the New Testament and God’s reply: “My grace is sufficient for you.” The takeaway is simple but strong for anyone looking for Christian encouragement, spiritual resilience, and guidance for hard seasons: God is with you, and you can take the next step.
