Children of the Corn (1984) Analysis & Recap: The Cob Mob

EPISODE 37 | Homicidal kids sacrificing their parents to a corn demon sure is one way to beat the flyover state allegations. Do we need to bring back spanking? In this episode of Terrorific, host Brandon O. frolics through the cornfields of Nebraska with a breakdown of the 1984 horror cult classic, Children of the Corn. Adapted from Stephen King’s 1977 short story of the same name (later published in 1978’s collection Night Shift), Children of the Corn follows a couple as they unwittingly stumble into a deserted town where a cult of murderous children have a habit of offering adults to a demonic deity, He Who Walks Behind the Rows. Listen along as Brandon hilariously recaps the film’s plot and dissects its themes, including the dangers of blind faith, religious fundamentalism, and navigating external influences on impressionable youth. Someone really needs to ground those little hellions! Is Children of the Corn Worth Watching? | With an average Letterboxd rating of 2.7, the film is often criticized for its slow pacing and lackluster execution, with Brandon giving it a personal rating of 1.5 stars. However, diehard Stephen King and horror fans alike may still want to give it a chance for its chilling premise and iconic imagery. The Mangler Analysis & Recap: Auntie Origami

EPISODE 36 | Whether it’s fitted sheets, femurs, or fibulas, our equipment here at Blue Ribbon Laundry can fold anything! Stain remover sold separately. In this episode of Terrorific, host Brandon O. steams and presses his way through the 1995 Stephen King horror film featuring a bloodthirsty laundry machine, The Mangler. Adapted from Stephen King’s 1972 short story of the same name, The Mangler follows small-town cop John Hunton as he investigates a series of gruesome incidents centered around a, seemingly demonic, industrial speed iron and folding machine. Listen along as Brandon humorously recaps the film’s plot and analyzes its themes, including the illusion of control and the inheritance of family burdens and trauma. Daddy issues much? Is The Mangler  Worth Watching? | The Mangler is a Stephen King Night Shift adaptation that leans into occult horror, demonic possession, and dark themes of human sacrifice, generational trauma, and corrupt small-town power structures — all revolving around a killer industrial laundry machine. Despite being a collaboration between three horror legends — Stephen King, Tobe Hooper, and Robert Englund — the film’s silliness leads to misfires more times than not, earning only a one-star rating from Brandon (but a 2.7 average on Letterboxd). However, the use of gory practical effects should serve as a high point for horror fans. Cast & Crew: Robert Englund as Bill Gartley — best known as Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise Ted Levine as Officer John Hunton Daniel Matmore as Mark Jackson Vanessa Pike as Sherry Ouelette Dimitri Phillips as George Stanner Lisa Morris as Lin Sue Directed & Co-written by Tobe Hooper (along with Harry Alan Towers) Shout Outs for Correctly Guessing the Film: The Whole Damn Enchilada | @the_whole_damn_enchilada_pod Latest Episode - Rhonda Shear Interview! The Mist Analysis & Recap: Noir 36

EPISODE 35 | Calling all seafood lovers! Come on up to Bridgton where our calamari is literally out of this world! It may bite back, but that’s a later problem. In this episode of Terrorific, host Brandon O. highly advises you to stay indoors as he analyzes one the best Stephen King movies with its infamous ending, 2007’s The Mist. Adapted from King’s 1980 novella of the same name, The Mist is a science fiction and psychological horror film that follows David Drayton, a husband and father living in Maine who gets trapped inside a local grocery store with his young son and fellow survivors after a mysterious, monster-filled mist rolls into town following a powerful storm. Listen along as Brandon recaps the film’s plot and dissects its themes, as what begins as a survival horror story quickly evolves into something far more terrifying — a tale about what fear does to ordinary people. From giant tentacled creatures and acid-webbing spiders to alien pterodactyls tearing people apart, The Mist is loaded with plenty of gruesome moments to satisfy any horror fan that Brandon hilariously breaks down through his usual dark humor. The Lovecraftian monstrosities are bad, but the biggest danger? A self-proclaimed prophet and her proselytizing. Godspeed! Is The Mist Worth Watching? | Brandon rates it a 3.5 out of 5 on Letterboxd (in line with its 3.4 average), with the lackluster and aged CGI being the film's biggest weakness. But despite its visual shortcomings at times, it remains a masterclass in tension, character, and thematic depth that horror and Stephen King fans alike shouldn't sleep on. A new adaptation is also in the works at Warner Bros., with Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep) at the helm — and Flanagan has confirmed it will go in a completely different direction from the 2007 version. Cast & Crew: Thomas Jane as David Marsha Gay Harden as Mrs. Carmody Laurie Holden as Amanda Andre Braugher as Norton Toby Jones as Ollie Written, Directed & Produced by Frank Darabont Themes Discussed: Fear and human behavior — What do people do when survival instincts kick in? Mob mentality and radicalization — How fear drives people toward false prophets and group violence Religion and manipulation — Where is the line between comfort and control? Parenthood and sacrifice — The film's ending as a meditation on protecting one’s children when faced with an impossible choice Mental Health Resource: If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm or suicide: 📞 Call or text 988 Source: https://www.slashfilm.com/1111687/the-mist-director-frank-darabont-turned-down-a-much-larger-budget-to-protect-his-infamous-ending-exclusive/ Connect & Subscribe: Instagram & YouTube: @TerrorificPodcast Leave a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen Every Thursday before a new episode drops, a hint is posted on Instagram — guess the movie correctly and get a shoutout in that episode!
