Atlantic CEO Nick Thompson on What Running Can Teach Us

Nick Thompson is the CEO of The Atlantic. But he moonlights as a damn good runner. At 44, he ran a marathon in 2 hours and 29 minutes, making him one of the fastest marathoners his age on the planet. He later set an American age group record in the 50K. He has run in blazing heat with ice tucked into his hat and in frigid cold with Vaseline dabbed on his nose. He's run up sunny mountain trails and down dark city streets. He has run, and run, and run some more. His relationship with the sport is the subject of his new memoir, The Running Ground. Did I just find my people? As I listen to commercials. I’m hopeful. In my simple description of “people” that are okay with enough for you less for me are “Sheep in Wolf clothing”. They know. But not enough for their “Golden Calf’s”; will allow solutions. When any money is involved.

Disappointed in Veo

I’d love to see this podcast platform even more thought leaders. I want my country to do a better job of elevating calm people with good stories, who know how to tell those stories well. I really liked hearing Sam’s telling of where he thinks investment should go with AgTech, his point that many markets are not actually big enough for climate disruption tech, and his ability to tell a clear story. Most of all, I liked his take on optimistic realism for the future. Cheers also to our host of interjecting to say that individual choice is not sufficient for a food revolution. I liked this critique of Kass as well. Something America has to get better at is identifying WHERE and HOW individual choice starts and stops in our capitalist system: we too often are told that individual consumer choice must seed all change. That’s too much responsibility on individuals. We need BOTH top-down and bottom-up change.

I’ve shared many of the books and ideas with my family, friends and colleagues. This podcast can actually help you improve everything from your relationships, to your productivity, to your health. It’s essential listening.

The latest AI podcast was a straight puff piece that failed to ask about the morality of a technology that relies on scraped and stolen copyrighted material and causes immense environmental damage the more people use it. The authors were not asked challenging questions. Of course AI makes everything more efficient and cost-effective for a business in the same way stealing people's vehicles makes running your taxi service more affordable. The creators and authors who have had their work robbed to make it easier for people to plan their vacations and create a letterhead deserve better than this tripe. it is my policy not to listen to podcasts that don't ask hard questions about AI. I expected better from you.
