EP 60 - "Our Children are Listening" - How Body Talk Affects our Kids with Lisa Dahl

On this episode, we welcome Lisa Dahl who shares how our body talk and the ways we speak about food and bodies around home affects our kids.
    Lisa and I discussed:

How the early messages we send to our kids about eating (have more, it’s not time to eat, eat this not that) cause children to distrust their own cues and their bodyHow body talk, of any kind, leads kids into comparing their body to the so-called ideal and to begin to believe that their worth is found in their appearance.  Tips for body neutral language you can use around your house and how to cultivate an attitude of “all bodies are good bodies” and gratitude for what our body can do rather than focusing on how our body looksHow we can teach our kids to honour their own bodies cues in order to build body trust and autonomy. Why we first need to do our own work to heal our own relationship to food, exercise and body image before we can teach our kids to do the same.---
About our Guest:Lisa Dahl is a certified Intuitive Eating and Body Image Health Coach.  Through Intuitive Eating, she helps women make peace with their food and body. Ep 59 - Setting Goals that Stick

Ep 59 - Setting Goals that Stick

Having goals is proven to help us be more successful and they can be a useful motivation tool while providing direction and a plan to follow.
However 90% of goals are abandoned before completion which can leave us feeling discouraged and disappointed in ourself.
In this episode, I’ll explain how to go beyond SMART goals to set goals that stick.
I believe there are 2 missing pieces in the traditional goal setting framework, that when included in the process, can help you commit to your goals on a whole new level and drastically increase your likelihood of seeing them through.

Replay: EP 13 - Are your goals fizzling?

Replay: EP 13 - Are your goals fizzling?

We're taking a break at The Joyful Movement Show over the month of December.  Please enjoy this classic replay and we'll see you back here with a fresh new season on January 3rd, 2022.

Most people begin the New Year with fresh goals - a desire to grow, improve and become a better version of themselves.
Usually around this time though, the motivation and resolve you had January first starts to fizzle.  We are either relying heavily on willpower at this point, or are feeling like a failure because the willpower has run out.
80% of New Years Goals are abandoned by February 1st, and 90% sometime after that.
Why is this??  It’s not because you failed.  It’s not because you weren’t strong enough or did something wrong.
It’s because the way that we have been taught to set goals is flawed.  We’ve been taught to chase outcomes and that when we achieve the outcome we’ll feel better - but that rarely happens.
On this episode, I’ll teach you the mistakes we make with goal setting the traditional way, and the mindset shift that is required to set goals that actually inspire you into action that WILL result in that feeling of success and pride that you are after.
Tune in to rekindle your spark and breath new life into your goals for this year.

Replay: EP 8 - 10 principles #6 - Stop relying on external validation

Replay: EP 8 - 10 principles #6 - Stop relying on external validation

We're taking a break at The Joyful Movement Show over the month of December.  Please enjoy this classic replay and we'll see you back here with a fresh new season on January 3rd, 2022.

On this week’s episode, we’re talking about the 6th principle of joyful movement which is to stop relying on external validation.  By that I mean fitness trackers, apps and even the scale to tell you that you are doing it “right” in terms of exercise.
About 20% of people in north america wear a fitness tracker, but it’s interesting to note that about ⅓ of people who own one will stop wearing it within 6 months and almost half will stop within a year.   Which leads me to question - why?
It seems that a lot of women struggle in their relationship with a wearable tracker.  In one study that looked at 200 women with a Fitbit tracker, 79% felt pressured to reach their daily targets, while 59% reported that they felt their daily routines to be controlled by Fitbit.
Feeling pressure to perform, keep up or compete-  these lead to negative feelings about movement  - like anxiety, or not being good enough.  Whenever we feel negativity towards movement, it’s really hard to feel motivated.
Listen to discover how your fitness tracker could be killing your motivation or causing you to have an unhealthy relationship with exercise, and how practicing attunement can help you re-discover joyful movement.

Replay: Ep 5 - Principle 3 of joyful movement - say no to punishment

We're taking a break at The Joyful Movement Show over the month of December.  Please enjoy this classic replay and we'll see you back here with a fresh new season on January 3rd, 2022.

Tune in as we continue on with our series on the 10 principles of joyful movement.  This week we discuss principle 3 - Just say no to punishment.  We’ve been told for a long time-”no pain, no gain”.   The myth is that the only way to get fit is to push ourselves to the brink 5-6 days a week.   We’re told we need to be stronger than our excuses.
    But I don’t think it’s working.
No Pain No Gain is the most overused “motivational” saying, that is really anything but.
Buying into this mentality gets us nowhere but injured and exhausted, so we inevitably give up.
In this episode, I’ll give you tools you can use to know the difference between challenging yourself and pain and how to achieve steady progress towards your goals without dreading exercise.

Kaseyshu ,

Reframe your idea of fitness and enjoy being in your body!

As a personal trainer who has seen the whole “eat less, move more” paradigm continue to fail in my own life and my clients’ lives, I am grateful for you to share the message of joyful movement. I can tell you have not only done your research, but have been intentional in presenting the information with compassion alongside relatable stories from others. I always feel like listening is well worth my time, and I feel better moving in my body already. Highly recommend!

A needed message

Through dieting and abusing my body I have became completely disconnected to the point where I can’t even enjoy movement anymore, which is something that is normally therapeutic. I am so glad I found this podcast when I did. It’s so relatable and the message is kind, truthful and effective. And I love hearing her Canadian accent ... Love it!!!

@maggielandesmd ,

Trainer with heart!

Kim is the consummate professional, and she legitimately cares about health promotion! Her podcast is an easy listen that puts exercise in a whole new light!
