Morocco make history as rampant Ramos replaces Ronaldo

Morocco make history as rampant Ramos replaces Ronaldo

After 17 days of non-stop action, Jimbo, Duncan Alexander, Tim Spiers and Daniel Storey take stock after another huge day at the World Cup.

Portugal smash the Swiss 6-1 to progress to the quarter-finals, on an evening where all of Fernando Santos’s decisions paid off. Including dropping Cristiano Ronaldo for hat-trick hero Goncalo Ramos.

Morocco become just the 4th African team ever to reach the last 8 of the World Cup. As Maher Mezahi explains, a star is born in manager Walid Regragui. But where now for Spain, who have very little to show for their thousands of passes.

Plus former Netherlands winger Ryan Babel joins us to preview the Dutch team’s clash with Argentina on Friday and explain why he rapped about Louis Van Gaal.

    Produced by Charlie Jones.

    RUNNING ORDER:
    • PART 1: Portugal 6-1 Switzerland (02.00)
    • PART 2a: Morocco beat Spain on penalties with Maher Mezahi (13.00)
    • PART 2b: Highlights from the first 17 days (27.00)
    • PART 3: Netherlands v Argentina preview with Ryan Babel (36.00)

Brazil will face Croatia in the quarter-finals after Luka Modric and co huffed and puffed their way past Japan in a game that featured perhaps the worst penalty shoot out of all time.
Also in the podcast, we look ahead to Tuesday's last 16 ties, with Switzerland taking on Portugal and Alvaro Romeo giving his thoughts on Spain's match with Morocco.
Make sure you join us again tomorrow to see how it all goes down.

England see off Senegal to tee up tie with world champions France

England see off Senegal to tee up tie with world champions France

Jimbo welcomes Carl Anka, Lynsey Hooper, Julien Laurens and Jack Pitt-Brooke into the pod after a bumper day of last 16 World Cup action.

England, inspired by Jude Bellingham, ease past Senegal in convincing fashion. Maybe Gareth Southgate is good at this managing at major tournaments malarkey.

That said, the Three Lions face the French in the quarter-finals, after the holders pick off Poland. Olivier Giroud completes his remarkable career story by becoming his nation’s all time top scorer. And Kylian Mbappe looks like the best player on the planet.

Monday sees Brazil play South Korea while Japan take on Croatia. Tas Okawa tells us what the best week in Japanese football history has meant to the people back home.

The Netherlands turn up as the USA exit, and Demba Ba on England-Senegal

Jimbo’s joined by Michael Cox and Tim Spiers as the knockout stages of the World Cup get underway.

Argentina make their way past a spirited Australia with Lionel Messi turning it on. But is it their defensive steel that could take them all the way?

The Netherlands impress as they brush aside USA with the wing-backs flourishing and Memphis Depay opening the scoring from a 20 pass move. As for America, Paul Tenorio tells us the striker search starts now.

England battle Senegal and the ITV curse on Sunday. Demba Ba tells us why Gareth Southgate should fear conceding the first goal. And penalties.

The Athletic’s Carl Anka reminds us why it grates Ghanaians so much still.
Gilmar Deledon joins us from Uruguay to tell us they don’t think about Ghana at all…

Consistent

Show is tops in consistency.

I look forward to each episode . Content and pundits are insightful and not merely on re: pol agenda ( well, for the most part. Jim pitches his misplaced energy agenda, too).

Please buy Natalie and Mauricio operating microphones… or rescue the two as they must be down a well.

Enough of Natalie

Good banter, good knowledge but please for the life of me please stop booking Natalie and Lynsey ……. Natalie brings absolutely nothing to the show. She struggles to express herself in English and if she’s not talking about Brazilian domestic players she’s useless. She also struggles so badly to speak English she can’t even express a proper point….. just gibberish.

And Lynsey made one of the worst arguments I’ve ever heard in football by claiming teams in the WOrld cup, teams who have already advanced are disrespectful to their opponents if they test their players……… I’m sorry is this the World Cup or an 6 year old local kick about for charity?? Lol what a joke. So many smart football minds available and this is who you’re booking??? Laughable
