"Autism Just Means Autism": Understanding Autism and Complex Trauma with Dr. Luke Beardon | Ep. 32

Dr. Luke Beardon is a senior lecturer in autism at Sheffield Hallam University and a multi-award-winning educator with more than 30 years of experience working alongside autistic individuals and families. He began engaging with autism in his early teens through hands-on work and has since built his understanding primarily through lived experience rather than purely academic models. Dr. Beardon is known for challenging deficit-based and pathologizing views of autism, openly critiquing terms like “disorder” and questioning traditional uses of the spectrum. He argues that autism itself does not cause dysfunction and that many difficulties arise from environments that are unsafe or ill-suited to autistic needs. His work emphasizes authenticity, safety, empathy, and the importance of adapting environments rather than trying to fix autistic people, with a strong focus on reducing trauma and honoring individual experience. He has published eight books on autism and has multiple academic journal publications. Read Dr. Beardon's blog: Perspectives on Autism Explore Dr. Luke Beardon's books Subscribe to stay tuned!
