"Autism Just Means Autism": Understanding Autism and Complex Trauma with Dr. Luke Beardon | Ep. 32

Dr. Luke Beardon is a senior lecturer in autism at Sheffield Hallam University and a multi-award-winning educator with more than 30 years of experience working alongside autistic individuals and families. He began engaging with autism in his early teens through hands-on work and has since built his understanding primarily through lived experience rather than purely academic models. Dr. Beardon is known for challenging deficit-based and pathologizing views of autism, openly critiquing terms like “disorder” and questioning traditional uses of the spectrum. He argues that autism itself does not cause dysfunction and that many difficulties arise from environments that are unsafe or ill-suited to autistic needs. His work emphasizes authenticity, safety, empathy, and the importance of adapting environments rather than trying to fix autistic people, with a strong focus on reducing trauma and honoring individual experience. He has published eight books on autism and has multiple academic journal publications. Read Dr. Beardon's blog: Perspectives on Autism Explore Dr. Luke Beardon's books Subscribe to stay tuned! A Police Officer’s Battle With Trauma, Brain Injury, Addiction, and his Journey to Recovery | Ep. 30

Hal Hughes appeared to have everything in place. A wife, four children, a respected career as a police officer, and a reputation built on strength and service. Then a violent on-the-job assault changed the trajectory of his life, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury and setting off a gradual, unseen unraveling. In this deeply honest episode, Hal shares what followed. PTSD, chronic pain, identity loss, and an addiction to prescribed painkillers that slowly took control. He speaks openly about how close he came to losing his family, his career, and himself, and about the moment that finally forced him to confront the cost of survival without boundaries. Now sober for many years, Hal has rebuilt his life as a registered psychotherapist, speaker, and advocate for trauma-informed healing. This episode is for anyone navigating trauma, addiction, burnout, or the question of who they are after everything falls apart. 🫂 If this conversation resonates with you, share it with someone in your life. They may truly need it. Subscribe to stay tuned!
