S5E21 Why Carbs Are NOT The Cause Of Insulin Resistance, PCOS + Type 2 Diabetes | Calvin Scheller

S5E21 Why Carbs Are NOT The Cause Of Insulin Resistance, PCOS + Type 2 Diabetes | Calvin Scheller

Calvin Scheller is an 18-year-old science extraordinaire who began studying and mastering medical literature in order to better communicate with his physicians after his own experience with autoimmune disease at the young age of 13. His courageous journey of self advocacy during a time when he felt alone and baffled by his symptoms led him to memorize, digest, integrate, and teach others about the complex mechanisms within our bodies (and how to heal through nutrition and lifestyle). He is a superb science communicator and now health coach – taking the difficulty out of reading medical studies, and putting the power of their information in our hands. Today, Calvin gives us a master class on insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, PCOS and why carbohydrates are NOT the cause of these conditions. We discuss the dietary factors that contribute to insulin resistance (and the many misconceptions you’ll find online), as well as the best ways to increase your insulin sensitivity and master your metabolic health well into old age.

    HERE’S THE JUICE:
Why carbohydrates are not the cause of insulin resistance
How excess dietary fat is more problematic for insulin resistance than excess carbs or sugar
Why saturated fats can be more inflammatory within the context of insulin resistance than plant fats
The true mechanism behind insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome: excess fatty acids within our cells
How we can burn off the fatty acids that cause insulin resistance and why blood sugar spikes aren’t the FULL issue, they’re more of an effect
Why insulin resistance begins and how it’s actually an adaptation
How inflammation also drives insulin resistance and other holistic factors you need to take into account like chronic gut infections, to mineral deficiencies like zinc, to stress, processed foods, sleep issues and more
Why insulin resistance within the ovaries is specifically tied to PCOS and exactly how to target this with diet and lifestyle

S5E20 The Truth About GMOs & How to Eat Around Corruption in Our Food System | Courtney Swan

S5E20 The Truth About GMOs & How to Eat Around Corruption in Our Food System | Courtney Swan

We’re kicking things off with an impromptu hello and life update from Olivia — then diving into the nitty gritty with Courtney Swan, a real food activist who is on a mission to fix our broken food system. Today she’s answering the question: are GMOs safe for consumption? There are five genetically modified crops on the market that have become so abundant that they’re used in almost all packaged foods… knowing what they are and where they’re found is the key to learning how to eat your way around corruption in our food supply. In this episode, Courtney articulately breaks down the practices being used in agriculture today – clarifying ways we can be supporting farmers doing things right (and tangible ways to not fall victim to our current food system).

    HERE’S THE JUICE:
What are the five genetically modified foods? WHY do we have such an overabundance of them on the market?
What food lobbying is and why soda is more accessible on food stamps than produce
How monocropping is negatively affecting farmers
How food hybridization and genetically modifying our crops are not the same practice
What the problem with corn is now, and why we are continually overfed and undernourished
Why seed oils are in so many of our foods – creation from industrial waste products
The best practices that you can adopt day-to-day to help decrease your consumption of seed oils and reduce inflammation

S5E19 The Angry You Isn’t the Real You: How Hormone Imbalances Change Us | Dr. Corina Dunlap

What if you’ve never actually experienced your true personality? The truth is, when our hormones are out of whack, we’re totally different people. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, there are some key ways that we can all reduce inflammation and regulate our hormones, according to Dr. Corina Dunlap, a naturopathic women’s health and hormone specialist. In this episode, she gets juicy about the link between cortisol and ovulation (hint: we’re all too stressed out) and dives deep into the importance of relationships – with others, ourselves and mother nature.

    HERE’S THE JUICE:
What does it feel like when we’re safe in our bodies? This is what balanced hormones feel like!
How inflammation can affect our mood, and make it hard to understand what our baseline or that “safe” feeling should feel like.
What the “goldilocks hormones” are – we don’t want too little or too much of them!
What the first line of action should be in addressing ovulation issues
Why unplugging your wifi at night could be the best trick to getting better sleep
How chronic stress doesn’t allow your body to feel safe enough to digest properly or ovulate
The best practices that you can adopt day-to-day to help with inflammation.
Clear questions you can ask yourself, like: is this me, or is this my hormones?

S5E18 You Don’t Need to Be Vegan to Save the Earth | The Truth About Regenerative Agriculture with Taylor Collins

S5E18 You Don’t Need to Be Vegan to Save the Earth | The Truth About Regenerative Agriculture with Taylor Collins

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to reverse the damage we have done to our earth? Have you been told that going vegan is the only way to do so? When Taylor Collins bought 900 acres of factory-farmed land, it was completely barren, desolate, and degraded. But by working with nature’s cycles and reintroducing animals in order to loosen the soil and give back to the land, Taylor transformed his farm into a thriving ecosystem that supports higher crop yields, healthier soil and more nutritious food. In this episode, we talk about the power of connection, the “green narrative,” and what we as consumers can do to help our earth today. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now – let’s dive in!

    HERE’S THE JUICE:
How factory farming works against nature’s principles to yield a higher output yet lower nutritional value
Taylor’s belief that humans aren’t inherently destructive but our values of “more more more” absolutely are
Why monocropping as a “solution” to global food insecurity is promoting a broken system
How regenerative farming mimics the cycles of nature and creates community
Why we don’t need to stop eating meat but we need to rethink how we do it
The idea that healthy soil is the KEY to nutrient-rich foods and why topsoil is so critical
Why “Impossible” Meat isn’t actually a better or more sustainable solution than regeneratively farmed meat
Why our farmers are in crisis – both personally and financially
How to vote with our dollars when it comes to food and support the growing community of regenerative farmers

MCAS and POTS

The episode about histamine issues, MCAS and POTS was life changing. I never knew I had anything wrong with me until I got sick last year and suddenly developed daily hive breakouts. I feel like my entire existence has just been validated and I’m not crazy. Thank you so much!

I want to hear more from the guests

I have been listening since season 1 and was really looking forward to this new season. There are topics Olivia presents that I am so excited for and there are moments where it feels like she completely takes over and it’s almost like she’s the one being interviewed. I have stopped listening to some of the episodes half way, it just felt hard to finish. I wish there was less rant and more questions for the guest. There are times where after she is done giving feedback, or adding to an answer the guest gave, it doesn’t really lead into a question. Maybe she wants more of a conversation feel? I don’t know. Olivia is full of wisdom and knowledge, I absolutely love her herbal line, and I do trust what she puts out there but lately these episodes have been a hard listen. I don’t feel I leave the episodes with the tangible tips I use to leave with in earlier episodes.

Not as good as it used to be

I used to really love the show but lately Olivia does the majority of the talking even though she has incredible guests on. She’s also constantly plugging her products, which gets old. I wish it would go back to her guests sharing more and educating about a topic. Let’s hope 🤞🏻
