Welcome to Whole-Hearted Eating™ : where non-diet nutrition, weight-inclusive care, and integrative health collide. Whole-Hearted Eating is a philosophy created by your hosts, Dana Monsees and Cristina Hoyt, Licensed Integrative Clinical Nutritionists and Body Image Coaches. We believe you deserve to have a joyful relationship with food and your body even if you have a chronic health condition or symptoms that just won’t quit. This show goes beyond introducing you to new, expanded ideas - we’re bringing the real talk (no BS) vibe with tangible tools to get you officially out of the all or nothing mentality, learn to accept your body, and how to untangle nutrition from diet and wellness culture.

Parenting in the age of diet culture with Virginia Sole-Smith
Cristina interviews Virginia Sole-Smith about her newest book, Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture; where she explores the impact the “war on childhood obesity” has caused kids of all ages to absorb a daily onslaught of body shame. She offers research-based strategies to help parents name and navigate the anti-fat bias that infiltrates our schools, doctor’s offices and family dinner tables. Today, she and I are diving the book together and discussing how this system starts at beginning of parenthood, the expectations and guilt parents feel when their children don’t meet medical body size guidelines, where fatphobia is seen the most, and ultimately researched-backed approaches to what you can do to empower your children to own their relationship with food and their body.

Non-diet approaches to IBD treatment with Brittany Rogers
Brittany Rogers joins us today to talk about non-diet approaches to IBD treatment, and how our diet-obsessed culture intersects with IBD. Brittany is a Dietitian who specializes in working with people with crohn’s and colitis get into symptom remission so they can focus on living their life instead of living under the constraints of their disease. Brittany was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in high school so she knows firsthand what it’s like to suffer through IBD, and how to come out on the other side. On today’s episode we work through some of the main misconceptions and mental gymnastics involved in IBD, including unhelpful comments by friends, family, and practitioners. How do we take an add-in approach to IBD, instead of an elimination approach…especially when it feels like “everything hurts and I’m dying?”

Confused or feeling sabotaged by food
Absolutely love how Dana and Cristina show a healthy and different perspective to healing one’s relationship with food and eating. These girls are a breath of fresh air and so worth listening too! Grateful for their honest real life conversations.
Hosted a migraine quack
As someone who overcame over a decade of disabling chronic migraines through actual medicine, I know how hard it can be to find good evidence-based treatments and prevention from the mainstream medical system. But that doesn’t mean the quackery and related testing this doc recommends is the solution! She was shoveling one woo woo idea after another with no indication to listeners how far off the scientific evidence base she’s flying. I feel genuinely bad for anyone suffering with headaches like I did being led down the guest’s quackery rabbit holes.
My migraines can be influenced by what I eat, so I have no issue with RDs undertaking this topic, but they should choose a credible source. Functional medicine started with one controversial doc out of Cleveland Clinic and still has absolutely no medical organization of physicians behind it. There’s no, for example, organization analogous to the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) or American Academy of Neurology. And it’s not because mainstream medicine doesn’t look to prevention as well as treatment. The ACLM, for example, focuses heavily on prevention.
I’d like to see some of the ideas promoted by this podcast generally integrated into medical practice, so it’s unfortunate the hosts decided to give this quack a platform. Suffering people are vulnerable to misinformation, especially when coming from a podcast where they generally feel heard and supported. It can be hard for laypeople to know what’s credible advice, but I expect more from the hosts of this podcast.
Awesome podcast!
Dana & Cristina, hosts of the Whole-Hearted Eating podcast, highlight all aspects of nutrition, wellness and more in this can’t miss podcast! The hosts and expert guests offer insightful advice and information that is helpful to anyone that listens!
