    Episode 25: Andy Hoxsey of Yountmill Vineyards and Napa Wine Company

    Andy Hoxsey is a four generation farmer and has made most of his life here in the Napa Valley farming Organic wine grapes in the Yountville AVA. He took over managing the Yountmill Vineyards in 1991, which farms over 500 acres, and resurrected the Napa Wine Company and converting it into one the first successful multi-brand custom crush wineries in the country. He laid the ground work for a booming California wine industry that expanded rapidly during the 90s and into the next few decades there after. It was a gamble but he saw the need and made it happen. Nile and Andy talk about his background, the families that helped farm his families vineyards and how he gambled and made what is now a strong revenue component to any winery today.

Nile Zacherle sits down with Seth Burgess of the USGS (United States Geological Survey) where he is a Volcanologist focusing in on the past events and future possible ones. Our other guest is Paul Anamosa who is a Napa based Soil Scientist who has mapping soils for decades. Both of these guests are PhDs in their fields and have a lot of perspective. Lets just say we started chipping away at the iceberg!

    Episode 18: Regional Explorations- Washington State with Chris Peterson of Avennia Wines

    Washington State has a storied and unique geological history that offers terroirs that are both unique and varied. This offers winegrowers like Chris Peterson a wonderful palate of vineyards to work with to create wines with tension and power. Washington is a relatively warm region as one moves east toward the Yakima Valley area or AVA which has now added 21 total AVAs to its potential. Rhone varieties (Syrah/Mouvedre/Grenache) and Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Etc) have been grown there since the mid 20th century on their ‘Own Roots’ thus offering a pure lens of plant material from ground to grape. In this podcast we skim Chris’s background, Avennia’s origin story as well as their other brand Liminal from the WeatherEye Vineyard of Red Mountain’s extreme terroir and how much personality Washington Wines offer. There is no question that this is just the beginning of our wonderings in this Pacific Northwest winegrowing region. Also refer to Washington State Wine for detailed maps of AVAs and Terroirs.
