    Yawn Chorus

We often associate yawning with being tired or bored - but this week's episode explores whether it could be a clever way to cool down our brains? Hannah and Dara discover humans aren't the only species that yawn. From cats to chimpanzees and even fish, plenty of other vertebrates engage in this ancient behaviour which scientists believe evolved hundreds of millions of years ago. And it doesn't always happen as a spontaneous reflex to feeling tired but can also be triggered by watching other people do it. • The Invisible Rules of Time: Language and Behavior (With Keith Chen)

The Invisible Rules of Time: Language and Behavior (With Keith Chen)

Think about the habits that define your day-to-day life—how you manage your money, look after your health, or tackle your to-do list. You might assume they reflect your personality or upbringing. But what if they’re actually shaped by the language you speak? In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, explore how subtle linguistic shifts can change the way you make decisions—and bridge the gap between who you are today and who you want to be tomorrow. We travel to a unique cultural crossroads tucked high in the Alps of northern Italy. Marc Röggla, head of the European nonprofit Center for Autonomy Experience, shares the gripping history of South Tyrol—a region where political borders were redrawn overnight after World War I. He shares how his grandfather's generation risked their safety in secret, candlelit "catacomb schools" to keep their German mother tongue alive under fascist oppression—setting the stage for a surprising study on how children in the exact same region process time and temptation today.  Then, Katy speaks with UCLA behavioral economist Keith Chen about his foundational research demonstrating how "future-less" languages (like German or Mandarin) can erase the mental distance between now and later. They discuss how these tiny quirks in grammar alter decisions around saving, smoking, and exercise—and how you can trick your brain into better choices, no matter what language you speak.

Making Waves

What happens when you give water a really good shake? You might expect splashing, spilling and general aquatic chaos - but under exactly the right conditions, something much stranger can happen... In this episode, Hannah Fry and Dara Ó Briain dive into the world of 'Faraday waves': amazing geometric patterns that, in certain circumstances, will appear on the surface of a vibrating liquid. They discover how the renowned physicist Michael Faraday accidentally discovered this remarkable phenomenon in the 19th Century; debate whether they could ever occur in a swimming pool; and find out what on earth alligators have to do with it. Along the way, the pair encounter eerie ‘square’ seas and learn about new ways satellites are helping us to understand the ocean’s wildest waves! If you have an everyday mystery for the team to investigate, contact them on curiouscases@bbc.co.uk. • Why Am I Unhappy?

    12 Oct

    Why Am I Unhappy?

We often imagine that feelings of unhappiness come from outside us — in our circumstances or the difficult people in our lives. But what if the forces that erode our happiness come from within? Psychologist George Loewenstein joins us to explore why our minds nudge us toward the negative, even when we want to feel happy. He also offers ways to better understand these forces and lessen their power over us. And on Your Questions Answered, psychologist Alison Ledgerwood returns to respond to your questions about our tendency to focus on the negative.  What if your emotions aren't reactions to the world, but predictions that your brain is making? We discuss this mind-bending idea on our YouTube channel. Check it out, and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss any of our upcoming videos!  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Trapped in the icy waters of the Northwest Passage

For centuries, the Northwest Passage, the long-sought sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through northern Canada, was a holy grail of Arctic exploration. Even now, sailing through it isn’t guaranteed. Mark Synnott, a National Geographic Explorer, writer, and adventurer, attempted to sail his own boat through the Northwest Passage to retrace the doomed 1845 expedition of British explorer Sir John Franklin. None of the Franklin expedition’s 129 men made it home, but what exactly happened remains a mystery.   For more information on this episode, visit natgeo.com/overheard. Want more? Get the inside scoop on Mark’s Northwest Passage voyage and see gorgeous photos in the August issue of National Geographic. Watch Explorer: Lost in the Arctic, premiering August 24 on National Geographic and streaming the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. And to go even deeper, Mark will tell the full story in his book Into the Ice, coming fall 2024 from Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group. Also explore: On paper, Sir John Franklin’s expedition seemed to lack for little. There were ironclad ships, steam engines, libraries totaling 2,900 books, and even animal companions—two dogs and a monkey. Here’s how it all went wrong. Explore another polar expedition gone wrong—Shackleton’s expedition to Antarctica aboard Endurance—in the Overheard episode “What the Ice Gets, the Ice Keeps.” Learn more about your ad choices.
