BN Daybreak: Sex offenders register still hidden; Joburg's 18-year red tape; Viljoen on SA

Why is the National Sex Offenders Register still not public? Parliament's police committee chair Ian Cameron tells Chris Steyn he sees no urgency from government, and that a random sample of just ten offenders turned up 113 rape convictions, 12 murders and 67 life sentences. MOVE SA's Rali Mampeule says Johannesburg now takes seven years to approve a development, one shopping centre took 18, and wants the private sector to step in. Value investor Piet Viljoen tells Alec Hogg the delisting wave shows South Africa is bumping along the bottom. Plus Wall Street's record close.

Fuel prices surge as govt weighs action & SA cracks down on independent repair barriers

Stephen Grootes speaks to Karabo Tjale, EWN Traffic Reporter, Bobby Ramagwede, CEO of the Automobile Association and Sanisha Packirisamy, Group Economist at Momentum about whether the government should provide temporary tax relief as sharply higher fuel prices put renewed pressure on households and businesses. With petrol prices rising by more than R3 a litre in October, the debate is over whether protecting consumers now could prevent a broader hit to spending, business margins and economic growth, or whether further relief would put unsustainable pressure on government finances.  In other interviews, James Hodge, Chief Economist at the Competition Commission talks about South Africa’s new right-to-repair guidelines, what they mean for consumers and independent repairers, and how manufacturers could be affected by restrictions on spare parts, repair information and software that locks replacement components to devices. The Money Show is a podcast hosted by well-known journalist and radio presenter, Stephen Grootes. Dana White: This Generation Thinks You Can Build A Business From Home, It's Impossible!

Are you letting the past or fear of failure hold you back from achieving ultimate business success? Dana White, the relentless CEO behind the UFC, reveals the exact psychological frameworks and savage business tactics required to dominate your industry and build an empire. BizNews Edge: Piet Viljoen says smart money is buying South Africa

Two big JSE companies had received buyout offers in under a month, one of them listed for 62 years, and value investor Piet Viljoen said both deals undervalued the businesses on a ten-year view. He also expected most shareholders to take the money anyway. A day after Sanlam's R505-a-share offer for the rest of Santam, and weeks after India's Solar Industries moved on Omnia, Viljoen told Alec Hogg why insiders and foreign buyers were seeing value that local investors kept missing, and what the delisting wave said about where the market sat in its cycle. He took on the Reg 28 offshore debate, BEE and the 4 November elections, and held his ground when Alec challenged him on MK, before turning to Wall Street, where he argued that a handful of AI stocks were masking real damage beneath record highs as US bond yields climbed to levels last seen in 2002.

Santam set to leave the JSE in Sanlam buyout & Durban port delays and the future of the RAF levy

Stephen Grootes speaks to Andrew Bahlmann, CEO of Deal Leaders International about Sanlam’s proposed buyout of Santam’s remaining shares for R505 a share, a 26.6% premium to Santam’s 2 October closing price. Sanlam, which already owns about 63% of Santam, wants to take the insurer fully private and delist it from the JSE, A2X and Namibian Stock Exchange. The deal still requires shareholder and regulatory approval, with Santam’s independent board unanimously backing the transaction. In other interviews, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy talks about the worsening delays at the Durban Gateway Terminal, where vessel waiting times have nearly doubled since ICTSI took over operations, and the anticipated changes to the Road Accident Fund fuel levy. With the government considering a new funding model for the financially distressed RAF, including reducing its reliance on the fuel levy. Revisited: Your Instincts Know What You Want with Happiness Expert Arthur Brooks

Team Simon here! A Bit of Optimism is on a short break, and brand-new episodes return October 27. Until then, we're revisiting a few conversations we keep coming back to. This week it's Arthur Brooks, a longtime friend of Simon's and one of his favorite people to talk to. Have you ever felt like you're falling behind? Everyone else seems to have a plan, a timeline and the next rung on the ladder lined up. Any detour, like a gap year, a pivot or a job that isn't quite right, feels like losing ground. Arthur Brooks thinks you're running the wrong race. Chasing a finish line is one of the surest ways to end up unhappy. He argues that happiness lives in the process, not the outcome. Arthur is a bestselling author and teaches one of the most popular classes at Harvard Business School: a whole course on happiness. He lives what he teaches, too. He played French horn professionally from 19 to 31 and then reinvented himself as a behavioral scientist. After that, he became president of a Washington think tank without ever having raised a dollar. When he left that job with no idea what came next, he walked the Camino de Santiago to find out. In this conversation, Arthur explains how to know when to trust your gut, why reinvention starts with curiosity rather than skills, and why meaning has collapsed for people under 35. Simon pushes on something that worries him: if AI takes away the struggle, what happens to the wisdom that struggle builds? In this episode you'll learn: ➡️ The 80/20/0 rule for knowing a big decision is the right one ➡️ Why reapplying your skills isn't the same as reinventing yourself ➡️ Why your career is a spiral, not a staircase ➡️ The "arrival fallacy," and why so many Olympic gold medalists struggle after they win ➡️ Why life's most unwelcome changes usually look like gifts in hindsight ➡️ The three parts of happiness  ➡️ Why feelings are the evidence of happiness, not the thing itself ➡️ Why Arthur calls AI a "dark triad," and what that means if you're using it as a therapist ➡️ What to do when you're between things: take a walk  Arthur's argument is a freeing one. Happiness lives in the doing, so you can be fully alive right now. You don't have to arrive first. Record car sales, falling motor stocks: Motus, CMH, WeBuyCars and Zeda

South Africa sold 61,645 new cars in September, the most in almost 20 years, yet the listed motor stocks are falling. Simon Brown explains why: cheap, well-specced Chinese cars are driving the volume while crushing pricing power across new cars, used cars and rental fleets. He digs into the naamsa numbers, what flatters the headline, and why the market is pricing a cyclical peak, then ranks the six JSE motor stocks. Topics: US unemployment chart of the week, actively managed ETFs Power Hour, naamsa September sales, rental fleets and demos, Chinese brands, used car deflation, WeBuyCars, Zeda, Motus, CMH*, Super Group, Metair, hybrids and EVs. Are you chasing material success to fill an emotional void from your childhood? Adam Neumann speaks about the psychological lessons and spiritual frameworks that he learned after the most publicized corporate collapse in modern history.  Adam Neumann is the visionary entrepreneur who cofounded WeWork, growing it into a $47 billion global empire before stepping down amid unprecedented public scrutiny. He is now partnered with legendary venture firm a16z, and founder of Flow; an innovative residential real estate company designed to solve the modern loneliness epidemic by fostering genuine community.  In this episode, he explains: ■ The Ego Trap: How a massive $4.2 billion investment offer in the back of a taxi instantly derailed WeWork's mission, showing rapid financial success can blind founders to their core values. ■ The Foundation of Failure: Why experiencing a traumatic childhood or public business collapse is not a curse, but rather the exact mechanism required to build unbreakable psychological resilience. ■ The Technology Shabbat: Why disconnecting from all electronic devices for 24 hours every week is a necessary practice to break addiction, quiet noise, and discover yourself. ■ The True Measurement of Partners: Why you must evaluate your investors, friends, and life partners solely by how they treat you on your absolute worst day. ■ Influence vs. Control: The counterintuitive leadership principle that true power requires leading from the bottom up. Shawn Ryan: There's A Battle For Your Soul, It's Happening Right Now

What happens when the relentless pursuit of adrenaline leads to losing your soul in the process? Shawn Ryan reveals the hidden psychological toll of ambition, the dark side of psychedelics, and the ultimate price of true alignment. Shawn Ryan is a former U.S. Navy SEAL, CIA contractor, and the creator of The Shawn Ryan Show, one of the most influential and widely watched independent podcasts. After transitioning from elite military service and dangerous covert operations into media, he has built an expansive platform known for raw unfiltered conversations.  In this episode, he explains: ■ The Adrenaline Trap: How former elite operators often suffer from severe post-service depression because normal civilian life cannot replicate the neurological highs of combat. ■ The Psychedelic Nightmare: Why an intensive ibogaine treatment designed to optimize his mental state instead opened a terrifying portal to the spiritual realm and severe supernatural oppression. ■ The Cost of Alignment: Genuine personal transformation demands going through a shedding phase, in which you consciously step away from profitable ad deals, social networks, and short term incentives to stay true to your values. ■ The Illusion of the Herd: Authentic, lasting achievement relies entirely on nurturing a unique voice anchored in personal belief, while imitating results in creative paralysis. ■ The Ultimate Priority: Chasing ambition eventually demands sacrificing family time, demonstrating that no amount of business success can make up for absence in your children's lives. The Conversation Skills That Change Your Career

Vanessa Van Edwards has spent nearly twenty years studying what makes some people easy to talk to. Her argument is that conversation is a skill rather than a personality, and that most of us are simply out of practice. She joins Emma to talk about how to prepare for the conversations that matter, what to say when you meet someone who could change your career, and how to handle feedback and disagreement without damaging the relationship. She also explains what happened early in her own career, when she lost a television deal during the small talk before the pitch and nobody ever told her that was why. In this episode: How to prepare for conversations that could change what happens nextThe three questions you should always be ready to answerWhy talking about how busy you are makes people think you're less competentHow to raise a problem with someone more senior than youWhat the way someone tells their own story reveals about themVanessa Van Edwards's new book, Conversation: How to Connect with Anyone & Make Every Interaction Count, is out now.
