When Bad Things Happen to Good People

When historian Kate Bowler was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer, she became fascinated by the ways people try to impose order on events they can't control. She joins us to explore what it means to live fully when life offers no satisfying explanation for the tragedies we may face. Then, in the latest installment of "Your Questions Answered," psychologist Lisa Miller returns to answer listener questions about the relationship between science and spirituality.  In our companion conversation for subscribers to Hidden Brain Plus, we take a deep dive into the origins and surprising spread of the prosperity gospel that Kate has studied. If you're a subscriber, that episode is called “The Gospel of Success.” If you're not yet a subscriber, you can access a free seven-day trial at support.hiddenbrain.org or apple.co/hiddenbrain. The Silk Road Explained 🐪🏺 | The Ancient Route That Connected Civilizations | Boring History for Sleep

For thousands of years, merchants, travelers, diplomats, soldiers, and pilgrims crossed the vast network of routes we now call the Silk Road. Stretching across deserts, mountains, cities, and empires, these paths connected distant parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. This extra-long documentary explores how the Silk Road developed, who traveled along it, and what moved across its enormous network. Silk was only one part of the story. Alongside precious goods came religions, languages, technologies, artistic traditions, scientific knowledge, and ideas that transformed societies far beyond their places of origin. What made long-distance trade possible across some of the world's harshest landscapes? Which cities became wealthy from controlling the routes? And how did the constant movement of people and ideas reshape the civilizations connected by the Silk Road? Settle in for a long journey through ancient deserts, mountain passes, bustling markets, forgotten cities, and the interconnected world of the past. Boring History for Sleep — Soft stories about ancient civilizations, forgotten journeys, trade, and the people who connected the world.

Why Do We Turn on Innocent People?

Why do we turn on innocent people? A convincing story, a suspicious glance and suddenly everyone’s an armchair detective. But what happens when the crowd gets it completely wrong? Hannah Fry and Michael Stevens explore the psychology of false accusations, witch hunts and mob mentality, starting with Richard Jewell, the security guard hailed as a hero after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing before becoming the target of a media storm. From the Salem witch trials and the Satanic Panic to internet detectives and social media pile-ons, they investigate how a hunch snowballs into certainty. Along the way: confirmation bias, beliefs that refuse to budge, and the famous Asch conformity experiments that show how easily we join the crowd, even when the crowd is obviously wrong. Plus, Michael tackles accusations that Vsauce’s Mind Field was faked, Hannah shares her own brush with conspiracy theories, and they ask why we’re so convinced we can spot a liar when the evidence suggests we’re barely better than a coin toss. It’s a journey through outrage, misinformation and our very human enthusiasm for pointing the finger. Because once people think you’re guilty, even defending yourself can look suspicious. ------------------- For more information about Cancer Research UK, their research, breakthroughs and how you can support them, visit https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/our-research/rest-is-science Cancer Research UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1089464), Scotland (SC041666), the Isle of Man (1103) and Jersey (247). Narcolepsy: why you’ve been thinking about it all wrong

The sleep disorder has been the butt of jokes and a comedic plot point, but the reality of living with narcolepsy is anything but funny. Things could be about to change for people with the condition though, after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first ever drug to treat narcolepsy itself, rather than just its symptoms. Madeleine Finlay tells Ian Sample how the scientific breakthrough came about, and Julie Flygare, who has narcolepsy and founded the non-profit Project Sleep, explains what it is like to live with the condition and how the drug could be gamechanger.
