What Safeguarding Nukes Can Teach Us About Safeguarding A.I.

Last night, President Trump welcomed Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, in a lavish ceremony as he arrived for two days of closely watched negotiations. Artificial intelligence — and what, if any, role the countries should play in regulating it as concerns mount about its risks — is expected to be on the agenda. David E. Sanger, a White House correspondent for The New York Times, explains how nuclear nonproliferation could be a model for how to protect humanity from technological catastrophe. Guest: David E. Sanger, the White House and national security correspondent for The New York Times. The Global Story: Why the world wants American surrogates

The United States is one of the few wealthy countries where commercial surrogacy remains legal. Bans elsewhere in the world, combined with a largely free-market approach at home, have made the US an international destination for would-be parents from around the globe – fuelling the industry’s rapid expansion. But could it all come to an end? Today on The Global Story, we speak to fertility technology reporter Emi Nietfeld about how the US became a global hub for surrogacy – and why a series of high-profile cases is raising difficult questions about the industry.

Standoff at historical N Ireland flashpoint

In Northern Ireland, Roman Catholic protesters have blocked a road in the town of Portadown along which members of the pro-British Orange Order were planning to march. It's the first time they've been granted permission to go ahead with the march along the Garvaghy Road for nearly 30 years. But Roman Catholic residents oppose it and have refused police orders to disperse. The road was a major flashpoint of the conflict between largely Catholic, pro-Irish republicans and Protestant, pro-UK unionists in the late 1990s. Also in the programme: British police declare a major incident near an air base used by the US air force; and how trees shaped Russian history and people.
