  • An Argument

    28 Sept

    An Argument

Nikole Hannah-Jones made an argument 10 years ago in The New York Times Magazine that became famous. She wrote about choosing a public school for her daughter, Najya, in one of the most racially and economically segregated school systems in the country: New York City. Nikole chose a regular public school, one that most wealthy and middle-class parents wouldn’t consider, and she challenged other parents to do the same.  She revisits that argument, and that choice, in a series of conversations with producer Chana Joffe-Walt and with her daughter, Najya, who’s now 16 and has her own very different views.  Visit thisamericanlife.org/lifepartners to sign up for our premium subscription. (00:00:00) Prologue: Chana talks with Nikole about what they both remember from being young parents just starting to think about schools for their children. (9 minutes) (00:10:41) Act One: Nikole talks with Chana about Najya’s elementary school and the problems her family navigated there. (15 minutes) (00:25:57) Act Two: Chana talks with Najya about her memories of elementary and middle school and how she felt about her mom’s choices. (9 minutes) (00:31:40) Act Three: Nikole and Najya talk about what changed when Najya pushed back against her mom’s choices for elementary and middle school and got to choose her own high school. (10 minutes) (00:42:08) Act Four: Nikole and Najya talk with each other about the different choices they made and the questions they still have for each other. (9 minutes) (00:51:06) Act Five: Nikole fact-checks her memory against her old emails with Najya’s elementary school and has a painful revelation. (7 minutes) Transcripts are available at thisamericanlife.org / This American Life privacy policy. / Learn more about sponsor message choices.

    Adam Grant: Fix Your Vibe

Are you expecting too much from the wrong people? Organizational psychologist Adam Grant joins Trevor and Eugene to explore why making real friends can be so difficult, how power dynamics shape our relationships at work, and why even our closest connections can leave us disappointed. Adam breaks down the three kinds of relationships we all need and explains why confusing them can create unnecessary tension in our lives. It's a funny, thought-provoking conversation about friendship, expectations, and why building stronger relationships might start with understanding what we actually need from one another. The Oracle: The Woman Behind the Matrix - Sophia Stewart Tells Her Story

Anything Goes with James English. Ep 551The Oracle: The Woman Behind the Matrix. What if the world around us isn’t what it seems? What if the battle between good and evil, humanity and machines, freedom and control, has already begun? The Oracle is a thought-provoking podcast exploring the mind and story of Sophia Stewart, the woman who says her original work inspired The Matrix and The Terminator. But this podcast goes far beyond Hollywood controversy. Through deep conversations about life, consciousness, artificial intelligence, spirituality, technology, destiny, and the symbolic meaning behind the red pill and blue pill, The Oracle challenges listeners to question reality itself. Exploring the connection between man and machine, creator and creation, truth and illusion, Sophia Stewart shares her vision of how The Matrix was meant to be a philosophical continuation of Terminator, a warning about the future of AI, machines, and humanity’s struggle to survive both physically and spiritually. This is more than a podcast. It’s a journey into the code of human existence. Red pill or blue pill, the choice is yours. Stress is Affecting You More Than You Think

Send us Fan Mail What is stress doing to us? Are we all carrying trauma without even realising it? And in a world where we're more connected than ever, why do so many of us feel alone? This conversation is about the things we don't always say out loud, the experiences that shape us, and the importance of understanding ourselves and each other a little better. If you've ever felt overwhelmed, disconnected, or like you have to keep it all together, this conversation is for you. 🎙️ Welcome to NO NDA — where we have the conversations most people are afraid to have. My Abortion Guilt Made Me Feel Like a Bad Feminist

People keep telling me Grace Campbell reminds them of me, which I’m taking as a HUGE compliment! She’s a North London legend, I’m an East London legend, so it was about time we met. I had a feeling we’d have plenty to talk about… Grace has made a career out of saying the things people are too embarrassed to say out loud, so naturally we got straight into it! We talk about unusual childhoods, being a politician’s daughter without the perks, and why sometimes the best thing you can do is turn your phone off and disappear for a bit. She also opens up about her abortion, the guilt of letting go and her experience of being stalked. An honest conversation about shame, relationships and finding your voice, with plenty of laughter along the way. PLUS, we’ve booked a dog psychic! Anita reads both our dogs, and you’ll be shocked by what they have to say. The amazing Grace Campbell, some very outspoken pets and absolutely no chance of a quiet afternoon. Enjoy!!!! #GRACECAMPBELL #PALOMAFAITH #MADSADBAD This episode is part of Going Big for Boobs, a collaboration between Paloma Faith, JamPot Productions, Candy Kittens and breast cancer awareness charity CoppaFeel! • JACK THE RIPPER was Part of the Royal Family

JACK THE RIPPER was Part of the Royal Family

Anything Goes with James English Ep 564 Jack the Ripper unmasked I sit down with traveller Keith Dighton, who reveals his family’s disturbing and long-buried connection to the Jack the Ripper murders. Keith claims that information passed down through generations points not only to the true identity of Jack the Ripper but to a far darker and more sinister link to the British Royal Family than has ever been officially acknowledged. He takes us deep into the shadows of his family history, into the blood-soaked streets of Whitechapel, and into the fragments of evidence he believes were deliberately ignored, buried, or erased for over a century. We examine names, dates, and events tied to his claims, with key details independently fact-checked where possible. Was Jack the Ripper protected by power? Was his identity known and concealed at the highest levels? And could Keith’s family story expose a hidden truth behind one of the most brutal and terrifying unsolved murder cases in British history? This is Keith Dighton’s account, his evidence, and his theory one that drags the past back into the light and forces us to question everything we thought we knew. Watch the full conversation and decide for yourself. You can contact James on his social media platforms. http://instagram.com/jamesenglish2   https://x.com/jamesenglish0   https://www.facebook.com/share/1GHEKrNZV1/?mibextid=wwXIfr   https://www.tiktok.com/@jamesenglishpodcast?_t=ZN-8z0ZI6MBb9C&_r=1
