Dr Emily - The Phenomenon That Is Imposter Syndrome

Do you live in fear of being found out as a fraud? That despite your years of competency, achievement and high performance someone will uncover the truth? Well, you’re in the right place. Our resident psychologist Dr Emily Musgrove is here to tell you that your imposter syndrome is nothing to be afraid of. In fact, it’s not even a syndrome. 💌 Get practical take-aways from this episode, and join 9,400+ others in our newsletter community - https://www.theimperfects.com.au/sign-up-to-our-newsletter/ To get a little bit meta, Dr Emily explains that knowing that you don’t know everything, is a good thing. Especially if you’re starting a new role, or trying something for the first time. HOWEVER, the long-term consequences of the imposter cycle such as perfectionism, overcompensation, burnout, or even avoidance and procrastination, may impact your willingness to say yes to new opportunities, such as going for that promotion or asking for support. In this episode, Dr Emily asks Hugh, Ryan and Josh to think about the balance of their competence and confidence, and provides them (and you!) with four practical strategies for combatting this pesky phenomenon. And then, a weird amount of chat about Vlad the Impaler. 0:00 – An Emisode!2:41 – Adam Grant is not an imposter5:11 – Origins of Imposter Syndrome6:45 – ‘Syndrome’ is the wrong word8:19 – It all comes back to belonging10:39 – How common is imposter syndrome?12:20 – Fear of being found out as a fraud15:16 – The evolutionary psychology of belonging and self-doubt16:35 – Is self-doubt actually healthy?17:42 – Is your confidence a mask?18:57 – The Dunning-Kruger Effect23:15 – The more you know ….25:12 – Competence vs confidence26:29 – The Imposter Cycle: anxiety, perfectionism, luck32:09 – Becoming your own favourite artist35:55 – Avoidance, procrastination + self-fulfilling prophecies38:29 – Long term consequences ft. • Protect Your Brain, Extend Your Life: 7 Mistakes to Avoid for Better Cognitive Health with Dr Tommy Wood #681

Protect Your Brain, Extend Your Life: 7 Mistakes to Avoid for Better Cognitive Health with Dr Tommy Wood #681

Why would you want to live longer, if not to spend more time with the people you love? That question sits at the heart of this conversation with brain health expert Dr Tommy Wood. And today, we tackle the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to protecting their brain and longevity. Tommy is Assistant Professor of Paediatrics and Neuroscience at the University of Washington, where his research spans brain development, cognitive decline and dementia prevention. He’s also worked with elite athletes and Formula One drivers as a performance coach. And in his must-read book The Stimulated Mind, he combines that breadth and specialism to make understanding brain health easier – and more fun – than you might think. We start with mindset, and the surprising research findings that how you feel about ageing can shape how you go on to age. As someone in his 40s, I was delighted to hear Tommy cite a paper called Humans Peak in Midlife, showing that increasing wisdom, emotional intelligence and moral reasoning could make age 55 to 65 my best brain decade yet! We talk about the risk of becoming so focused on optimising your own health that you neglect what matters most, your relationships with other people. And Tommy points out why chasing longevity without that connection is missing the entire point. From there we get practical. We discuss mistakes like ignoring your blood pressure (and the implications for dementia) and what testing markers like homocysteine early, rather than waiting until something goes wrong, means for your long-term brain health. I also ask Tommy which supplements are worth considering, including the latest evidence on creatine and basic multivitamins. And he reveals the surprisingly strong link between your oral health and your brain. Finally, we consider the toxic load of modern life, from microplastics to air pollution, and whether you should filter your water. Tommy’s balanced, evidence-based perspective avoids scaremongering while still taking these issues seriously. Whether you’ve listened to every one of Tommy's previous appearances or you’re new to the podcast, this conversation is packed with practical ideas you can act on today, whatever your stage of life. As Tommy reminds us, it is never too late to start. The “It Girl” Trainer: How Kirsty Godso Gets Hollywood’s Hottest Bodies in Shape

Kirsty Godso is a world-renowned trainer and fitness entrepreneur known for training some of the most recognizable women in Hollywood and for her signature approach to strength, conditioning and performance. In this episode, Kirsty gets incredibly candid about what it actually takes to build a lean, sculpted body—and what the celebrity women she trains are asking for right now. We talk about the shift away from punishing workouts, how to get the coveted “baby T” arms, the exact move she loves for chiseled arms, her favorite exercise for building a great butt, and how to know when you’re doing too much. She explains how she customizes training and recovery, why myofascial work matters, how she “microdoses” HIIT, and her hack for avoiding that puffy, inflamed feeling after a workout. We also get into the side of celebrity fitness people rarely talk about: the intense pressure women are under to look a certain way, how she prepares clients for weddings and photoshoots, and the difference between getting results and actually maintaining them. Plus, Kirsty shares her own routines and body hacks, the exercise she’ll never do again, and exactly how she’d spend three months getting into her hottest shape.
