The Australian sharemarket fell by 0.21%, losing ground for the first time this week on another big day for earnings. A key jobs report showed that close to 41,000 jobs were lost in July, raising the possibility of a smaller rate hike in September by the RBA.

Morning Report 18 Aug 22: US sharemarkets were lower on Wednesday
US sharemarkets were lower on Wednesday as investors digested the minutes of the last Federal Reserve meeting. Shares in Target fell 2.7%, in response to weak sales results. The Dow Jones index closed lower by 172 points or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index fell by 0.7%. And the Nasdaq index fell by 164 points or 1.3%.

Market Close 17 Aug 22: ASX 200 extends winning streak to a third day
The Australian sharemarket rose for a third day, with the ASX 200 lifting by 0.31%. CBA fell after trading ex-dividend, while CSL Limited, Redbubble, Downer EDI, Domain, Magellan and Santos fell after handing down profit results.

CSL’s Full Year Result 17 Aug 22: Plasma collection headwinds continue
Australia’s third largest company CSL Limited (CSL) posted a modest lift in full year revenue, higher costs and softer net profit. While plasma collections rose, it was done at a higher cost, flu vaccine sales improved and a near US$12b acquisition has muddied its outlook.

Morning Report 17 Aug 22: US sharemarkets were mixed on Tuesday
US sharemarkets were mixed on Tuesday. Shares of Walmart climbed 5.1% after the retailer forecast a smaller drop in full-year profit than previously projected. Home improvement retailer Home Depot surpassed estimates for quarterly sales with its share price up 4.1%. But rising US government bond yields weighed on high-growth technology shares. The Dow Jones index closed higher for a fifth day, up by 240 points or 0.7%. The S&P 500 index rose by 0.2%. But the Nasdaq index dipped by 25.5 points or 0.2%.

Market Close 16 Aug 22: ASX 200 hits near 10-week high
The Australian sharemarket rose by 0.58% on Tuesday, briefly hitting a 10-week high in the process. While just 83 stocks on the ASX 200 rose, BHP Group surged by 4% after handing down its second largest full year underlying profit on record thanks partly to surging coal prices.
