686: How VC Shapes Startups with Benjamin Shestakofsky (Strategy Skills classics)

For this episode, let's revisit a strategy skills classic featuring an interview with the author of Behind the Startup: How Venture Capital Shapes Work, Innovation, and Inequality, Benjamin Shestakofsky. This book draws on nineteen months of participant-observation research inside a successful Silicon Valley startup, and examines how the company was organized to meet the needs of the venture capital investors who funded it. Investors push startups to scale as quickly as possible to inflate the value of their asset. Benjamin Shestakofsky shows how these demands create organizational problems that managers solve by combining high-tech systems with low-wage human labor. Behind the Startup explains how the gains generated by these companies are funneled into the pockets of a small cadre of elite investors and entrepreneurs. Shestakofsky compellingly argues that we must focus less on fixing the technology and more on changing the financial infrastructure that supports it. Benjamin Shestakofsky is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is affiliated with AI at Wharton and the Center on Digital Culture and Society. He is the author of Behind the Startup: How Venture Capital Shapes Work, Innovation, and Inequality (on sale March 19, 2024, University of California Press). Shestakofsky's research centers on the relationship between work, technology, organizations, and political economy in the age of AI. Articles based on his research for Behind the Startup have been awarded the 2021 Star-Nelkin Paper Award from the American Sociological Association's (ASA) Section on Science, Knowledge, and Technology and the 2019 W. Richard Scott Article Award from the ASA's Section on Organizations, Occupations, and Work. His research has been supported by the Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy and the UC Berkeley Institute for Research on Labor and Employment. His work has been featured in the Financial Times, Axios, and in a publication of the World Economic Forum.   Author website: https://www.benjaminshestakofsky.com/ Book website: Behind the Startup: https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520395039/behind-the-startup X/Twitter: @bshestakofsky   Here are some free gifts for you: Overall Approach Used in Well-Managed Strategy Studies free download: www.firmsconsulting.com/OverallApproach McKinsey & BCG winning resume free download: www.firmsconsulting.com/resumepdf Enjoying this episode? Revisited: Your Instincts Know What You Want with Happiness Expert Arthur Brooks

Team Simon here! A Bit of Optimism is on a short break, and brand-new episodes return October 27. Until then, we're revisiting a few conversations we keep coming back to. This week it's Arthur Brooks, a longtime friend of Simon's and one of his favorite people to talk to. Have you ever felt like you're falling behind? Everyone else seems to have a plan, a timeline and the next rung on the ladder lined up. Any detour, like a gap year, a pivot or a job that isn't quite right, feels like losing ground. Arthur Brooks thinks you're running the wrong race. Chasing a finish line is one of the surest ways to end up unhappy. He argues that happiness lives in the process, not the outcome. Arthur is a bestselling author and teaches one of the most popular classes at Harvard Business School: a whole course on happiness. He lives what he teaches, too. He played French horn professionally from 19 to 31 and then reinvented himself as a behavioral scientist. After that, he became president of a Washington think tank without ever having raised a dollar. When he left that job with no idea what came next, he walked the Camino de Santiago to find out. In this conversation, Arthur explains how to know when to trust your gut, why reinvention starts with curiosity rather than skills, and why meaning has collapsed for people under 35. Simon pushes on something that worries him: if AI takes away the struggle, what happens to the wisdom that struggle builds? In this episode you'll learn: ➡️ The 80/20/0 rule for knowing a big decision is the right one ➡️ Why reapplying your skills isn't the same as reinventing yourself ➡️ Why your career is a spiral, not a staircase ➡️ The "arrival fallacy," and why so many Olympic gold medalists struggle after they win ➡️ Why life's most unwelcome changes usually look like gifts in hindsight ➡️ The three parts of happiness  ➡️ Why feelings are the evidence of happiness, not the thing itself ➡️ Why Arthur calls AI a "dark triad," and what that means if you're using it as a therapist ➡️ What to do when you're between things: take a walk  Arthur's argument is a freeing one. Happiness lives in the doing, so you can be fully alive right now. You don't have to arrive first. The group examines the Coldcard vulnerability, the growing capabilities of open-weight models, and the resulting shift in the balance between attackers and defenders. They discuss AI-powered code auditing, self-custody and hardware wallet risks, the importance of domain expertise, and how teams can build continuous security systems around their software. The conversation also explores quantum computing threats, Bitcoin’s resilience, and why AI could ultimately strengthen software security. Guests on this month’s Bitcoin Brainstorm include: Cathie Wood: Founder, CEO and CIO, ARK Invest Lorenzo Valente: Director of Research, Digital Assets, ARK InvestRod Roudi: Founder, Bitcoin ParkRob Hamilton: Co-Founder And CEO, AnchorWatchDhruv Bansal: Co-Founder And CSO, UnchainedSeth For Privacy: COO, Cake Wallet And Radar Key Points From This Episode: How falling inference costs, rapid model advancement, and open-weight models have unlocked a new level of capability in software vulnerability research. The Coldcard weak-entropy vulnerability, and why we believe it represented a software and vendor problem rather than a failure of the Bitcoin protocol. The trade-offs between self-custody, third-party custodians, ETFs, hardware wallets, and multi-vendor multisig—and why security demands ongoing vigilance rather than a "set it and forget it" approach. Why we expect AI to benefit defenders more than attackers, from continuous repository scanning and faster audits to preparing Bitcoin for potential quantum computing threats. Elon Musk, Sam Altman, And Dario Amodei All Agree… | The Brainstorm 149

In this episode of The Brainstorm, Sam, Nick, and Brett dig into Dario Amodei’s open letter calling on frontier labs to pace themselves, a position Elon Musk and Sam Altman both signaled agreement with. Brett argues the real risk is not extinction but agentic swarms mangling digital infrastructure that was never hardened for them, and that slowing the public frontier may hand closed labs both a wider lead and a defense business to sell. Nick pushes back on the competitive motives behind a federal AI regulator. Then Nick reports back from six days inside Meta’s Muse, the agentic consumer app that found him over $1,000 in unclaimed money sitting in Michigan. Key Points From This Episode: Why frontier labs want to pace the public frontier, and what that does to 99.99% cost declinesWhether an AI regulatory regime protects the public or locks in the incumbentsHow Meta’s Muse is built for the consumer, not the prosumer, and why commerce take rates beat subscriptions If you know ARK, you know we focus on long-term innovation.
