    Marcel Lewandowsky: DIE GLOBALE RECHTE

Der Autor strukturiert komplexe Zusammenhänge übersichtlich und bietet damit eine wertvolle Grundlage, um rechte Bewegungen – national wie international – einzuordnen.“ Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Laura Gabler Alles, was rechts ist: „Was Populisten wollen“ hat Marcel Lewandowsky in seinem schon „klassischen“ Buch aus dem Jahr 2024 genau kartographiert. Die Sprache und die propagandistischen Kniffe der Ultrarechten, die sich heute nicht mehr als Fürsprecher des Autoritären geben, sondern als Stimme des Volkes und Prediger einer unbestimmten Art „echter Demokratie“. Nun analysiert der Forscher die „globale Rechte“, was sie eint, was sie trennt, wie sich die heterogenen Verkörperungen von Ressentiment und Groll unterscheiden. Parteien und Bewegungen der radikalen und extremen Rechten sind auf Erfolgskurs. Sie gewinnen Wahlen bilden Regierungen und beeinflussen öffentliche Debatten. Rechtspopulistische Parteien, die vordergründig die Demokratie bejahen, ebnen Themen und Akteuren der äußersten Rechten den Weg in Institutionen und Diskurse. Dort, wo sie an der Macht sind, werden die Demokratie und der Rechtsstaat in Mitleidenschaft gezogen. Der Politikwissenschaftler Marcel Lewandowsky zeichnet die Geschichte der Rechten nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg nach, erläutert die Ursachen für ihre neuerlichen Erfolge und erörtert ihre Auswirkungen auf die Demokratie.     Thea Riofrancos & Simela Papatheophilou: EXTRACTION. THE FRONTIERS OF GREEN CAPITALISM

    EXTRACTION. The Frontiers of Green Capitalism Will green technologies and renewable energy save us from climate change? While public policies focus increasingly on a “clean” energy transition, the discussion shies away from the vexing dilemmas of raw materials supply chains. Minerals such as coltan, lithium and others are necessary to produce the technology needed for an energy transition, from batteries to windmills. However, their extraction often has serious environmental and social consequences. In her book “Extraction: the Frontiers of Green Capitalism”, Thea Riofrancos explores the production of lithium, a critical resource for renewable energy storage, electric transportation and many other uses. Its mining is responsible for water depletion, chemical pollution, habitat and biodiversity loss. In production countries, environmental and Indigenous movements contest the rapid expansion of extraction, defending ecosystems, livelihoods and waterways already under pressure from global warming. Thea Riofrancos’ book tells the story of how a critical mineral became the focus of a worldwide battle over the future of green energy and, by extension, capitalism. This battle has become part of geopolitics as growing energy requirements linked to transport, digitalisation, and recently AI and military technologies have unleashed an ever-increasing rush for the extraction of minerals. Oktober, der Angriff Israels auf den Iran – das sind nur einige, wenn auch entscheidende Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre, die zeigen, wie die »alte« internationale Ordnung erodiert und das Völkerrecht und die Menschenrechte zunehmend missachtet werden. In dieser viel beschworenen Zeitenwende stellt sich die fundamentale Frage, ob das internationale Recht stark genug ist diesem Sturm zu widerstehen, oder in Zukunft einfach das Recht des Stärkeren gilt.Wolfgang Kaleck, einer der international renommiertesten Menschenrechtsanwälte, argumentiert in dieser Streitschrift, dass Völkerrecht und Menschenrechte nicht zur Disposition stehen dürfen, gerade weil sie im Kern, trotz aller Ambivalenzen, Erschütterungen und Rückschläge, einen immensen Fortschritt auf dem Weg zu einer gerechteren Welt darstellen. Er erinnert nicht nur daran, dass der Traum »vom ewigen Frieden« aus dem Trauma des Krieges geboren wurde, sondern zeigt, wie notwendig es gerade jetzt ist, an diesem »utopischen Projekt« festzuhalten, welche Reformen des internationalen Rechts und seiner Institutionen es stärken könnten und wie und mit wem wir gemeinsam dafür streiten können. Wolfgang Kaleck gründete 2007 die Menschenrechtsorganisation European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) in Berlin und ist seitdem deren Generalsekretär. Er ist Autor mehrerer Bücher u. a. von »Die konkrete Utopie der Menschenrechte« (2021) und »Law versus Power« (2018). Er wurde u.a. mit dem Hermann Kesten-Preis des PEN-Zentrums Deutschland und dem Max Friedländer-Preis des Bayrischen Anwaltsverband ausgezeichnet und arbeitet in zahlreichen Projekten mit der Akademie der Künste in Berlin, dem Haus der Kulturen der Welt, der Magnum Foundation, der Galerie Autograph und anderen Kulturinstitutionen zusammen. Gleiches gilt für Deutschland: Lange favorisierten junge Menschen vor allem Grüne und Liberale, aber schon bei der Europawahl stimmte die Gen Z massiv für Rechtsaußen; bei der Bundestagswahl 2025 war die in Teilen rechtsextreme AfD im Osten bei Jungwählern bereits stärkste Kraft. Rechtspopulisten und Rechtsextremisten haben es also geschafft, sich als Protestpartei und als Problemlöser anzubieten - und anzubiedern. Rechte Alltags- und Subkultur ist für Jugendliche wieder attraktiv, in den sozialen Medien punkten die Radikalen mit ihren gekonnt auf Jugendliche zugeschnittenen Angeboten. Nationalistische, anti-woke Politik trendet also bei der Gen Z. Warum – und wie damit umgehen? Darüber spricht Robert Misik mit Rafid Kabir, Content Creator und „Demokratie-Influencer“, und Antonie Rietzschel, Investigativ-Journalistin und Rechtsextremismus-Expertin in Ostdeutschland.     STATES OF SOLIDARITY HOW TO BUILD A SOCIETY Solidarity is essential for addressing the defining challenges of our time. While many societies engage in debates about justice and fair institutions, they have often failed to create the conditions for social and planetary flourishing. A key reason is the neglect of solidarity: the horizontal ties that bind people together beyond kinship, love, or friendship. Without this ‘social glue’, societies struggle with declining trust, eroded democratic legitimacy, and increasing social and political fragmentation. The book explores the concept of solidarity and its entanglement with justice, trust, and care. It then examines three major societal challenges—climate change, the loss of democratic control in economic governance, and the rise of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructures—through the lens of solidarity. Rather than offering merely new policy tools, this perspective reshapes the questions we ask and opens up new possibilities for action. Concluding with a vision for the ‘good state’ in the twenty-first century, the book makes a compelling case that solidarity is not a nostalgic ideal but a vital, generative force for democratic resilience and social cohesion in an age of uncertainty. Barbara Prainsack is a professor of comparative policy analysis at the University of Vienna, where she heads the Contemporary Solidarity Studies research group and serves as co-director of the Vienna Centre for Advanced Studies (ViCAS); she is a Fellow of the British Royal Society of Arts, an elected foreign member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, an elected member of the Academia Europaea (AE), an elected member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatec), and a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences Donna Andrews is Senior Researcher for the Global Health Solidarity Index Project at the EthicsLab, Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town (UCT). Und wir brauchen sie gerade jetzt, wo negative Nachrichten und Resignation alles zu dominieren scheinen. Dieses Buch hat einen erfrischenden Ansatz: Es plädiert dafür, aktiv zu werden, die Gleichgültigkeit abzulegen, »Nein!« zu sagen, anzuecken – im Job, auf der Straße und in der Politik. Die Autoren finden dafür viele prominente Beispiele von Menschen, die unbequem sind, aufbegehren und ihre Finger absichtlich in Wunden legen wie Petra Kelly, Kevin Kühnert, Werner Schulz, Marco Wanderwitz, Kristina Hänel, Anne Wizorek, Marie von Kuck, Heidi Reichinnek u. v. a. »Quertreiber« haben bei uns keinen guten Ruf. Überall wird Anpassung verlangt. Die Autoren drehen den Spieß um. Sie zeigen anhand konkreter Fälle, warum es gefährlich ist, wenn niemand mehr den Mut hat, »Nein!« zu sagen, und wie konstruktiver Ungehorsam geht. Sie rufen dazu auf, die Renitenz nicht den Rechten zu überlassen. Widerstand ja, aber fröhlich, nicht verbittert, fair, nicht fies! Eine Mischung aus Ratgeber, politischem Sachbuch und Streitschrift – mit Inspirationen für alle, die unzufrieden sind mit den aktuellen Zuständen und die glauben, dass wir es besser können. Matthias Meisner, geb. 1961, ist freier Journalist und Buchautor. Er schreibt unter anderem für die taz, die Blätter für deutsche und internationale Politik, den Volksverpetzer und das Katapult-Magazin. Seine Themen: Menschenrechte, Demokratie, Rechtsextremismus, Feminismus. Er lebt in Berlin und Tirana. Monika Mokre ist Politikwissenschaftlerin und arbeitet seit 1991 an der Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien. Ihre Expertisen umfassen ua.     Thant Myint-U: HOW PEACE WAS MADE IN THE 1960’S – AN INSPIRATION FOR NOW?

    There are good and bad news when it comes to peacemaking. Bad news first: In today’s world, we see more conflicts and wars than ever. At this moment of time, “peacemaking” looks like “deal-making”. And, by the way, ego-driven autocratic leaders and their entourage even financially profit from the deadly power games they have inflicted on others. The environment and conditions for trust and real dialogue, fact-based media, respect for international law and multilateral organizations seem to be worse than ever. The good news, however, is: Peacemaking has always been difficult, already in the 1960s – nevertheless, several UN peacemaking, mandate enforcement and peacekeeping missions have been successful. New concepts and methods around involving protest and civil rights movements, and – since 2010 – a focus on Women, Peace and Security have become part of contemporary diplomacy. But: Today’s conflicts are pressing and have the potential to lead us to the brink of self-extermination – due to disinformation, technology and weapons of mass destruction, but most importantly due to unqualified and populist political leadership.  What can inspire us from the 1960s when the United Nations became really global, with so many newly independent states in Africa and Asia, and an organization vetted with hope, competence and good leadership, with capacity and vision for a better and more peaceful world? Historian Thant Myint-U, the grandson of the third UN Secretary General U Thant – the first one from the Global South – will present and discuss his latest book “Peacemaker: U Thant, the United Nations, and the Untold History of the 1960s” and what this never-before-told story reveals about global politics and the prospects for future peace.  Based in part on recently declassified papers, the book tells the story of a schoolteacher in a remote Burmese town who, within a little more than a decade, finds himself at the very center of global politics, as the UN’s Secretary-General, mediating the Cuban Missile Crisis between Kennedy, Khrushchev and Castro, and then going on to confront one war after another through the turbulent 1960s, from Vietnam to the Congo and the Middle East. The story is the missing piece in the puzzle of how our world came to be and shines a fresh light on our real options today. Moderator Ulrike Lunacek together with Thant Myint-U will discuss what can inspire us from then and what real options we have or might have today. How to imagine a world where trust in functioning international organizations and multilateral rules-based United Nations can again become vibrant, including in the implementation of the necessary changes that have been postponed for too long.   Thant Myint-U is an award-winning writer, historian, conservationist, and a former international public servant. He has served on three United Nations peacekeeping operations as well many years with the UN in New York as chief of policy planning. For over a decade, he helped lead reform efforts in Burma (Myanmar), including as a peace mediator. He is the founding chair of Yangon Heritage Trust. The author of five books, he is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, UK. Ulrike Lunacek, currently Special Envoy for Austria’s candidature for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council, has had a long career in Austrian and European politics: between 1995 and 2020 she was i.a. Member of the Austrian Parliament, Member and Vicepresident of the European Parliament, and in 2020 briefly part of the ÖVP/Grüne government as Secretary of State for Arts and Culture. An active member of development/North-South as well as feminist and LGBTIQ activities/NGOs before and after her time in party politics, she has written and edited four books and lives in Vienna as moderator, speaker and author.
