Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding dig into our tasty one-tin butter chicken & chickpea curry

It’s double trouble at the table this week. Alison Hammond returns, and Noel Fielding makes his debut as we celebrate the comeback of The Great British Bake Off to our screens. Back for its 17th series and with a new judge in the tent, Nigella Lawson, they share what life is really like behind the scenes, from the joys of working on set to tales of Alison’s on‑set baking and Noel’s go‑to lunch for keeping energy levels high. Angela’s latest creation puts her in strong contention for our own Star Baker, as she serves up Ed Smith’s recipe for a one-tin butter chicken and chickpea curry. Quickly earning its new name of ‘Alison & Noel in a bowl’, it’s served with poppadoms, chutneys and a bottle of Cape Mentelle Marri Chardonnay 2025, selected by the Waitrose wine experts. It’s no surprise that there’s no shortage of laughter in the studio, with the table getting stuck into some important food debates, including why fish finger sandwiches should always be sourdough-free, and Alison’s recent discovery that fish and chips are even better with a side of golden syrup, a combination that leaves the Dish table divided. We end with a trip down memory lane in a Butterscotch Angel Delight whisking final, but will Alison and Noel have done enough to impress our judges and take home the Waitrose goodie bag? Joel Meyerowitz

American photographer Joel Meyerowitz talks to John Wilson about his cultural influences and formative experiences. A pioneer of the artform, he first began capturing life on the streets of his native New York in the early 1960s, and helped to establish colour photography as a fine-art medium. After travelling throughout Europe he made his name with a groundbreaking show at the Museum of Modern Art in 1968. Following the attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001, Joel Meyerowitz became the only photographer to secure access to Ground Zero and, over several months, captured the scenes of devastation. His work has been the subject of more than 350 exhibitions in museums and galleries around the world, and he is the recipient of many awards, most recently the prestigious Outstanding Contribution prize at the Sony World Photography Awards 2026. Cezanne in Paris, Taryn Simon in New York, Magritte in London

At the Grand Palais in Paris a new exhibition explores Paul Cezanne’s influence on artists from his own time to now. In Paris, Ben Luke speaks to Xavier Rey, the director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou, who is one of four curators of the exhibition, Cezanne and Us. In New York, the Guggenheim has just opened Taryn Simon’s latest project, called Father Country I Do Love You. It is the first solo exhibition by an artist whose principal medium is photography to be staged in the museum’s celebrated rotunda and, remarkably, the largest display of new work ever staged at the Guggenheim. The Art Newspaper’s editor-in-chief, Ben Sutton, speaks to Taryn Simon about the show. And this episode’s Work of the Week is René Magritte’s Le Plaisir (Pleasure) (1946), a gouache on paper which is part of an exhibition at Gagosian in London called This Is Still Not a Pipe: The Afterlife of Magritte.
